What the s***, Windows XP Home can't resize (shrink) it's own NTFS partitions!
I want to install Ubuntu on my laptop but the Ubuntu installer failed trying to resize my partitions (Fortunately without toasting the whole thing). I am thinking about trying the GParted LiveCD but does anyone have any other tips? Thanks |

I used the gParted live cd to shrink the NTFS partition on my parents XP system so they could dual boot (I got sick of fixing wireless card problems on their computer too), and it worked a treat. Don't use it on Vista partitions though because Vista has a newer version of NTFS and you'll corrupt it.

fips?
edit: actually I'm not sure it does ntfs, been years since I used it. Partition magic does it if you dare risk using that. last edited by whoop at 01:11:27 27/Apr/07 |

Partition Magic will do exactly what you want without corrupting data.
Vista can resize it's own partitions last edited by HERMITech at 07:54:17 27/Apr/07 |

if it is a dynamic disk i'm pretty you can shrink it. if it's just a basic disk with an ntfs partition you can't. hermitech has the score with the P Magic.

I used gparted on a 2003 ntfs partition once ... it somehow managed to expand the partition so there was no more free space, but didn't give it to the existing partition.
So I'd vote, no to it. |

Why would you if there's free software that does the job just as well? not to mention I heard a few stories about partition magic not being so magical. Mind you I guess anything that can dynamically resize a partition full of data would inherently be dangerous. Just do what I do trog (xp pro) move all the data onto either another partition or onto a DVD, nuke the partition & make 2 smaller ones. |

can you stick the hd into a Vista machine and shrink it in there?
*edit* did you get the new MS Action Pack (or similar) for work? It comes with instructions for howto make a Vista Live DVD. You should be able to boot off that and resize. Just a theory atm though.. I slept thru most of my Vista training last edited by koopz at 15:18:52 29/Apr/07 |
