Just a bit unsure right now on isomers.

Having to draw all the possible carboxylic acid molecules with the formula C5H10O2.

So I have 5 drawn out at the moment, is that all there should be?

Like I *COULD* draw more (branches going out in other directions), but that doesn't matter does it?? Can the single carbon to carbon bond between the hydrocarbon chain and the carbon on the carboxylic acid just rotate?

Example. (*'s for spacing)

*C
CCC-(COOH) is the same as

CCC-(COOH) ??
*C

f***ing stupid question I know, I'm thinking the bond to the functional group can just rotate and it is the same isomer... but I thought I would check before I draw a f***load of structures.

edit: fixed the spastic spacing, ignore the *'s)

It's the first lab report for Chemistry 2 at QUT, synthesising Aspirin.

I've got 90% of it done and the last 10% (this crud) I'm pretty sure about... but since some QGL members have done this course, it was worth checking.

The single carbon-carbon bond is free to rotate, like any single bond. That is part of what all that orbital hybridization jazz was about.

Cool, thanks for that Toll... well there was 7 anyway (don't know where I pulled 5 from).

So an ester molecule with the formula C4H8O2... I can only come up with 2 isomers, does that make sense?
