Well, I've finally got authorisation for a Wii purchase! All I had to do to stop wifey frowning about it was pay off one of the car loans first, heh...
So, what do you guys recommend? I will probably pick up Zelda + something else when I buy it. A good multiplayer game for parties etc would be awesome. I have NFI what peripherals etc I need. Is the 3rd party component cable worth it - will it improve picture quality on my 720p LCD TV? What extra controllers do I need, nunchucks etc? |

Meh, you married scoobs? Was a bit of a (prolly weak) joke, but still I don't go out and spend 600+ without coming to an agreement with my wife about it. She doesn't make as much as I do but its still her money too.
Another Q: if you could get one console, would you get a Wii or a X360? I'm assuming that PS2 is too old to worry about now, and I am not forking out a grand plus to sony for a PS3. |

If you're looking for a good party game Hog, check out Warioware. It's pretty fun (particularly after you and your mates have had a few) but some people might find it a bit too random.
Of course - Wii Sports is the ultimate for party games atm. If you're going to pick up another wiimote I'd also grab Wii Play just for the shooting game. |

Wario Ware: Smooth Moves!
Excite Truck you'll either love or hate, buy it at EB so you can trade it within 7 days if it's not your thing. Don't bother with Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz or Rayman: Raving Rabbids. |

Zelda of course, loved Ocarina and I'm sure I'll like this one :) |

Zelda is so f***ing overrated. I'd get a game that you can play either multi or single.. Zelda is boring as (but I've never played a Zelda before so I guess it could be different if you're already a fanboi).
I was going to get Wario, but I heard that in multiplayer you don't actually play at the same time? Is that true?!? One of my mates reckoned Rayman was the best multiplayer (including Sports), and I have it here but haven't played it yet. |

Zelda is so f***ing overrated. You're overrated. I would get warioware, Elebits or Eledees or whatever it is over here should be out within the next week or two and that's supposed to be pretty funky. |

I'm hanging out for The Godfather : Blackhand (which comes out tomorrow).
I tried to duck into an EB on the way home from work this afternoon, but they were already closed preparing for the PS3 midnight launch tonight :( |

Billy is right, Zelda is overrated. I played it for a few days and then just, well, realised it was kinda crap. NFS Carbon City lasted no longer than a nights play. The only game I continually play is Wiisports and will probably keep going that way until Mortal Kombat comes out.

Hrm, six to one really - I think the Wii is great for parties or when people come around but I don't enjoy sitting down and playing it for more than 30 minutes by myself.

Happened with the Xbox360 too, I can remember not having anything good to buy after launch until Dead Rising came out. |

For choice it really depends what kind of experience you're after. I'd recommend Wii if you and the people playing it are more casual gamers, it's accessible for newcomers and has a big party game focus.
If the people playing it are more hardcore gamers, then go with the 360. It has a lot more games with substance for those with a decent grip on games and online multiplayer that's only rivaled by PC. PS3 might get there, but at launch it's just not worth the extra $. If you don't really care about graphics and just want s***loads of games, go PS2. They're still making games for it (some really good ones IMO) and there is a massive library of titles you can pick up for next to nothing second hand as well as plenty of party games like the singstars and guitar heros. |

The wii comes with a great party game anyway. Get Zelda. Get WiiPlay (for the 2nd mote). Play wiisports with your misses and to show it off. Get something else later.

Another Q: if you could get one console, would you get a Wii or a X360? I'd get both :P But if I had to choose one right now, I'd probably say the 360, just because it has a much, much larger library of games to choose from while the Wii is still pretty starved for good titles. |

Wii60 is the way to go. You continue to get the great franchises and familiar games, but also Nintendo's gems. Zelda is a hardcore gamer's game but it is still pretty accessible and if you don't like that, you must be a pretty casual player. It is one of the best Action Adventure RPG series out there, if you like them of course.
Sadly most of the Wii's big games for me (like always) are Nintendo's and are often delayed, I'm only really looking out for Super Paper Mario, Metroid Prime 3, Mario Galaxy and SSBB. Other efforts like Battallion Wars II also look pretty promising. You buy a Nintendo console for their 1st party games, and the whole industry is becoming more like this now than ever, as PS3 is losing a LOT of its exclusives to the 360 now. DMC4 being one just the other day. Capcom will go where the money is and they've shown a ton of support for the 360. Don't think MGS4 will remain solely on PS3 forever too. Anyway, back on topic, I'd definitely get the Component cable if you have an LCD HDTV. Looks so much nice and crisper :) last edited by partyhat at 10:52:04 23/Mar/07 last edited by partyhat at 10:55:20 23/Mar/07 |

I hear you Khel, but I'm pretty sucked into the whole partygame Wiimote thing. I'm not likely to purchase more than 4-5 games in the lifetime of the system anyway, so if there are 5 good ones that I can get in the next year I'll be happy.
I don't see myself playing a lot of single player titles; Zelda will keep me occupied for a while. Anyone have info on how the back-catalog thing works? You can download previous games from previous Nintendo consoles like the 'Cube etc yeh? Will the Wii play 'Cube games? |

Yerp - you need a "Classic Controller" to play most of the old stuff which you can find for about $25-30. Just go online, top up your accounts with credits and then go ahead and download whatever game you want.
The novelty wore off pretty soon for me though since the selection in AU is s***. |

Well I got Call of Duty 3 which was OK as a single player (rate it way higher than Zelda, except for the chunkiness that happens now and then). AND, you could finish COD3 in less than 7 days, take it back and THEN get Zelda. But I guarantee you, Zelda will be boring by comparison (in terms of action).

If you're after party games, then definitely hands down go the Wii. You can't download Gamecube games, but the Wii reads Gamecube discs so you can just chuck em in and play them. The back catalogue stuff is NES, SNES, N64, Mega Drive and some other bits and pieces. You gotta buy Wii points in the online store and use those to buy the games, but they can end up costing anywhere from $5 to $15, so sometimes its not worth it. Theres also not a massive selection available yet, but they release a couple more every week.
Edit: Oh, and I guess its worth mentioning, if you want to play gamecube games you need a Gamecube controller and a Gamecube memory card too. last edited by Khel at 12:29:21 23/Mar/07 |

From talking to mates and other random people the general thoughts people have are thus:
PS3 Lots and lots Grunt. $1000 is still too much. Almost all said they would not get one or wait for the price to come down to $700ish. Xbox360: Easily the best selection of games, a little bit too expensive, however the choice of games seems to make up for it. Wii: best console for party games and for something differnt. The price also makes it a bit more attractive. Not enough games for it however. PC: Same old, same old. |

smooth moves is pretty cool
But there are no games for the wii at the moment, tennis is about the only good one and that's got a limited appeal (ie you can only play atari 2600 combat so many times). Mortal Kombat sounds decent... waiting |

Yeah, my Wii is collecting dust atm. Zelda was the awesomest f***in' game in ages, but I'm an existing Link fanboy, so I think you should TBYB. Some of my other non-fanboy friends just couldn't get into it, and just gave up at the second dungeon.
NFS: Carbon is crap, I only finished like 2 races and NEVER PLAYED AGAIN. Be warned, WarioWare is "pass the control" multiplayer, which does put off some people (me included, a little). Also be warned, Wii Play is pretty boring after you've played all the games and can kick all your friends asses. I'm just waiting for the drought to be over at the end of the year, and score me some Super Mario Galaxies, Metroid Prime 3, Trauma Centre and a few others. last edited by N-Dude at 18:02:11 23/Mar/07 |

Brawl! everyone must buy brawl. I want some low ping peeps to beat (me).
Yes, atm the line up is lack luster. All the big titles are scheduled for a release a year after launch. Which is very poor planning. It seems all consoles have suffered from this. The 360 had a long drought of A+ exclusive titles for a little under a year. And gaystation looks to suffer the worst, losing all it's exclusives to 360. Many of the games being released for the wii at this stage are just unfinished previous gen projects or previous gen ports with poor motion sensing tacked on. Look at farcry, medel of honour and blazing angles. All previous gen ports with sloppy controls and graphics worse then their xbox originals. a shameful money grab |

Great big essay follows. Short version: I love my Wii. Its very good but surprisingly expensive once I bought everything I needed for a party machine. I see why people complained about the gfx, but I think that the new gameplay elements makes up for it.
Bought it yesterday and took the afternoon off work, a few friends & family helped to break it in. I was gonna post from the Wii but without a keyboard its too painful to do more than a couple of lines. Hopefully if they are serious about the whole Internet Channel thing someone will make a Wii-keyboard. Also the text even with component cables is bollocks - they need a way to increase text SIZE (like CTRL++ in Firefox) not just zoom in! But that aside it IS a games console innnit not an internet portal :D I had done SOME reading on the controls etc which was what swayed me to the Wii and I wasn't let down. Wii sports and the like are awesome and we had a lot of fun - wifey is gonna see if she can find a second nunchuck for me today while shopping. The Wii does a good job at making the game play in Sports intuitive but its unfortunately not perfect. There's still a fair bit of learning how to make the machine do what you want through the controller - this is most apparent in boxing; you need to get your head around the fact that the gloves do canned moves and you can't just flail about. The lack of classic console controllers seems to make the unit more appealing to non-gamers. My non-gamer mother-in-law kicked my arse at Bowling this morning :( f*** the Wiimotes and the component cabling is exxy tho. I only bought ONE extra game (Zelda) and I spent nearly twice the console price by the time I had 4 controls, Wii Play and cabling. I started considering a PS3 when I saw my Wii price tag but its still a big difference, I'd prolly spend 12-1300 setting up a PS3. Between sports, WiiPlay and Zelda I have enough s*** to do, I reallyu wanted to get another game but :p The bad: The screen resolution available to the Wii is quite simply dongs, given that it was released in an era where 720p should almost be considered the base. This has been the big disappointment from the Wii for me but I'm getting over it. Zelda would have looked so much f***ing better in 720p :( I guess Nintendo listened to all of us who screamed that gameplay had been sacrificed for gfx for too long, and sacrificed some gfx for all the swanky new gameplay. They probably couldn't have packed the extra horsepower into it and kept the unit as relatively cheap as it is. Also the available system memory seems small. Anyone know if this is expandable? last edited by Hogfather at 16:11:21 24/Mar/07 |

I made the same mistake though, $50 or whatever for cables and then I checked eBay. |

Heaps of awesome execution moves using the Wii control system on top of a standard GTA style game. :D |
