Top Gear presenter Richard Hammond escaped unhurt from a high-speed crash while filming the BBC TV show, less than a year after he nearly died in a jet-powered car, the BBC said today.

Hammond, 37, was shunted off the track during an endurance race at the Silverstone track near Northampton at the weekend.

"Richard wasn't hurt at all, but the car was damaged," a BBC spokesman said. "It was taken back to the pits and repaired before Richard carried on with the race."

Hammond was taking part in a 24-hour race called Britcar 24 Hour with co-presenters Jeremy Clarkson and James May and the show's anonymous professional racing driver, "The Stig".

The accident happened less than a year after Hammond suffered brain injuries when he crashed at 288mph at Elvington airfield near York.

He spent five weeks in hospital.

The Health and Safety Executive said in an accident report at the time that Hammond had not received sufficient training to drive the car safely.

How the hell can they say that? The video jim posted shows the tyre blowing up. How would even the stig have done any better? s***kunt drivers crash on the highway doing 100km/h when their tyre blows, driving a car they're used to and been driving for years, how are you going to do anything but crash when your tyre goes boom at 288mph?

What a bunch of f***ing morons.

No amount of training can save you from a tyre blowing out at 200+mph.

I think they are referring to the second crash, not the jet powered car.

Although what is there to know about driving a race car?

To add to the 'story is retarded' wagon, the f***en car was barely hurt. Simple pit repairs which allow you to return to the race means that it couldnt have been very big of a crash...

news.com.au has to keep up appearances I spose, its hard to maintain your image as being the most sensationalistic news outlet in Australia.

No that would have been the first. This one clearly isn't as serious.

I also doubt there was a serious investigation into hammond's Scandinavian flick in the super carry either.

This is what I assumed. I mean, like that other guy said how much training could you possibly require to drive, well whatever the hell he was driving? Hell, even I can drive a car round in circles. Though I am starting to wonder now, maybe they are talking about the second one and just hinting at hammond being a s*** driver or something.

I figured they must have been referring to the second crash, as there is no realistic way to train for a tyre blowout at 460kmph.

The idea is to eject before you land on the roof.

they're referring to the crash he just had, the video I showed is like a year old

nevertheless, I agree with the question since the news articles are mostly saying he was shunted off the track by another driver. what, he didn't have 'sufficient training' to watch out for other drivers hitting him?

Nothing obviously, you can just put anyone in a race car and they will be in full control immediately.

I've seen Jim do this several times, and he hasn't been hurt yet ... Although the in-car dvd player hasn't been the same since...

The question is if Jim's 4x4 was on a treadmill, would it still roll?

haha
yeah definitely need a tougher dvd player, it's annoying not being able to watch something while you wait for emergency crews to put out the fires and cut you out
