Some items of hardware (eg. ram) is nearly half the price of the same components here in OZ. $200 cheaper for some video cards. I am guessing its because the US Dollar has slowly been sliding and our local wholesalers are happily still selling it at old prices, or their wholesalers are Asian based.

CPUs and things aren't as big a discount. But its still over priced here.

Warranty is probably a concern (not many of the hardware vendors would have worldwide warranties).

Newegg isn't a scam site. Australia is just massively overpriced.

Newegg is a popular online store overseas .. see them mentioned fairly regularly on different sites/forums. Warranty would definitely be the only problem with buying stuff overseas (or even interstate) as you'd have to send it back which is effort ++. And I know Obes doesn't like anything that requires effort!

Yeah, I've purchased all sorts of hardware from the U.S. like raid cards, ram and cpu's. I don't think newegg ship internationally though, at least they didn't last time i checked. A good place to look for U.S. prices is pricewatch, it's pretty much the US version of staticice. One of the places I purchased from before is provantage because they were pretty good with prices on 3ware raid cards. The sucky thing about purchasing from the U.S. though is that a lot places don't tend to ship internationally and the ones that do often require bank transfers or western union for payment. I can't say I've ever recieved anything faulty but it is a risk you take. You can generally ship it back to them but it'd be a pain in the ass.

when you are talking about 400 for a card instead of 650 ... its a fair bit.

Besides from my experience, all Brisbane retailers regardless of price offer the same level of service (ie. very low).

I have read that newegg service is top notch... Check out their terms in regards to overseas warranties first.

at 32 postage ... you can ship it backwards and forward for 4 return trips and still be ahead.

Import duties?

Only if its over $1000 (or a series of purchases at around the same time are over $1000

Q: Does Newegg.com ship internationally?

A: Newegg.com does not currently ship internationally; we only deliver to locations within the United States and to Puerto Rico.

There are postal forwarding services in the US. eg. http://www.myus.com/ and http://www.usabox.com/

And no it hasn't changed.

But there are other places like http://www.excaliberpc.com that do ship directly.

I've purchased from excaliberpc before. Good service, but I only bought from their cause they had something no retailer in Aus had (Athlon XP-Mobiles).

I have the same problem with all the bike parts and cycling jerseys/gloves etc I bring into the country (cos they're such a bloody ripoff here - AUD1300 for XTR cranks retail, or USD549 retail). Fortunately the upper limit before you get hit with customs fees in Australia is AUD1000 so it's not a huge problem.

As Trog said though, the problem is warranty. If anything breaks, it'll have to go straight back to Hong Kong, Taiwan or Japan.

You only have to worry about GST and customs fees if it's over AUD1000 in value, as has already been stated multiple times.

As for GBP1.00=USD1.00, do you have any idea how insanenly good for us that would be if true? It's actually USD1.98=GBP1.00 atm.

hahah lawl! Did you seriously say that ?

The US dollar has been going backwards for ages, while the British economy has been quite strong.
Hell even the Aussie dollar is around the 82-83c mark.

some years ago I thought the same! I jumped online to buy my Voodoo2. It came quickly in the mail, and ran quite well for a while. I paid $350AU, compared to ~$450AU (locally) for the 16mb model. meh - it died, and didn't get replaced for 4 months. Lots of very, very angry emails there. By the time it was sent back to me I had moved house and bought a secondhand Voodoo 1. I swore off doing business with non english speaking companies from that point on (though the sales guy had a grasp on English, the service staff could barely answer my emails)

if the American options look good I'd certainly give it a try. I don't know that I'd buy much other than a vid card - maybe a new case.

all Brisbane retailers regardless of price offer the same level of service (ie. very low).

I've always expected that someone from the old Ausgamers lans of days gone by would have stepped up and started a business that soley served online gamers around the nation. I dunno, maybe someone did and found there's no point in pursuing it.
