There's an awesome free program called SUPER:

http://www.erightsoft.net/SUPER.html

Site might not look the best but it has insane file-format support.
Video format:

gp/3g2(Nokia,Siemens,Sony,Ericsson) asf, avi (DivX,H263,H263+,H264,XviD,MPEG4,MSmpeg4 etc..), dat, fli, flc, flv (used in Flash), mkv, mpg (Mpeg I,Mpeg II), mov(H263,H263+,H264,MPEG4 etc..), mp4(H263,H263+,H264,MPEG4), ogg, qt, rm, ram, rmvb, str (Play Station), swf (Flash), ts (HDTV), viv, vob, wmv

Audio format:

aac, ac3, amr, mmf, mp2, mp3, mp4, mpc, ogg, ra, wav, wma

Here I've pre-selected divx to .mov as an example:

i found mediacoder pretty decent for this type of thing, but that SUPER one looks a bit friendlier to use

SUPER I've heard is pretty good but I don't think it's open source so mediacoder ftw!

edit: I just tested encoding with mencode (from the mplayer package) with the Transformers trailer to xvid. I used the following command line:

mencoder.exe transformers.mov -ovc xvid -xvidencopts pass=2:bitrate=800 -oac mp3lame -o transformers-xvid.avi

Took like 10 mins (core 2 dual 6600) and spat out a great xvid.

You can download mplayer here torrent

Like I said, crap site. It does some referrer dodginess that often dumps you back to the main page.

1. Visit: http://www.erightsoft.net/SUPER.html
2. Scroll to bottom and click "Start Downloading SUPER © right now"
3. On next page click "download and use"
4. On next page Scroll to bottom and click on one of the mirrors.

Ok f*** that's a lot of steps. Pays off though as the program is relatively powerful.

edit: ^^^^ you also need to have scripts enabled I think.

Does it really matter if it isn't open source? It's still free. Or are you worried about non-free bits being included in it and distributed illegally?

I'd be massively surprised if SUPER wasn't comprised of open source bits.

Has anyone got any experience with mencoder? I can't figure out how to use the xvid profile stuff.

That's actually a really good point.

I doubt they wrote so many codecs from scratch. I also doubt they would have bought licenses for proprietary codecs only to release the program for free. Their website gives credit to some OSS projects but not much more than that.

Hmmm, bastards.
