that's just the default name given to it by grub ( boot loader ). I can change it in the boot.lst file if I could be arsed.

Nah it's not restricted to just Dell but it's a damn sexy laptop, combined with triple booting *nix and OSX it makes fricken awesome.

I'm not sure I understand this thread.
Are we noting that the 1210 looks good or that stinky managed to multi-boot an x86 box like half a million other people have in the past? I see no discussion of the technical merits nor an actual review of the XPS1210. I'd like a review as I'm eyeing the laptop for an upcoming purchase. last edited by parabol at 17:40:32 30/Mar/07 |

How much money does your family have slinky (crap spelling one)? First a rich car and now an expensive laptop with three OSs. Maybe your family should invest some of that money in getting you some lessons on being humble.

I love my XPS, so I figured Id watch Stinky swear like a sailor first before I tried to load OSX :P
I think the point is, on a standard x86 system, you can load Windows, Linux and OSX, so why get a mac now? :P Also, from the short period I clicked around, OSX ran pretty f***ing sweet, which isnt that surprising since all the Macs are intel based CPUs |

My current res is 1280x800 which is max and native.
The whole tailored hardware to OS is a little flawed. Sure they only use particular hardware which allows them to optimise the OS, but youll find that the majority of mac parts are in a lot of other laptops. I wouldnt expect that they have that much of an edge anymore. One reason I would be a Mac is because they have so much s***, like magnetic charging, wireless N and a few other nice features. Unfortunatly their price is quite a bit more than something like a dell, hence why I went dell. They have a place, but a lot of the old arguments are dying. |

For me, its my first 12", and I will never go bigger ever again. yeah my mate got some 17" widescreen laptop I'm like wtf man it's too big to carry why not just buy a desktop it would have been cheaper but he's like nah it's cool. Now he's complaining about how big and heavy and awkward to carry it is :) |

yer, a mate of mine has some rediculous 17" widescreen jobby
it probably weighs as much as a desktop and has this massive waste of space beneath the keyboard, just a big chunk of plastic so inefficient! |

Also, don't be such a wuss. 12" is small, and big > small. Always. Always? Don't be so naive. Not everyone has the same priorities as you. Uni students are generally more inclined to buy a smaller laptop to make it easier to transport around on a daily basis. The majority of screens I've seen at uni are 14" and 15", with the 12" ones gaining popularity. I've only ever seen one student carrying around a 17" and it doesn't look like he enjoys that extra weight/size at all. If one is after a complete desktop replacement that can play Oblivion at high-res, then obviously the priorities are different again, so it's silly for you to claim that one-size-fits-all! last edited by parabol at 12:31:41 31/Mar/07 |

Wait what? Yes, the band. They played at the tiv last night, f***ing went off as well. ^^ he wasn't talking about laptops, he was talking about his love for something else. You love me too much whoop Also, don't be such a wuss. 12" is small, and big > small. Always. Lets see how long you can hold your 17" monster with one hand standing in front of a server rack. If you want a desktop, get a desktop. For me, the 12" is what a laptop is really meant to be, small and portable. I get home, I plug it into a 20" LCD and a usb hub that has my camera, kb, mouse, phone etc and it becomes my desktop. Thats just me tho. |

May be an obvious question but - When you plug a laptop into an external screen, can you close up the laptop like you're going to transport it (obviously with it still on), or does the screen need to be open still?
I just thought the laptop might shut down automatically when you the close screen. last edited by mission at 18:34:47 31/Mar/07 |

No, I have my laptop setup to do nothing on closing the screen, and vista (and even xp to a less extent) is smart enough to know what your doing and puts it too the native res that my external LCD is.
Vista does it a little better but XP does it without having to change settings as well. |

My laptop does not hibernate when you close the screen, but mostly due to the fact that the little thing that presses down to hibernate fell out.
