Walked inside to find s*** everywhere.. 42" Plasma and 42" LCD TV gone, computer gone (they took the 5 year old laptop with a broken screen yet left the new one and my uber rig), and pretty much anything of value that was in anyones room.

Anyone got any tips to "maximize" insurance?

I got robbed this time last year while I was living in redfern

maximise insurance = find every receipt you can, empty xbox360 & ps3 boxes also help
make sure you call the cops, file the police report first thing
insurance will likely ask to see records of your mobile home phone bill

make sure you can explain every call made a few days before, during and after the robbery
if you had any serial numbers/etc written on stuff (highly advisable, if you didn't before you should do it now), have them ready

oh and for f*** sake, hide your stash before the cops get to your house ..
any cash that was stolen has a $200 limit usually, my safe was stolen with 500 or so in and they'd only give me $200 of it back (suncorp metway home & contents)

I had been paying month to month, organised insurance about 6 weeks before I got robbed and managed to get $15k back in goods/cash
canceled the policy a month after i got the payout, paid maybe $200 for it

insurance rocks when it works

Hey teq, what was the turn around on your insurance?

Also, what happens with stuff like this: my ipod was taken but it was old (3rd gen, going on 3-4 years old).

most insurers will just replace your gear with new

jewlery is a bit trickier

spooks protip for dealing with insurance assessors:
"dont tell them all your mates gear that got stolen was yours"

they replace with new generally
just don't mention it was old, quite simply

about 3 weeks before I got robbed I had bought

1 x new projector
1 x new pioneer receiver
1 x display stock of $2500 speakers
etc etc

all of it was replaced with *brand*new* stuff, lucky for me I got the next model up receiver and brand spanking new speakers which was cool, cause the RRP was $2.5k but I only paid $1100 for the last of the floor stock in the colour I didn't really want
they gave me the colour I wanted when I got them replaced

also had my decks stolen (obligatory for sale pimp">), they were sl100's and they replaced them with brand spanking new sl1210mk5's - $500 or so extra value, not to mention I had $300 stylus on them so they gave me new stylus etc too

turn around sucked, probably because it looked way suspicious (all the new stuff, recent insurance policy etc) - took close to 6 months

My car was broken into a couple of years ago and all my ex-girlfriends s*** got stolen out of it (haha nothing of mine was taken). It was literally the worst possible night for us to say, "Don't bother going to the car to get out your bag with everything in it - we're leaving early."

Anyhoo the point: she had an old camera, old phone and a whole bunch of other old s***. She showed receipts/boxes for stuff like the camera, and they paid the cash value on the receipts which was about $700 for a 4 megapixel camera lols. They paid back what everything was bought for, not what it was worth at the time.

Having said that, I've heard of people only getting replacement value on items.

took pics right after I got my whole theater setup going so they pretty much made a shopping list from that

Well I was the the last person to leave this morning at 8:20am and the first one back at about 5:30pm. The house was defs locked up properly when i left.

When i got home, the back doors were wide open and the key had gone missing. I think how they got in was a glass door at another part of the house, its sort of a grid of glass panels like:

----------------------
| | | |
| | | |
|---------------------
| | | |
| | | |
|---------------------
| | | |
| | | |
|---------------------
| | | |
| | | |
|---------------------

The bottom corner panel was smashed, i reckon a smaller than average person could have squeezed their way through with a bit of effort.

I'd guess they weren't around for too long, maybe 15 minutes tops? They searched everywhere pretty thoroughly but didn't stick around long enough to clear out everything of value (IE smaller TVs, some computers, $2k home theater setup, DVD player, consoles, clothing, CD/DVDs)

lol @ how long it must have taken you to type that door thing out in ASCII

they took 15k worth of my s*** in 15 minutes or so - had a video camera setup and from the time it was "unplugged" until the time I realised & got home to inspect from work, it was 15 minutes or so

they definitely know how to knock a place over quickly, I just can't believe it happens during broad day light
My place was no more than 30 meters from redfern police station in sydney and it happened at 10am .. brazen f***s

Yeah it's just sickening how f***ed up you would have to be to do this s***. At least they didn't break everything.

We've got receipts for the major stuff (TVs, laptops).. some smaller stuff like cameras/mp3s etc we might not though.

The ASCII thing didnt take that long to type, just drew one then copy and paste spam.

the key had gone missing.

what do you mean?

i hope you didn't deadlock your house and then leave a key inside. im of the school that they might breakin somehow but i want to make it really hard for them to get out, so deadlock doors and windows and stuff so they have to carry all my stuff out however they got in.

in your case it would have been through a really small hole in the window.

We don't have deadlocks :(

I mean the key to the fly screen door was taken. Probably should change the lock or something.

Guess we'll get deadlocks and an alarm system (I know most of these aren't gonna prevent the professionals thieves, not a bad deterrent to casuals though) by the time we get the stuff back in case they come back to hit us again.

I'd recommend it.

Alarm system on my joint calls about 4 separate mobile numbers when the alarm is triggered.
And provides audio to the house through set up microphones down the line so you can hear what's going on (surprisingly sensitive - can hear road noise from outside picked up by internal mics).
+ Sirens, motion sensors etc.

Wont stop anybody who really wants your gear, but most of these break and enters are for drugs or paying back dealers etc. that will probably run or draw a tonne of attention to themselves that hopefully someone will notice. (not that anybody pays attention to sirens and things like that these days).

Great.. I'm pondering installing security screens and new deadlocks on a house I just bought and I read this.

Now i'm out what.. 2k for new security measures? Leave me alone in my false safety next time.. it's cheap :(

Hey Alt that sucks. Just Last Xmas I had all my tools stolen from my garage. About $8000 of tools gone. Dick smiths (and Bunnings i think) do some cheap alternatives for home security. On my Garage window and 2 doors including the roller door I now have key armed Door Break screamers. Simple but pretty loud. I also have these in my house. I know its nothing to rely on but its something.

Oh this scares me!

I leave things open all the time - not doors or anything, but windows.

We are in an old queenslander, so theres no insulation and in summer its a nightmare. We leave the windows open all day and all night, theres no screens on anything, I guess I havent thought about it because we're up off the ground a bit. Maybe should start being a little more careful about it.

Sorry about your stuff! Thats not great for anyone to go through.

Really should get some contents insurance sorted out. My new laptop has theft insurance, but thats about it.

I got broken into back in May, my wife was away for the night, I was at home with the 3 kids. I went to bed around 1am, got up at 4am to the baby and someone had broken in through a front window, gone through most of downstairs cupboards etc. Fortunately only took wallet with $50 cash and a baby nappy bag. Cops reckon it was just kids cause they walked past the 2 22" LCD monitors, 2 Dual Core PCs, Digital Video camera, digital still camera etc. Biggest pain was losing wallet.....getting new id and cards is a total pain. Its very unnerving having someone break into your house while you are home.

Meh there's not really a problem with our area. In fact this is the first time we've had any intruders for the 12 years we've been living here.

Our immediate next door neighbours house is currently vacant so that probably didn't help us.

It's funny the way things turn out, when i woke up that morning i was really close to staying home from work and studying instead.

I don't think the first 5 panels are appropriate to alt-f4's situation, but the last panel is:

Update i guess. The fingerprint people came today and didn't really find much, they got a decent set off the glass door that was smashed - could be something, oh well.

My younger sister said that morning she saw some young guy walking up our street, then later when she was being driven to school he was further down the street walking up again.

We have had some builders etc doing work on the house recently - perhaps they could have tipped someone off as to the contents of the house and our movements.

Our house was broken into in February, flyscreen to an open window was forced. IT was a hot night and we'd never been broken into after living in the same house for 10 years....

They must have been disturbed because as well as the wallets and mobile phones lying on the bench they swiped our Dyson vacuum cleaner.
Yes, the vacuum cleaner. Forget the DVD player, digital video camera, computer gear... vacuum cleaner ftw!

Myself, missus and two year old daughter slept away, hearing nothing, police came and found nothing after we discovered what was going on... but after that the windows have security screens and the deadbolts are always locked now.

Don't think it can't happen to you because it hasn't happened before.
