Topic: Nokia N95 vs SE W960i - Anyone have either?

So I have been looking at upgrading my Sony Ericson w810i to something with 3G for speedier browsing and internet access while on the move.

I have been looking at the Nokia N95 8GB and the Sony Ericsson w960i.

Both are very similar in size and wieght

N95 8GB dimensions
* Weight: 128 g
* Length(max): 99 mm
* Width(max): 53 mm
* Thickness(max): 21 mm

W960i demensions
* Weight: 119 g
* Length(max): 109 mm
* Width(max): 55 mm
* Thickness(max): 16 mm

Both have 8GB of storage, run Symbian OS, have WLAN, Bluetooth, email, web browsing, SIP VOIP clients and 240x320 displays.

Big differences;
N95 8G - 5MP camera, GPS and navigation system (does require subscription?)
W960i - 3.2MP camera, handwriting recognition, fm radio, and touchscreen interface.

So does anyone have a w960i or N95? Any thoughts or suggestions?

what do you want it for?

N95 is a camera phone? W960i is a walkman phone?

I've heard from inside sources that Telstra will have a 3G version of the iPhone early next year/late this year.

However, the iPhone is a piece of s***, and I wouldn't recommend it either way.

Heard nothing but good things about the N95.

As for the GPS, the default Nokia software has free maps and navigation, but you have to pay for voice navigation (not sure on exact pricing).

There are various other GPS apps you can buy online as well. There might even be ways to obtain them for free.

i haven't tried syncing via bluetooth. wifi generally works well for net and bluetooth works for pushing photos to pc.

What is the difference on battery life? I was a bit put off the n95 because I read it had fairly poor battery life.

who cares about battery life... i have two batteries. a charger at office, a dual charger at home and one in the car.

just using the phone moderately it will last over a day - i have never really tested its full life. once you start using camera, bluetooth and wifi it chews through the battery but else would one expect?

they have put a larger battery in the n95 8GB to relieve the battery issue.

buttons on the w960i are horrid to use, I love my w600i though the buttons are much better with there double sides and I actually only have it because I had the 950i first but it was stolen in the first week but that was enough to realise how much more inferior it is.

these 2 phones aren't really competitors anyway, the sony K series is it's high roller with all the features, the W series is meant to be for music etc hence walkman

eg. k800i and N73 are fierce competitors

I love my n95.

I use Roadsync for push email for work, and also use it as a mp3 player. Once you update the firmware, the GPS is really good too, as lock speed takes around 10secs max. It's horrid for GPS before you update it though.

From what I know, the Sony/Erricsons will be coming out with the AGIS NavFone software as is in the Nokia N95 soon (Nokia Navigator uses Route66, not AGIS NavFone). These new models will either have inbuilt GPS or will require a bluetooth GPS device. Either way you will be able to do the same thing as far as mapping and navigation as the Nokia N95.

I personally prefer the N95 and don't think any other will make such an impact. N95 8GB is considered to be the best mobile phone ever made. It's definitely a super phone which excels in all departments - mobile telephony, still photography, video recording, music, gaming, Internet surfing, and many other things. K850i has 5MP camera :D it looks rly nice that phone. Ive recently gone back to nokia but even though my e65 isn't flimsly or feels cheap or anything, I've noticed that some of the new sony ericsson feel much better in build quality when u pick them up. Im thinking of getting a sony ericsson next to see what the fuss is all about.

I got a n95 while waiting for the iPhone to come out over here. It is pretty good, although the latest firmware update killed the GPS tracking feature. Actually suprising how well symbian runs these days (compared to the 6600 series). Overall its been a pretty good phone, as you said battery life isn't that great, but it will last a day. One dodgy thing is that you cant charge through the USB port, if that was possible then battery life wouldn't be an issue at all. Camera is alright, its still a camera phone (good one, but a camera phone).

As for HTC, if you go that way, try before you buy (I bought the n95 to replace the O2 that I had, f*** having to pull out a stylus to write a bloddy sms).

All in all, good phone, will keep me going till the iPhone is out here (and before people start whining, yes I have used one multiple times, and for me personally its the best phone that Ive used, but hey, Im an apple fanboy).

Question: Is there actually a 3G plan which isn't stupidly expensive? Serious question, Im with vodaphone if anyone does know.

Yes, pretty sure it's just a standard micro SD card and they go up to 4gig I think.

You can get the n95 online and unlocked if you look around and probably a lot cheaper then you could from Vodafone. Unless you are after a plan ofcourse.

+1 for the N95. Probably the only thing I didn't like about it was the GPS. It costs to get the maps, and the thing takes ages to triangulate where the hell you are... and when I say ages, I don't mean 30sec - 1min, I mean 10-15mins!

Everything else is very sexy. The camera is excellent for happy snaps, although can be a bit slow at times. The video isn't bad either. Web browsing is ok for a screen of that size. You can browse in landscape which helps. In fact you can do everything in landscape if you want.

Also, the chicks dig it. :P

ps - If this has all been resolved, then ignore me. I cbfed reading everything...

Some cool apps for the n95 which allow it to mimic the iphone automatic screen rotate etc...

cheers infi, forgot about the rotating app..

the n95 is a killer phone..i got the n95 8gb..It has frozen a couple of times, but only when i was pressing buttons far quicker than what it could process them at..

Nokia have always and will always make good phone..

the quality of photos that come from it is outstanding, could be a bit sharper though..

hmmm..just tried the rotateme and it doesn't work on my phone..

rotateme should work fine, you just need to sign the application with a develop key with your IMEI phone number.

Tutorial here:
http://www.simplysymbian.com/2007/12/18/how-to-symbian-sign-your-freeware-applications-so-you-can-install-stuff-like-rotateme/

For the GPS lag, it gets better if you use it a bit with the assisted setting on (its semi-calculates based on the cell towers near, and then syncs in). I believe the new version of TomTom (v7) can use the internal GPS, im using Route 66 at the moment, its alright but the maps that come with the Nokia app are better.

Well i know the N95 8GB brand new unlocked is over a grand if im not mistaken. But the W960i kicks the N95 in terms of looks.

Not really sorry, best bet is try and find someone with a uni email that hasn't been registered.

Another solution:

These guys will do the fixing for you and just give you the file, sometimes takes em a day or two but they are really helpful.

N95 8GB is a pretty nice phone, easy to use

Battery life sucks though. I transferred 5gb of music onto it, and it just froze the phone constantly. Had to format it to actually get the phone back to a normal working speed.

the standard battery that comes with the n95 is the 850 ua thing but you can get a 3000 ua thing which lasts about 3 times longer

I've never had a problem with the battery life on my N95. There was one time when I was taking photos and emailing them all day (around 50 photos and emails) and I had to charge it when I got home, but I thought that was fair enough...
