my two friends are keen on gettign work driving trucks or whatever in and around the mines in the mid to north qld mines. i told them id have a look but didnt have much luck finding anything. they dont have a degree in mining or engineering but are in the process of gettign truck licences and will get whatever other safety/qualification requirements are needed. recruitment agency or links to jobs that may be relevant would be much appreciated. |

they prefer chicks driving the trucks now, less wear and tear on drivetrain and less external damage

actually its not that they prefer chicks driving, its just that its one of the easiest jobs for women to do in the mining industry so its more of a 'girls' job. they still however hire anyone no matter what gender.
your mates might also want to look into getting the surface & underground generic tickets. cost about 800-1000 and you can get them done wherever they are headed off too. you do not need any kind of qualification such as engineering certificate if you want to be driving trucks, go underground, work on surface or in smelters. they only way it would help if you are looking for a career in mine developments etc. any s*** kicker with there generics can get a job. |

Yeah Jim's right, that opinion (about the chicks) has reached just about every mining site that my brother has worked at (he's a boom welder)... he has worked in dozens of places in central and north QLD.

actually its not that they prefer chicks driving, its just that its one of the easiest jobs for women to do in the mining industry so its more of a 'girls' job. they still however hire anyone no matter what gender. I'd heard differently, so I googled a little: Women have priority for driving the larger and costlier trucks. "Women drivers are safer and easier on the machinery," said mine spokeswoman Amy Knous. Women have become especially sought-after in the once macho world of mining, particularly as truck drivers like Gogilis. Since they tend to drive the big trucks with a gentler touch, they exert less wear and tear on the tyres, which are also in short supply. The number of women in Rio's (Tinto) ranks has risen from just over 11 per cent in 2000 to 15 per cent. Zinifex Rosebery mine manager Fran Burgess said that leading minerals companies wanted women because they were skilled and gentler on equipment. “They keep trucks cleaner, have a softer touch on the gears and expensive tyres last longer,” she said. |

My Dad works in the mines and when I was younger used to travel around with him and the rest of the family. Anyways if you are looking to get into the mines I suggest going to mining recruitment agencies around. My Dads mate has the largest mining recruitment agency in the Southern Hemisphere ... go to www.jda.com.au and send in your resume ... they'll get you an interview to see what you are looking for and what you might need.
On a further note if you want to drive trucks you'll need to get a heavy duty license and display to them that you have the necessary skills to operate that type of machinery. |

Further to what Jim said ...
Women drivers are more preferred than Male drivers when it comes to driving trucks to due to the fact that they take care of the trucks better and do not argue as much. I know that it does not sound believable but it's the honest truth. So if you're a woman and reading this and want to earn some great $$$ then I completely suggest to apply for a mining truck driver position. |

the biggest problem with women driving the big trucks is that they can't park them at the end of the day

police clearance blue card medical general induction to opencut/underground HR licence(also big bonus) costs around $1k I'm currently in progress of doing all of this myself..hoping to be in by end of year.. WA pays little bit more aswell.. general labourers can get like 70-100k a year.. ;) driving trucks and that get bit more and so on |

Hey wait, aren't these trucks supposed to be driven at mine sites (Rheatorical question - I lived in Mt Isa for half of my life) ?
If their built to drove around places like this then I don't think it matters if a womans gentler touch is in the driving seat, unless she's bobbing up and down on the guy who's really in the seat. |

there are no sources for any of that bs you just made up.try googling for 'sauce' instead of 'source' - I know, it's crazy!@ thanks for your research jim, id rather take my own experience than your 'googleing'yeah cos you're a better authority on a mine's position than their spokesperson |

The mine tour I went on said they preferred female drivers, less wear and tear.
Seems these mines are lying to us public in so many ways... |
