me and doob just went and caught a advanced screening. fk it was good. that satisfies my warhound for a while. the obvious animation and over exaggerated characters did not detract from it at all as i thought they might.

i definitely recommend this to all, but darn it makes u wanna go out and slaughter persians. and since there are no persians now... i think they will be screening this to all the soldiers in iraq/middle east region

i doubt frank miller will have anything todo with the sequal, unless its his idea, in which case it will be awesome.

its not as if its a myth tho. this story is of actual history and these events happened. 300 (or so) spartans held them at the pass in thermopalaye for a few days, just enuf time so the greeks got their s*** together to fight em off at the battle of platea (end of 300).

so if there was a sequel, it'd just be the next battle, or maybe the aftermath or maybe even a prequel at the battle of marathon.

i got no probs with sequels if they are reciting historic happenings.

no thats not what i was saying.

what im saying is that if its a cash in sequal brought out by hollywood and frank miller has nothing todo with it then it will suck, but if its his idea and hes working on it then it will be awesome.

Well it wasn't just 300 spartans, but what they did was still impressive.

I have to wonder if they'll introduce Thermisticles in the sequel, if they're doing what happens after the battle it'll be hard not to. It was surprising that he wasn't in the film at all.

Given the success of this film, the sequel will probably do just as good, even if it's s***. It's a never ending story, they have plenty of battles go over (Plataea, Mycale, Sestos), then there's all the s*** with Macedon and eventually Alexander the Great.

It was 7,000 greeks. A large number of which were prisoners (Thebe prisoners IIRC? or maybe that was the Persian prisoners I forget).
1k or so of the original 7k survived, they killed approximately 2k.

Xerxes actually sent alot of his recently conquered lands' military/citizens to fight the greeks, so it was basically a massacre.
Greeks made xerxes bleed (but did not kill) which proved that xerxes was not in fact a god (As they often did establish themselves as gods).

All in all in the end in the very end, the greek's got smashed.
They were beaten because, the greeks always had their guardsmen on the right side of the phalanx - these were usually the stronger, better equiped and more experienced.
Forget who it was basicalyl made an insanely deep phalanx, threw it at the greek's 'strong' side which overwhelmed it, literally 'turned' the greek Phalanx and then they got flanked (as Phalanx vs. Phalanx matches were often pushing contests - usually drifting to the right because of the shield covering the left man so people would huddle closer together), decisively lost that fight.

Or something to that effect anyways, im sure you could find more accurate description of what really happened somewhere.

in history they didnt get to xerxes like that

they made a V formation, with leonidas at the front and charged at xerxes's entourage but were shot down before they got there.

That "V" is a Phalanx and the spear s*** is not "hollywood" as such, the "push back and stab" was yea.
But the greeks did use spears... alot, the spartans were hoplites which were for all intents and purposes 'short' spearmen that carried swords (the greeks actually lost alot of cavalry to persian arrow showers while retreating - the corpses of horses and its rider would then caused 'breaks' in the phalanx and weak spots - not specific to thermopylae there just one particular battle).

And of course, throughout history different phalanx's used spears that was were so long (More like really long lances), that the third or fourth man deep in the phalanx's spear would actually be in front of the front line.
Which created a staggered effect of spear heads so in short, there was always a spear head to find contact with the enemy.
Both phalanx's would charge at each oter and become involved in a literal pushing match (whereby generally the larger/deeper phalanx would win), generally, whomever broke the front-line first and created a hole would lose.

Which is why the Spartans were formidable, because they were raised to know no fear and not retreat, and a phalanx's weak spot pretty much was it's own front line and own men.
Some other armies actually had straps on the backs of their shoulders such that the guy behind them could hold onto the strap and pull them back into line or push them forward to maintain proper formation and create no gaps.

Alexander the Great and other leaders were people who realised there was more to a fight than just push and shove.

Greeks actually got quite f***ed up throughout history despite having a very strong military.

But yeah, specific names of battles and some leaders/their fights elude me in pieceing them together.
Just always had an interest (not enough to 'study' so I could be wrong on points) in Achaemenid Empire, Laconia/Greek and general sword and shield over guns. ^_^

Saw it last night, loved it, beautifully done.

And everyone should stop getting so caught up in the 'historical acurateness' of the whole thing. The makers obviously didnt, otherwise Xerxes wouldnt have been 8 feet tall, and there wouldnt have been masses of freaks in on the action.

Nobody was caught up in the historical acurateness.
The movie wasn't meant to be historically acurate der, was just some information on how things really happened for pure interests sake.

For the people that actually haven't seen the movie, casa's spoiler is a real spoiler, but i'm guessing if you dont take those spoiler tags seriously anymore and you've just read my post now then it's too late.

Spoiler:
SO SUCK s***!

Either way, the sequel can take off with the entire greek army going to war to wipe out the persians, which wouldn't leave for much of an anticipated ending anyway, but then you'd be able to see greeks enslaving persians and raping their women, much like what the persians were threatning the greeks of doing.

I thought it was s***house. They could have made an (even semi) historically accurate movie and had an awesome story along with great action scenes. Instead they massacred it to satisfy the usual hollywood bs. I like mindless action as much as the next guy, but it could have been so much better :/

wtf are you all on about being historical. Isn't this based off Frank Miller's Graphic novel/Story? Sure some parts are historical, but the graphic novel would take liberties which were then translated to film....

or am I wrong?

you have to keep in mind that its a comic book conversion, the comic was epic and fantasy mixed with history. its like those stupid ww2 movies set in ww2 about super soldiers and s***. any prior research into the moive would of told you it had a fantasy element at which point you should of set proper expectations before walking into the cinema.

I'm not in the habit of doing 'prior research' into movies I go see, as I like to go and see them and enjoy/not enjoy them based on their own merits and not have expectations. I didn't like it regardless of what subject matter it was based on, although it's pretty obvious I wouldn't like the comic book either then ;)

with regard to the rape of leonidas' wife... typical hollywood simplified justification. the bad guys have to be all bad & rape & kill with impunity. good guys (like leonidas' wife) have to have justification before they kill someone... even a bad guy! yah, it's cliche & stupid but there ya go.
