Wow a lot of ignorant people in this thread.

Doing your own research is definitely better than relying on a GP. Remember, GPs are lazy people just trying to get through the day. If you actually have a medical problem, the only person you can rely on to look out for you is yourself. Thousands of people have died due to negligent doctors, and their own gullibility and trust in the health care system.

You have to keep in mind that most GPs are nothing but salesmen with medical training. They are in it for themselves, and they are highly financially driven. Usually a visit to an MD means you will get yourself on some advertising subscription list, and the doctor himself may even try to sell you a product or drug that is unrelated to your medical complaint.

If you do your own research at least you will know what kind of specialist doctors you will need to consult to get the job done.

How many of you know a computer technician that perhaps likes to pretend they know stuff that they don't? The more you understand your own illness the more you'll realise that a lot of doctors out there are FULL OF s***.

This thread is relevant to my interests.

I think I've snapped my Achilles. Perhaps google can help me download a patch to fix it?

While I agree that sometimes it's worth not taking your doctor's advice as gospel, it's not worth the risk of delaying something while you self-diagnose. See a doctor first, then research afterwards.

(btw, wasn't kidding about the achilles. sux2bme)

I think what Idol is trying to say is that you should learn as much as you can about your problem.. Maybe he knows what the problem is but wants to do more research about it and tips on natural treatments or something like that..

anyone heard of Dr. Death???

Doctors in Europe are far better than australia.. I went to a specialist in Australia that didn't know what was wrong with me regarding an ongoing problem I had and told me to keep using the medication I was already using "if it works".. I then wen't to a doctor in Europe that determined the real problem straight away, prescribed me medication and was fixed after like 3 days..

My wife broke her wrist in Australia in a bicycle accident, I took her to Emergency in the PA.. They took literally 5 xrays.. The reason why they took so many was that they couldn't find the fracture and my wife was in a lot of pain.. They had about 3 doctors looking at the xrays and their supervisors and couldn't find a thing.. They put her arm in a half cast and sent us on our way.. When my wife returned to Europe a few weeks later, she wen't to a doctor there, showed her the xrays and the doctor looked at one of them for a second and said "oh here it is"..

You're an idiot and you have been going to the wrong GPs. As it has already been pointed how many people do you think have died because they didn't go to the doctor and took the matter in their own unqualified hands?

When I need to see the doctor I head to the medical centre down the road and I have never had a single complaint about the doctors there. They are always careful and ask plenty of questions and make plenty of checks and stuff. I never feel as though I am being rushed through the door or anything like that.

I can't believe someone can call someone ignorant and then in the same breath try and say that using the interwebs to do a self diagnosis is a better idea then seeing an evil salesmen GPs who only want your money!!!!!!

I don't trust my GP for advice on my particular condition nor do I trust my surgeon entirely. As far as I am concerned GPs are just for check-ups, basic illnesses and referrals to specialists. And even specialists can have an outdated view which is where medical journals come in handy. You shouldn't blindly trust your GP, but they are a good starting point for further research. Also don't forget Occam's razor, when you hear hoof steps don't think zebras... its never lupus!! ;)

It is good for the person in question to research the condition him/herself as it doesn't hurt to know everything there is about it and how it affects that person...

I heard about a book, it was a true story.. There was a boy suffering from some sort of fatal disease (something to do with spinal chord and nerves etc) and the father was researching the condition in desperation to develop a cure for his son.. He actually did find a cure but it was too late for his son.. But as you expect the cure/medication is used today... He was just your average bloke, but through determination he did something amazing..

Ofcourse that is a one in a million, but it was a nice story...

I guess everyone is entitled to their opinion, as long as it remains that....your opinion. Over-generalising statements like:

1) All GP's are money-hungry, careless and don't know s***

and

2) European doctors are better than Australian doctors

sounds kinda dumb if all you have to back it up is your own s***ty experience.

In my OPINION, researching your own medical problems is a good idea (if reputable sources are used i.e cochrane, textbook, not some bulls*** website) as long as you use it as a guide to understanding the condition and making a contribution along with your doctor to your treatment.

Patients who pretend they know everything about their condition because they googled some stuff, in my OPINION, are often less satisfied with their doctor's advice because they simply don't understand most of medicine.

Then again, some GP's are s***.

I would believe that European doctors are especially good, particulary in the western european countries, and scandinavia, their standard of living is amazing.

I've also heard France is currently rated as the best public health system in the world.. this could be bollocks though.

After usig the NHS (UK public health system) for the past 2 years, it is absolutely s***, the GP's do not know s***.. i think going to them is actually detremental to your health!

My work recently brought in private medical though, I've been using that since and its fantastic, the quality of GP's and specialist ive seen on the private is far superior.. probably obvious.
