http://www.airsafe.com/events/airlines/kal.htm 6 August 1997; Korean Air 747-300; Agana, Guam USA: The aircraft crashed about three miles (4.8 km) short of the runway during a night time approach in heavy rain. Twenty one of the 23 crew members and 207 of the 231 passengers were killed. 1 September 1983; Korean Air Lines 747-200; near Sakhalin Island, Soviet Union: The aircraft was shot down by at least one Soviet air to air missile after the 747 had strayed into Soviet airspace. All 240 passengers and 29 crew were killed. Click the link, that's only 2 of 7 recent ones. WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!! I've gotta fly with those f***ers in just over a week! Oh well, at least it sounds like the death will be quick, unlike all those poor people packed into economy class with a pitchfork and some pepper spray, at least some of them may die from Deep Vein Thromobosis giving you and your family somewhere to say your last rights! |

Korean airlines have THE worst safety record of any of the major airlines. Its because they stick their most experienced pilots with some pilots that just got their wings, so there is a severe lack of communication on the flight deck and the junior pilot might not bring sometihng to the senior pilots attention in case he is wrong. So then the plane goes down |

lol... Yeah lyco I flew with them all the way to China and back (with stops in Singapore) and they are really awesome. The little screens are pretty good and they have an awesome variety or new release and classic movies. And the stewardesses are hot as in those sweet Singaporean outfits :) I have to get one of those for my gf... (she is from Singapore). |

Cool, well I got 20 hours in the air with them both ways, as well as a tiny bit on Lufthansa at the end of the trip as well, should be good. It's the freezing cold in Europe after that that I'm not looking forward to :(. |

Umm so what do you do with the new pilots? WOO WOO I KNOW put them in planes with less experianced pilots because somehow they will have better flight deck communication because they will both get flustered and understand each other!!!! Does it make sense to anyone else that you would group your most experiance pilots with your newest pilots, so the newer ones can learn what to do from a old master of the skies? If you want to fling blame mindlessly and with out any real idea ... You might want to blame the training organisation that allows people to get there wings and yet be scared to bring across something that might be a problem. Lets not even suggest that the co-pilot is to bring stuff to the attention of the pilot, even if he is unsure of it ... Just incase. |

you put them as flight engineers or second officers until they have lots of hours and experience doing that, then you promote them to first officer, then pilot, or you set them to work flying the regional routes in turboprops until they graduate to jets. You dont get a pilot that has just completed his ATP s*** and stick him on a jet airliner, this is what KAL do. Not only KAL do this, lots of airlines do it but KAL seem unlucky |

Funny I was pretty sure that a Flight Engineers duty was to check all the things that could go wrong all the tmie ... Like engines and cabin pressure. This from Avjobs.com
If what you are saying is true (that they suck so badly because they are new)... Then they are still going to suck badly here ... Lastly if your going to blame asian culture for it ... why do so many other asian airlines have much better safty records? The suck part would be the 2 in ten chance of being shot down by the russians and the one in ten chance of a bomb. |

2 in 10 chance of being stupid enough to stray over an incredibly sensitive Russian military installation, even after being warned about it and being told to turn away. |

Looking through that list, I only see seven - three of which were related to cold war tensions with Russia. Korean airlines have THE worst safety record of any of the major airlines. ...ignoring Garuda, Aeroflot, United, and many more airlines. KAL is safe when compared to some top-tier airlines Its because they stick their most experienced pilots with some pilots that just got their wings, so there is a severe lack of communication on the flight deck and the junior pilot might not bring sometihng to the senior pilots attention in case he is wrong. So then the plane goes down Again, kernel of truth, not the whole story. There was an incident with a China Airlines flight a few years back where the FO didn't tell the Captain that they were doing something wrong and they crashed the plane. There's a general sterotype because of this and a few other incidents that their culture gets in the way of safe flying. KAL isn't like that - they've had a recent influx of ex-Qantas pilots (including an immediate family member of mine), and that whole cultural attitude of "Don't correct the captain" isn't present at KAL, which is good to know. However, "Always respect the captain" is, as it is at many other airlines including Qantas (next time you're behind a QF captain at an airport and he tells a bad joke, watch for how many crew members around him try to fake a laugh) Exo, when/where are you flying? |

There was a great quote about airline safety in the brilliant Michael Chrichton novel Airframe...it pointed out that people dont give it a second thought about driving a car when they have had a little (or in some cases, a lot) to drink, yet worry when getting onboard a plane. The chances of being injured or killed are considerably higher in a car. |
