howdy.
I moved down to Penrith a few weeks ago for a job i got at the Richmond RAAF base, and I'm looking for a good phone plan - cheap std calls to family and friends in bris etc.... (just moved to a place in richmond a few days ago) When i was in Brisbane I had adsl2 with iinet, so i was forced to bundle their gay phone deal to get max speeds. but there's no adsl2 here, so i don't need to go in for any of that silliness. can anyone please point me in the direction of some sort of comparison of phone deals, rates etc - similar to like a whirlpool type comparison thingy but for phone plans..? or does anyone have any good suggestions? I haven't ever looked at a voip option - what's the go whith that and is it easy...? cheers :) |

Budget homeline with Telstra (< $20/mth), a decent ISP and then use VoIP for your calls. I'd recommend aaNet for ISP since that's who I'm with and they are pretty darn good.

semi-decent adsl 1 + a Skype compatible handset/mobile phone/pda/laptop/whatever.
you'd be mad not to go Skype for interstate/international phone convos these days, especially if you can get your family organised to install it on their home pc so you can talk to them for free. this brings about a new problem though: if it costs f-all to talk to your family/friends then you can't use the excuse 'it costs too much to ring you' when you simply wish to ignore them for a few years. I notice Asus have a wifi Skype handset for ~$100... the netgear looks awesome, but for the price (~$400) I'd sooner go a smei-decent pda-phone with Skype already loaded into it from the factory. It's interesting to see that all Asus notebooks now come with Skype pre-installed and set to go. Gee - that only took 5 years longer than it should have last edited by koopz at 01:46:04 25/Mar/07 |

Skype is to proprietary for my likings. Go for a real voip phone or a Linksys PAP2T if you already have a cordless phone. If your going to get adsl and also have a landline get a Linksys - Sipura SPA-3000. That way you can make out going calls via voip and still receive calls on your landline on the same phone. If your interested in skype, use in on your computer with a cheap headset.

Budget homeline with Telstra (< $20/mth), a decent ISP and then use VoIP for your calls I heard that you can't now sign up for budget homeline if you have a different ADSL provider. |

When i was in Brisbane I had adsl2 with iinet, so i was forced to bundle their gay phone deal to get max speeds. No you didn't have to bundle it with their landline, you could have just bundled it with their $9.95 p/month voip service which is way cheaper than any land line plan and especially cheap for STD and intl calls.. It is what I got. But obviously you need to have a landline, so therefor I have Telstra land line on cheapest plan, 20 bux a month or something and use it for incoming calls and my cheap voip for outgoing calls. Saves lots of money. |
