Hi guys my poker game has a few spare seats that I would like to fill. Stakes are $.50/$1 NLHE, fixed buyin of $100. I know for a fact some of you play online so why not try your hand @ live play?

Address: My house is in the Ashgrove area. Sms me (Dave) for specific address on 0422 963 971 if your keen.

Time: 2pm onwards (Sunday June 10th).

Notes: There will be some free booze on offer, and no rake as per Qld law.

Apologies in advance to Trog et al if this post is inappropriate.

Mooby, I'm trying to make it a regular midweek game, say a Tuesday or Wednesday nite. I'll keep you up to date.

Persay, are you being sarcastic? 50c/$1 NL can play hella big when it's live. A standard buyin/rebuy would be $100, so when you get 8-10 people at the table there is often up to ~$2,000 in play by the end of the night.

I find that the blind sizes are a bit too small for the buyin, for example $1/2 NL normally plays with a buyin of like $60 or 80? Means you can have a limped pot for like $8 when everyone is sitting around with HUGE STACKS...?

some people see bets more as multiples of the big blind rather than % of their stack. blinds are there to stimulate action. as a super rock i can play twice as tight in his game than if it was $1/2 and also making a $10 raise preflop means completely different things because people have less invested in the pot and it skews all decision making. also making $1 raises on the flop = lawl

those are just the starting blinds, there's no reason they wouldn't be on 15 minute timer or the such to raise.

in cash games, blinds normally don't go up.

buy-in is normally set at 100 times the big blind.

Is it legal to have a real $ game not in a club?
Not that I'm at all against it, just silly to advertise on a public forum if it is illegal.

In the eyes of the law poker is a game of "mixed skill and luck." Yes home games are legal in Qld, so long as the host doesn't profit (by rake, 'entry' fee' or 'food fee' etc). For tournaments, %100 of monies paid in entry fees must be returned in prizemoney to the players.

Persay: The standard buy in for cash games is 100BB. Often people will buy in 'short' (for various reasons) for 20-30BB. Good, deepstacked games are 200+BB. I don't know how you can say the $.50/$1 blinds are "too small" for the stack sizes?!

If you play online you will notice pokerrooms tend to have a max buyin of 100xbig blind, ie $5/$10 max is $1000, $3/$6 is 600 & $25/$50 is $5000.

Having 100+BB stacks makes play much more challenging. You have to make betting decisions past the flop. (Correct) turn & river play become critical. There is more room to move/bluff etc, and you have more of your stack to lose (relative to pot size). Mistakes are magnified; and others' mistakes are how you make money in poker. If nobody ever made mistakes, there would be no incentive to play. The best cards would always win (in the long run).

Here are some hands I played in a (deep-ish) $1/$2 live game yesterday. After buying in for $200 I'm up to $285 or so and play is mostly 10 handed. Hope you enjoy my suffering, NLHE is such a fickle, bitter old bitch...

Hand 1 (Pocket Jacks suck!)
Hero is in the small blind with JcJh.
Villain is on the button with $180-ish.
7 folds, Villain raises to $7.
-Villain had been playing META tight for 2 hours, so he may just have a hand. But probably a standard button steal >75% of the time. Raising is > calling > folding in this spot. By calling we have to play out of position against 2 players when the Big blind comes along for the ride...
-Hero re-raises to $25.
Big blind folds, Villain calls $18 (No Ace or King on flop yo!).
-Pot: $52 Flop: As-Qd-Th.
-Pretty much the only hands I beat that raise, then call a re-raise preflop with are 99 & 88. I can't beat s*** on this board. Not even a s***ty QJ, and villain has QJ smashed.
-Hero checks like a pussy bitch.
-Villain bets $25.
-Hero thinks briefly about check-raise bluffing the villain all in for his last $130 then thinks better or it.
Hero disgustedly mucks JJ face up meekly expecting sympathy from fellow players.
Villain shows Kd-Jd and says "I was hoping you had AK/AQ.

Hand 2: (The Day of the Flopped Nuts)
About 25mins in I'm in the Big blind with KcTc. 4 people call preflop and I check.
Effective stacks: $200.
-Pot: $10 Flop: Qh-Js-9d
-Small blind checks, Hero checks, and attempts to reptilian-like regulate breathing and heart rate.
-Checks all round (Meta gay!).
-Turn: 4s - SB checks, Hero throws out a fiver like it's *the* most obvious steal ever, all fold.
Hero groans and slams the KcTc face up on the table.

Hand 3: (Worst Played Hand of Poker in Aus)
2 hours in I'm up to $250 (yay me grinding at $25/hour, not too shabby).
Preflop: 3 folds, Chip Leader ($350) raises in middle position to $10. Standard opening raise has been to $7 or $8. Hmmm. Next two people call $10. Hmmmmmmm.
-Hero is on the button and looks down at AhAc (BOOYASHAKA!).
-Hero raises to $30 because he can.
Chip leader calls $20, as do the other two (er wtf is going on here?!?! I ask).
-Pot: $123. Flop (in order!): As-4d-2c. Well f*** me. Bells and whisltes are going off in my head. None of these guys are sick enough to play 35 in this spot in a bazillion years. The best part is all 3 have to act before me...

Worst part is they all check. Now this is where it got gay. Even gayer than when the ghosts came out of the woodwork halfway through Pirates of the Carribean #1 (which had been quite a swashbuckling fillum until that point).
All day I had been betting the s*** outta the flop when I had raised preflop, or when it'd been checked to me in position on the flop. I figured if I bet out here, one of them will be canny enough to think I'm bluffing and raise me, right? RIGHT?!
-Hero bets $65.
-Three folds: JKSHDFJKASLJDLAKSDKL times_one_million! The f*** didn't I check-check-ety check check!?
-One of them woulda tried to buy the pot on the turn and I could have smooth called in position, giving the impression I had pocket Kings/Queens and wanted to get to showdown cheaply.
-This would have built the pot nicely (to $200 or so), and forced them to make a mistake out of position on the river, ie only way they can win in their eyes is to move all in for their last $120/$150 into a $200 pot.

In the end I cashed out for $280, which was super duper meta lame, as it should have been $500. I got bluffed out of a $125 pot on the river by the chip leader (when I *KNEW* he was bluffing). The fact he was a Kiwi almost put me on perma tilt, as I'm sure he was bluffing me because I was wearing a Wallabies jersey. I nearly went all in preflop next hand:

Hand #4 (f*** the f*** Off with the Flopped Nuts Bull-f***ing-s***!)
Stacks: $300 & $260
-Dealt to Hero: AcKs.
-Hero announces he's on tilt, looks at cards and announces a tilt induced raise to $8 in 1st position.
Villain on my left is a motherf***ing bluffing mofo, and raises to $25. 7 folds.
-Hero licks lips and calls $17.
-Pot: $53. Flop: 9d-9c-8s. Hero thinks about stealing but checks. Villain checks.
-Turn: Th. Hmm Ace hi prolly good here, but better of check-calling villain's bluff? Villain quickly checks again...suss, what is he up to?
-River: 7c. Gay. Board is T-9-9-8-7. Wtf do I beat here? AQ? Any 6 or J makes a straight. Lucky I check not wanting to waste any more money, still STEAMING over previous hand.
-Villain bets $50 into a $53 pot. It's such a f***ing bluff, and makes me think he might have AK too.
-Hero takes off cape and folds it neatly into bag before folding.
-Villain tells me to get f***ed, and tables 9h9s for flopped quads. Wow. Nice. Lucky an Ace or King didn't pop out, and thank f*** I didn't move all in preflop. Now I'm off tilt, and life is good...

interesting story. nice fold at the end. on-tilt is a dangerous sweet tasting poison when it is coursing through your veins.
