I was thinking something along those lines, but if a laptop doesn't have a USB connector, what is the chances of it having a PCMCIA slot?

ill have to at least try and find out, because its coming from her dad who lives in Sydney, and i'm pretty sure she won't remember "does it have a PCMCIA slot", and thats even if he knows what a PCMCIA slot is.

nerr, 386/486/pentium 1+ laptops have pcmcia ports

like $40 for a usb to pcmcia adapter (probably type II, sometimes called pc-card or cardbus instead of pcmcia)

serial to usb connectors or anything?

Regular serial interfaces aren't fast enough to support USB signaling speeds.

PCMCIA was around well before USB. PC Card came around after USB, and nowadays we have Expresscard/34 and Expresscard/54.
