Im looking at getting a widescreen lcd with the ideal response time for occasional gaming. Ive played on an 8ms and found it to be blurry.
The monitors im looking at are 4 & 5ms any one got exp with these? |

yeah in terms of user experience there won't be much of a diff between 8ms and 5ms i'm sorry to say.
(but you will grow a bigger e-penis of course.) |

what Paveway said.
Blure wont have been because of the refresh rate. If its under 16ms its fast enough which is every LCD in the last couple of years. The difference will be in the quality of the panel itself. Buy cheap, buy twice. |

My old LCD was 12ms and I never saw any blur at all. My new one is 5ms, and again, it's great for gaming too.
Only LCD I've seen blur on while gaming was a 25ms monitor. I don't know how you're seeing blur on a 8ms screen. |

my new dell 2407wfp-hc claims 5ms g2g, and 16ms b2b response and it does blur a little bit on fast games (etqw), but it isnt that bad. my old viewsonic 27.5" had a 2ms g2g response and had no visible blurring. mind you, i think the blurring on 5ms is pretty acceptable, its on the same order as my old dell p1330 21" crt.

Focus more on getting an LCD with a good viewing angle (with moderate response time), rather than going for the lowest possible response time. Viewing angle is a big deal, and anyone who has used a decent LCD would likely agree.

i think you're f***in seeing things if you think you saw blur on a 8ms screen Actually when I went from my CRT to my LCD (samsung 930BF) I noticed a bit of ghosting, however after a year of use I guess my eyes have adjusted because I don't notice it much anymore. |

^^ Considering you're meant to use the thing at eye level directly in front of it, wider viewing angles are wank factor most times and only becomes important if you plan to use it to watch TV/movies on where people may be spread out over the room rather than just in front of it. Since you didn't say what the primary use for it will be, only "occasional" gaming. Will it just be sitting idle when you're not gaming?
Obviously the bigger the angle the more you'll be able to move around and still see it. |

also comes into play as the monitor gets bigger (like 24"+) because bigger angles to the edge of the screen to your eyes means less contrast, and therefore differing shades of colours. TN panels are worse at the angle stuff, so aren't really suited to bigger lcds.
went from a 27.5" TN panel to a 24" PVA panel, massive difference. (TN panels typically have a 160 degree viewing angle, while PVA and IPS typically are 178 degrees in the stated specs of the monitor) |

thanks parabol, is this good? Yeah that's good enough for most purposes. Usually above 160-170 @ CR>10 is good. When you see them use the CR>5 metric, you know that they're trying to inflate their numbers to trick people, and that the screen is s***. wider viewing angles are wank factor most times Only going above 170 is wank factor. Reaching 170 is a good thing. My laptop LCD has such a low viewing angle compared to my more expensive desktop LCD that the sides and the top of the screen are a darker contrast and different shade than the centre. Bloody annoying. |

I used a 17" CRT flat for 2 years, i then went to BenQ 12ms 17" LCD, then i went to Samsung 19" 940N 8ms and now i have ended up with a 21" CRT @ 110hz.
Once i tried 21" CRT and then played on my 19" LCD 8ms, i couldn't stand it. CRT 4 LIFE! |

I reckon, I prefer my CRT over my LCD for gaming.
It's just a c*** to carry around to lans. edit: 21 inch? wtf, that must be bulls*** massive. My 17 inch is a bastard and extremely oversized. last edited by CHUB at 10:45:13 18/Oct/07 |
