I just recently got my HD DVD addon for the 360 and I must say HD DVD ftw.

So far the only titles I have are King Kong, Full Metal Jacket, Superman Returns and Goodfellas.

Hopefully HD DVD wins the format war.

I'm gonna buy the add-on for the 360 as well. The Video Sleazy I'm at is getting the back catalogue of Blu-Ray and HDDVD stuff so it will finally be worth the upgrade.

don't you guys get annoyed by the noisy fan in the 360 when you're watching movies? mine is really loud

I watch all movies thru my PC and also I've never noticed the noise from the 360 while playing games.

yeah, my 360 doesn't make much noise at all. it is what i use for a dvd player atm.

mine was sent back to get fixed under warranty

I'm probably going to buy the HD-DVD add-on for my 360. It's only like $200, so it's not really that big of a commitment. Even if HD-DVD ends up going the way of the dodo, there's still plenty of movies on it at the moment, and plenty more on the way.

VGA cable on a 38" LCD @ 720p. Sif composite I would at least be using component if not VGA.

I don't get it, surely FMJ and Goodfellas weren't filmed in HD? Or can they remaster film so that they get equivalent resolutions?

They were filmed on 32mm film. 32mm film is far better quality than 1080p HD so they actually have downgrade it a bit to fit it on the DVD.

(remember these films were originally shown at the cinema which needs a crazy high res to look good)

they were probally made on film which they then digitise at HD quality to make the HD versions.

yeah, i meant component. that is what i use as the vga port on my LCD is connected to my media centre pc.

ah ok, so when they say "filmed in HD" these days, they're not implying that they're better than how people have been doing it for 30 years, they're just saying they're filming in the HD spec presumably direct to digital. So its probably a downgrade if they're saying it talking about films!

To be honest I haven't really seen "filmed in HD" around too much. I have seen "broadcast in HD" and s*** around quite a bit though.

i think there have been a few movies that have been made purely in digital format.

Star Wars Episode 2/3 for example.

Film vs Digital is a lot like Records vs CDs in a way.

With film you get the grainyness and the marks on the source material, just as you get all the pocks etc on an old record, whereas a digital film will be pristine, yet not as natural looking as film. As an untouched record is pure analog it really would have better audio quality than a CD (more true to the source recording anyway), it's just limited in ranges and has the aforementioned artifacts.

im going 64bit vista soon, so ill prolly get a blu ray drive then (hopefully sub £100). i just run a vista pc for all my tv.

i found the vista version of MCE really clunky. i guess i was only running it on a P4 3Ghz with 1GB of RAM but still, it is only MCE.

you mean how they're now selling in the US for $198, just in time for the christmas rush :) walmart even has some stupid limited sale where they are at $99. so they'll be cheap over here soon

I have some old movies in HD e.g Predator and the resolution is great but you can really see the imperfections in 80s filming. Like lots of grain and scratches as it plays through. I don't like it but new movies are just awesome.

HD DVD/Bluray - who is using?

I was thinking of getting HD DVD. I won't be touching Blu-Ray, don't even want to know about it. Hopefully HD DVD wins out because I've got a 360, but I suppose either way MS could just release a BR player if they want. I think I'll wait a while though...so pricey for even mediocre really old titles atm.

Here in the US mate, crazy sales with the major retailers, like Wal-Mart and Best Buy. They were selling entry-level HD-DVD players for $99!

I bought the HD DVD add-on for the Xbox from a guy at work for $165 and f*** it's good. Watched Transformers a couple of days back and holy s*** it looked amazing.

Just watching Chronicles Of Riddick atm and damn it's good. Not only is it an awesome movie but it looks great in hi-def. Gonna watch Total Recall tomorrow, something else I haven't seen in ages. Should be awesome as well.

Definately recommend a player although I prolly wouldn't spend more than a few hundred bucks on one, twas just lucky I got mine for a bargain basement price.

I dunno, I reckon blu-ray will win. I mean there's already blu-ray burners for computers which will make the juarez monkeys happy so they'll all go out and buy them (although discs are f***off expensive). I guess you could use them for "legal backups" but there's cheaper ways of doing that. Where are the HD DVD burners?

Plus blu-ray drives are in the ps3 as well which means you could probably use them for games as well as movies on both the ps3 and windows at some stage.

A very small number of laptops have HD-DVD drives. Can't tell whether it's just read or write.

When I meant buy one, should have said buy a HD DVD or Blu Ray one. The quality is great. And as for burners, the discs are far too expensive. I think if I get one it wont be for ages until they are less than $200 and the discs are cheaper. I don't like the thought of spending more than $2 per blank.

the hd drive is actually in a pretty high number of laptops now. toshiba, samsung, HP and so on all have models with them in.

The 360 HD-DVD drive can be used as an external drive on any computer, even Macs. I haven't read all of the responses, so if anyone else has already said that, then f*** you.
