Did anyone here by a PS3 at launch? Just looking for a few quick impressions as I'm looking to buy one within the next few weeks.

im personally putting off buying one till they drop in price, to me, even if i had the cash in excess i still wouldnt spend it on a console, especially when i have a 360 and everyone knows thats all you need.

I was going to wait until the end of the year, but my 2nd 'replacement' 360 broke 2 weeks out of warranty. So that's that.

PS3 is a videogame console with great potential but no worthwhile games. I put its present value at about $500 less than it currently retails for and it's exclusive titles imo are all second-rate. My advice is to either wait until there's something worth playing on the thing, buy one of the cheaper consoles or stick to PC.

If I knew without a fact that at the end of the year (or before) it would become cheaper then I would probably wait...but I doubt it will become much cheaper so there's no point waiting.

Weren't you just crying in your other thread Tim about how you couldn't afford $200 to fix your XBox?

:P I didn't see I couldn't it, I just said I refused to pay $200 to fix it. There's a difference.

I'd wait until Christmas, even if there isn't an official price drop. The games will certainly be cheaper, and most stores will probably be offering decent bundles.

I would wait until the prices come down imo

As said previously the games out for it at the moment are pretty ordinary.

Xbox 360 seems the way to go, just hope you dont get the rare/odd lemon box

my room mate bought one with ridge racer and sonic

ridge racer is pretty fun sonic is pretty gay the graphics are only slightly better than a 360 on high def, Im pretty unimpressed at this point in time however the launch titles all suck. If i were you i'd get a 360 or at least wait until some good games are released only on PS3 (most good games get released on both consoles anyway)

I'd rather pay $200 to fix the xbox than whatever the hell it costs to buy a ps3

Dunno if they're any good, or if they're cheaper than MS, but their website says they do 360 repairs. Might be worth checking out?

im actualy trying to decide what i should get. a ps3 or a xbox 360. no doubt the 360 right now has the better range of games but ps3 is sort of mixed bag. on 1 hand its f**king expensive and has little to no range of games, but as has been the case twice already, the games come to the PS series and are usualy phenominal (rpgs im talking about here, as thats my fav type of game) oh the decisions one makes...

the 360's range of rpgs is pretty poor atm, but so is the ps3, but microsoft have already stated they want solid rpg titles for the 360 and have gone out of there way to secure Blue Dragon, so hopefully the rpg genre will have a good run on the 360

The number of exclusive games on either console this generation are going to be much, much slimmer than before - simply because it's getting pricey to develop games so they want to try and get as much bang for their buck as possible.

The problem I see with that, is that you're going to get games that are pretty technically lackluster compared to exclusives because I'm sure they'll spend more time making the game run on both systems...instead of making it run awesomely on just that one.

As far as what to get..well, I'm biased because 2 Xbox360s died for me, so I would say get a PS3. Really though, if you LOVE RPGs, then I think your best bet would be to buy a PS3, because it's going to have more regardless of what Microsoft tries to do...simply because the PS3 sells in Japan and the Xbox360 doesn't. Most RPGs are typically made in Japan.

that's a gross exaggeration, RPGs can be many things other than Final Fantasy, I guess it's up to him whether he wants jap RPGs or Western ones, if you haven't played oblivion on PC it's there on 360 (and PS3 too) then you'll get Mass Effect, Fable 2 for your westen fix, along with "jap RPGs" in Lost Odyessey and Blue Dragon.

Well I think that since he said he loved the PS2 for RPGs then he's talking about the Japanese ones.... but who knows!

microsoft knows they suck in the jap market and are gonna be pulling big strings to get into that market which includes getting games that will sell over there, of course that doesnt mean they will be just getting rpgs that sell big over there but other titles which im frankly really excited about because they have more chance of being imported over to the west which was something that sony only ever did when they knew they would make f***loads off it.

imo sony are the money grubs and id stick clear of them and go with microsoft who whilst of course are also trying to make a buck seem like they are more willign to put there ass on the line to bring better products.

I might buy a PS3 when MGS4 comes out (if it doesn't come out on 360 that is), otherwise I'll wait and buy one when God of War 3 comes out. Hopefully by then it will have dropped in price a bit too.

As far as games I'm looking forward to though, the vast majority of them are on 360 and Wii. The only PS3 titles I'm looking forward to, I just mentioned above. And people buying into this crap about how the PS3 looks better than the 360 are just suckers. Have you actually SEEN Gears of War running on a high def tv? Its at the very least as good as anything currently on PS3, if not better.

I think it's unfair to look at a launch title for the PS3 and compare it to a 2nd Gen title for the 360. I think it's pretty naive though to think that the PS3 won't look better than the 360, it did come out a year later. That being said I think the differences are going to be minor.

my typical idea of an rpg is a final fantasy sort of deal, turn based (strategy or real time ala ff12) also happens that these types are very japanese based so yeah. the western rpgs that you seem to come across these days are generaly more in the adventure catagory for me but i still like them all the same. rpgs are generaly what i play consoles for as you just dont see turn based FF style games on the pc. id like to thank the sega master system and the super nintendo for making me a rpg nut. getting off track though. ill just have to buy both of them i guess and get me a spiffy high def tv

The Playstation 2 came out a year later than the Dreamcast as well and the Dreamcast f***ing OWNED the PS2. Soul Calibur still looks great even today and that was a launch title! Try playing some PS2 launch titles and see how long it takes before your eyes begin to bleed.

I think its pretty naieve to think just because the PS3 came later, that its better.

Yeah, that was purely because Sega had no clue when it came to marketing, and Sony marketted the everliving s*** out the PS2. Remember all the "Playstation 2 - The third place" ads that were all over tv? How many times do you remember ever seeing a Dreamcast ad on tv? I think I saw one, once. Poor Dreamcast, it deserved better, it could have been somebody, it could have been a contender!

Actually it was only a launch title for the other territories outside Japan as the Dreamcast came out on the 27th November 1998 in Japan yet the game was released on August 5, 1999.

So many developers have said that the Xbox360 is so easier to develop for, but the PS3 is a bitch. By your own admission you said that first gen PS2 games looked like arse, but you look at games like Final Fantasy X, ICO and God of War for the PS2 and they look great! Leaps and bounds above what was at launch.

If the PS3 is a bitch to develop for it stands to reason that it's going developers a little while to get some of the grunt out. Also....

I don't doubt future generations of games on the PS3 will look great, but right now its done nothing to convince me its worth $1000.

The 360 on the other hand just continues to impress me.
