Hey guys, I need to block MSN through a WGR614 Netgear Router.

Does anyone know what ports (Its a range I believe) I need to block, or the best way to go about it ?

TIA

Man that was helpful

I am more worried about the fact that if you block 1863 etc it tries through 80

Hotmail/MSN/Live is very very difficult to block, even if you block the client, you can get around it via web clients, TOR etc etc etc

Does the router allow you to block http via content type? if so :

I believe messenger live also now has a way to go through 80 if it cant go through its normal ports.

I would have just set them up their own user account and block that user from installing stuff. Put a password on yours and hopefully that would stop them. Or did I miss the point?

Sure that will work, up to the part when you do want them able to use messenger on the weekends say and want to flick on and off access as appropriate.

Mind you Obes has a point, nothing to stop them using a web client or whatever TOR is?

yeah, blocking by ports is pointless, its just uses port 80, only way is to block the addresses it goes to, havent got the list handy, but if you google, you can find the url's it goes to, there are quite a few it tries, and then block them.

But after all of that, they could just use a web based client and it will work, but i spose you could block that url aswell, but there are heaps of them.

There is a program that kills any window that has a particular phrase in its "title". You could set it up to kill any window (note. window not process) that had Messenger or MSN in its "title".

you could try threatening them with a backhander if they use msn when they shoudlnt be?

Rename msnmsgr.exe when you want them to do homework - rename back when homework is done.

Yeah theres no point, you can access meebo from anywhere, all you need it a web browser and can login to your msn account.

The WGR614 pretty much sucks for anything, I'd have to go with the surprise checks and beating of children approach.

threatening them with a backhand is much more productive than trying to block all the ports.

just remember they have to belive you will give it to them. ;)

Belief isn't hard to achieve after a few lightning raids to catch them out and some loving physical violence to put the fear of god into them.

Make your children fear and respect you!

The kids are already bruised, and the teachers are getting suspicious

Blocking ports 1863, 6891 - 6901, and messenger.hotmail.com stopped MSN working. Just have to keep an eye on the web based clients and block them as I come across them..
There's what meebo, iloveim, what else?

Or maybe start using phonebooks or something

Well I have a list of 118 web based IM clients.
And 3426 urls that are for web based/cgi proxies that will let you get around any of those blocks.

And both lists grow regularly to the point where we have kind of given up.

And beyond that are several other methods... that I won't go into because the students where I work are yet to work them out. (yet)

Either group policies or at highschool we had this program called handsoff that would let you block certain apps.

You could grab Astaro and install the personal home edition. It has the ability to block MSN (Yahoo/ICQ/AIM/Jabber/etc) whether it's web based or client based. It can also do policy based blocking, so it's blocked between 3.30pm and 8pm but open after that, etc.

Stopping apps from running isn't all that successful. Workers don't have the time to find a way round it, kids most definately do.
