Hi,
As of tonight, my ADSL2+ service with TPG is up and running, and I've been fiddling around with my NetComm NB1 modem (s***ty 1 port thingo) to get speed good... Anywayz, I'm around 2-2.5Ks from exchange (its on Wynnum Rd), but I'm only getting a little over 6.5 mbps download speed! I apparently should get at least 8-10mpbs... DSL Status: Connected DSL Speed: 1023/6532kbps Its setup with ADSL2Plus modulation, PPPoE authentication with my new @L2TP.tpg.com.au login info. I downloaded a few test files and it never went above 650-700kb/s :( These are my connection stats atm: Us Rate (Kbps) 1023 Ds Rate (Kbps) 6532 US Margin 8 DS Margin 6 Trained Modulation ADSL2Plus LOS Errors 0 DS Line Attenuation 34 US Line Attenuation 17 Peak Cell Rate 2412 cells per sec CRC Rx Fast 0 CRC Tx Fast 0 CRC Rx Interleaved 25 CRC Tx Interleaved 0 Path Mode Interleaved Am I missing something or is it just a s***ty phone cable setup? I plan on getting a decent 4 port router/switch coz my bro wants to hook up Xbox Live (for 360). Also I've actually run a phone cable about 15 m down to my room under the house where my modem is sitting on my desk and so I'm going to have the new modem at the phone cable terminal and send an ethernet cable to my room instead. This *may* help with the phone cable crap.. Anyone had similar dissappointing speeds with ADSL2+? |

15m cable!? holy crap .. you should temporarily move your pc and router closer to the phone line (with shorter cable (less than 2m)) to see if that makes any difference. It should.
Another thing to try is to disconnect all phones and filters from the line and only have your router plugged in. That'll show you if you've got noisy devices on your line lowering your sync rate. Don't bother testing download speeds if you're only sync'd at 6.5Mbps .. cause you'll never get more than 650-700kB/s. (I used to live 2.5km from my exchange back when I was in St Lucia. Got about 7Mbps) last edited by parabol at 19:11:38 26/Jul/07 |

Hmmm, yeh I'm suspicious that the cable would be a factor. Gonna get the new gear on the weekend sometime so hopefully it'll make the speed a little better...

Also the only two options (for less than $150) at Computer Alliance are the Billion 7300 4 port modem/router/switch or the Netgear DG834 which is essentially the same and around 90 bucks. Anyones I should steer clear from? I noticed that the Billion's description had Annex-M in bold. Not sure exactly what this though its got something to do with the cable's bandwidth or frequency selection or something don't it?

Annex-M can give you up to about 2.5Mbps upstream, if your ISP offers it (most don't).
Stay away from the DG834 .. it's s***. I'm running one and I have most of the features disabled and blindly forwarding packets to my WRT54GL for proper and faster processing. |

f*** that netgear its s***
get the billion, it rules man, everything slows down adsl2, you want the shortest cables you can, and the best line filters id check whinge pool to see what the best setup options are for tpg im about 2.5 from my exchange and sync (used to) around 16000/1000 with my billion (i have a netgear dg834 as well, it was substantially lower) my house has s***ty phone lines though, so until i get a tech out, im back to adsl1 speeds i miss adsl2 last edited by Spook at 19:20:52 26/Jul/07 |

i live probably less then 1k from my exchange and have a 50m lan cable going from my modem to my router and i get a steady 2.2mb/ps, also the lan cable was made cheaply by myself with my greasy fingers, move closer to your exchange and tell the 14yr old in your area to stop downloading porn. problem fixed, also get off tpg and there dodgy ways.

50 m lan cable wont make much difference since its theoretical bandwidth is at least 5 times that of the MAX bandwidth of ADSL2.
So Billion 7300 it is then. If I have a filter for the modem's phone cable does that make much difference? Coz atm the ph cable's going straight into the modem. Only the phones have filters... |

less then 1k from my exchange and have a 50m lan cable going from my modem to my router So? Your Cat5 cable doesn't affect your ADSL sync rate in any way. Your modem has already demodulated the analog signal off the copper wire by that point and it's now a [more] robust digital signal over ethernet. You could double the cable length to roughly 100m and it'd still work fine. |

yer, only filter the phones
u can try unplugging your phone completely and power cycling your modem see if that makes a different to sync speeds |

Yeh gonna do that..
For short downloads (i.e 5-20seconds) it goes to about 500kb/s. But for the Mass Effect E3 trailer (86.7mb) I got a max of 922.4Kb/s :D |

3dee, turn off the modem plug it upstairs with a phone cable less than 2m and turn her on and check the sync speed then i think youll find a futher increase in speed.
to go off the problem you had with the mdoem does anyone know if the belkinj F5D8636-au4 would be slowing my connection? im currently at You are 1211 m from REDC as the crow flies. Estimated cable length of 1877.05 m. Estimated speed of 15000 when infact my sycn speed struggles to get 2.5megabit/s i download around 200kb/s and my phone cable is 1.5m?? |

Billion is awesome. Anyone who uses a netgear or dlink or worse modem is missing out.

Billion is definitely good. You can get the 7300G for $85 from JMG with a new TPG account.
I recently hooked up to TPG in Yeronga and got the Dynalink 1025W as it comes highly reccomended. You can get cheap modems routers at JMG if you're signing up to TPG. I got the the 1025W for $65 + $12 shipping! http://www.jmgtechnology.com.au/index.php/cPath/134_139 last edited by partyhat at 17:10:20 26/Aug/09 last edited by partyhat at 17:10:49 26/Aug/09 |

I only get ~450KB/s with my Dynalink 1025, I suspect the local lines are pretty old, though.

Make sure you set it to ADLS2+ and don't leave it on Auto for connection type.
I bought a 7300N last week and upgraded to ADSL2+ and decided to check my speed after reading this thread and discovered I was only getting about 11k because it had it connected with ADSL2 modulation instead of ADSL2+. Getting 24k now :D |
