Game is currently being patched (ie. servers are down) and I hate to think how huge the download tomorrow will be.

Basically its a free expansion called "Shores of Evendim"(some might argue its more "the rest of the game"). Adds a new area, a new raid instance, epic armour, 100 quests ...

Has 3 pages of notes.
Class things, the expansion, bug fixes
Crafting
Quests

Very comprehensive list, hopefully unlike WoW. All patches and changes are actually documented.

3300 files oO and no alternate download.

The only good thing is the download is flying and doesn't use that dodgy Blizzard downloader (it would have to be the worst BitTorrent client ever made)

Yeah... Blizzard don't comprehensively document any of their patch notes

You know, WoW isn't the only other mmorpg out there obes, I do recall daoc having its own patch downloader and it was 1000x worse than anything put together. The only reason I can see LOTR-O having no problems with its downloader, is because there is only 10 people trying to download the patch, as opposed to 8 million or whatever it is using the blizzard one.

Casa... After every patch when I was playing WoW there was a number of forum topics about the undocumented changes, some minor some major (a 2 seconds in google will confirm that). So while WoW certainly has patch notes, it rarely was accurate or comprehensive. Some times Blizzard would come back and revise the patch notes eg. 2.0.1 and some times they'd deny them but mostly just ignore them. If that has changed then that's a good thing. And I am not saying that Lotro is doing that ... but with 3 pages of patch notes I sure hope its comprehensive.

And Casa, any which way you paint it the Blizzard downloader is awful... download the torrent file, change your port in uTorrent and use uTorrent to download it. Patches that were taking hours to download took minutes. Same tracker, same torrent file ...

ps. 8 million people do not play on the US servers, which is where you get your patch from.

pps. I don't care if only 10 people are playing LOTRO, I'm enjoying it. More to the point, if WoW is so great and has so many people and your enjoying it, why are you trying to convince me of it's greatness ?

*edit* awesome dan!

Don't get the Special Ed!!!
Atari's special ED is not worth it.
$20 for a s*** folded A5 (1/2 an A4), blurry photocopied map. And a s*** Audio CD of in game music.

We play on the US servers. No US download as far as I can see. (ie. Dan sucks)

As usual the tears have begun on patch day about the "nerfs", at least they are documented for maximum tears.

So I downloaded the patch for nothing? Oh well, at least it was unmetered. Was hoping not to have to sit through an annoying download before playing the game.
Obes, there is also an in game item you get "Glass of Aglaral which gives you protection from evil", I'm guessing this is rubbish?

Gives you 1 hope for 5mins, cool down is 1 hour.

Its ok. Can buy player made potions that do better. (and no they won't stack).

I remember daco having it's own patch downloader, but asif anyone used that instead of downloading the awesome seperately-available patch files distributed around cool download sites like ausgamers.

Plus the blizard torrent client sucked long before the massive uptake of WoW, and bt should work BETTER with more people anyway, so that's no excuse. Nor is claiming to have been posting only for the sake of baiting obes

Jim sticks up for me!

PS: Saw LotR-O at a friends place on the weekend and it looks pretty nice, very decent graphics and the scenery is well detailed but didn't get a chance to get into some gameplay. I'm not sure it's the game for me but if one of those buddy passes comes up then PM me and I'll give it a shot.

no, I made my post, with the intention of baiting, got a bite, and now your coming out of nowhere to stick up for him? I think its cute!

Your only claiming that I'm a douche because the blizzard downloader has always been s***? Pretty sure I knew that aye. Hence I made a comment about agn/files

Ok, I'm having some troubles. I've installed the game, updated it and fired it up. After the movies I get the character creation screen, once I've picked my character and named it, I've selected the "Create Character" button and nothing happens. If I press the enter key, it allows me to select another option, so I try "Enter Middle Earth" and again it just sits there doing nothing. Any ideas?

Can't say I have ever heard of anyone having a problem like that.

What video card you got ? are drivers reasonably new ? XP ? or Vista ?
Tanaka Khan

Vista, 2 8800 GTX's with the latest drivers (this is my $14000 gaming rig). I installed Lotro on my secondary gaming machine and I can create characters no problems at all (vista, Geforce 7950 GT). I can however, once I've created the characters on my secondary rig, play them on my main machine so I know there are no firewall hassles or conection problems. I might give it a reinstall later and see what happens, but at least I can play.

As so far as playing Lotro after comming from WoW for so many years, some things feel differant while others feel the same. I do think the screen seems some what emptier than in WoW.I guess I'll give it a real run this weekend and see how it goes.

8800s and vista ... nice rig.

but .. nvidia's drivers are poo
LOTRO was having a lot of issues with that set up until nVidias very latest drivers. That said there are still issues. Apparently EQ2 and Lotro (both games have huge textures and lots of them) have issues in Vista (regardless of ATI/nvidia) after playing for a while if moving around a lot. *shrug* vista ? game ? hardware ? driver ? they all are blaming each other.

eg quotes from the support forums.

In another forum thread it was discussed that XP32 and Vista32 have caps on the amount of ram a single process can access and allocate.
For XP32 it's about 1.7GB and for Vista it's about 1.6GB, per process each.

Some people claims its vista and having more then 2 gig ?
Just to keep this post going so Turbine might do something. I have Vista 32bit, intel dual core, radeon 1900xtx, 4gig mem. I crash about every half an hour.

versus
This is very interesting to me as I run almost identical system: Vista 32, intel dual core 2, Radeon X1950Pro, 2Gig of Ram. I have never crashed in Lotro, and I run through Bree all the time. Now I ride my own horse through Bree as well. I typically play from four to six hours in a session.

Anyways many threads on vista and lotro issues, and lotro and 8800 issues. And lots of random bitching about things like the dx10 version of Company of heroes being unplayable on their uber rigs.

You may also need to find that you need to go to trouble shooting in the options and turn your engine speed down to high instead of very high (apparently thats the priority it sets the game at, and very high with high end video card can actually cause Lotro to steal the entire cpu hehe). If your card has more then 512mb ram on it, people have said turning the texture cache down to 0 fixes their issues.

Also if you have a sound card with EAX, turn off EAX in game, because EAX doesn't work properly with vista (in any game supposedly ?)

I do think the screen seems some what emptier than in WoW

That's because you can't have a thousand mods that basically play the game for you. No threat meters, raid timers, no 1 button do everything for me with out thinking mods, no decursives or "grid"s, no metmap/gatherers/auctioneers.

I really dont think not being able to create characters on my gaming rig is vista or hardware related, otherwise I'd imagine I wouldnt even be able to play the game (2 8800 gtx's, quad core, 4 gig of ram).

Besides that, I'm having fun but still learning all the in's and outs. =)

Well, put it this way...

My s***ty old AMD 3000+ with AGP 7800GS and 2 Gig .. runs fine.
My s***ty old Tecra, also fine. (Heck it won't even play Titan quest)
My new Satellite Pro, also fine.
Girlfriends Dell laptop with s***ty integrated intel GMA ... fine (much better then wow ran)
All XP.

People running bleeding edge hardware (usually an 8800) and the latest MS OS ... problems
And its not just in LOTRO, its EQ2 and a bunch of other games...
And its rock, paper, scissors with the blame game between the Game dev, the Hardware vendor and MS. Dunno who is to blame, but it's one of the reasons I am putting off my upgrade atm.

So... It could be vista. The satelite is dual core, the Amd is old Barton core, the Tecra is an old centrino spec. So while the quad core might be causing issues, Other high end non quad cores have issues but I don't think its multi core related.

Leaves a few candidates.
The video hardware or its drivers.
The motherboards in these high end systems (unlikely I would think)?
Vista (try XP, XP64 or vista64 ?, some people under XP still have problems but most don't seem to have)
Massive buckets of ram ? (unlikely but who knows)

I remember the first few quad core reviews I saw mentioned problems with quad cores and directx ?

All I know is I use a very old nVidia driver (91.47) because it has less problems and runs faster then new ones. Says to me nVidia drivers are s*** generally speaking. I am hoping the ATI 2900s turn out to be decent once they finish their drivers.

note. I did have crashes when I first got LOTRO, I was blamming LOTRO. Ran memtest86, turned out the ram was crappy (it is 5 years old), bought new ram and I stopped crashing.

Really? It actually feels a bit more crowded than WoW for me, but then I run a pretty minimalist interface in wow scaled down to the lowest ui scale setting. From the patch notes it sounds like they've put ui scaling in now, but you gotta get custom skins to do it, better than nothing I guess.

The only two things which really bug me about the interface are the fact that all your buffs and debuffs show up as tiny little icons with no information under your character portrait, and pets not showing up in the party frame. Apart from that, the UI is pretty good out of the box, which is a lot more than can be said for Wow's.

Its not so much knowing what they are, its more having to mouse over them to find out how long is remaining on a certain buff/debuff that annoys me.

Yeah they do.

Oh, I didn't think they did, I was in a group with a champion and his herald dude didn't show up on my party screen, then he got s***ty at me for not healing it and letting it die. Granted, thats the only time I think I've actually grouped with someone with a pet so far, so it might have been a once-off bug or something.

Man heralds make me laugh, they look so witless.
