Before I start a search for stores (online or not), I thought I would ask here incase any QGL folks own any bows... perhaps there's some reputable stores around Brisbane.

Thanks in advance.

Should ask her where she got it from.

I just want a traditional english longbow... I know they're very outdated, especially in accuracy compared to newer composite bows and such... but meh :)

i'd try some archery clubs... they usually know about this sort of thing ;) if yur on the northside there is the grange bowmen at bridgeman downs. i've often thought of joining up for a bit of archery :D i used to be in the narangba bowmen when i was a teen & the dude that ran that would definely know where to get an old longbow as he was a crazy old pom that had 100s of bows & crossbows :P

Hah sif.

I wouldn't even think people in Australia are nerdy enough to do that kind of thing.

Thanks demon... since I'll be needing a range and some instruction it makes sense to knock everything over in one swoop.

If you want a traditional English longbow, I know a couple of guys who make/import them. They are of awesome quality (the Medieval re-enactment groups love them) , and IIRC they are not too expensive. They will also be able to tell you of licensing laws that apply, if any.

PM me if you're interested.

I figured as much... shouldn't be too hard to obtain, seeing as they allow me to own a bunch of rifles and shotguns.

Silly laws though so you never know, I can own a shotgun but can't own specific types of knives or martial arts weapons :S

I use to shoot down at Eagle Archery in Woodridge and never needed a licence, although to hunt with a bow I know you do need one.

History Alive is on the 9th and 10th of June. It's similar to the Abbey except it isn't just crusader periods, it also has greek, roman, dark ages, musketeers, napoleonic, civil war, wwi, wwii and Vietnam groups.

Again, CHUB, if you're interested I know a couple of the guys who can provide you with what you want.

do you really need a licence for a bow & arrows? i know a while back the qld govt passed a law about licences for crossbows after some rockhampton kid went berko with one... but i've never heard of a licence for a bow before. i've got an old 55lb recurve & all the gear... still got my full set of 8 target arrows! but i've never had a licence for it :/
i've been bow hunting before too & although it was on private property there was never any mention from anyone about licencing. my whole club went ... about 25ppl. although that was a while ago i spose.

[edit] personally if you are wanting to buy a bow to actually do archery & not as an ornament or something... i'd get a solid fibreglass recurve bow. they are sturdy, weather resistant, cheap & hold thier pull much longer than wooden bows.

Isn't it only owned when it has some sort of cutting effect on the poster?

But if you want to make fun of getting geared up in armour and belting six shades of s*** out of each other with martial weapons, then go right ahead. I am a member of a living history group, but I'm only interested in the combat arts - and drinking copious amounts of alcohol.

Sorry, I thought the context was within the QGL forums. Anybody who knows you within that context isn’t going to believe that you listen to anybody else. As an extension to this, the only things that it appears you listen to are sentiments that meet your criteria for an argument.

I due to the fact my hearing works I general listen even when I don't want to!

Hearing something, and listening to something are slightly different. Listening requires some sort of attentiveness.

Listening isn’t the Obes MO, your MO is more akin of constantly vomiting up bitter comments about things that happened years ago or ranting about your own fears and misconceptions like they are commandments sent by God. People complain about my stubbornness in a debate, but Jesus, your arguments are the worst. At least Hunter had the brains to realise that his argument may be have been constructed in bulls***, and would change tactics … eventually.

But shad tells me has pics of you in some glow in the dark bike pants and an overcoat.

Yet another example of bringing up baseless arguments that are nothing more than a manifestation of your own fears.

Why don’t you start telling us how pointless and useless university study is? You know the one where you are doing a degree that you don’t really want to do because you think it a sound investment, and you bag the living s*** out of anybody who is trying to follow their passions at University? That’s my favourite.

The thing that makes it my favourite is how you always manage to draw up little chunks of s*** from years ago, sometimes more than a decade ago and often not directly related to the argument at all, in an attempt to validate your point that everybody should be as bitter and sad at life as you are.

Your stories are the same kind of therapy as watching Judge Judy, or Jerry Springer. Every time I read one of your sad bitter stories, I sit back and say “Man, I’m glad I’m not like Obes.”. It always cheers me up.

Uni is not a waste of time. But not everyone has to go to uni. You do not need uni to validate your life or self value. In fact having a degree is worth nothing if your idea of work ethic is running your sick leave to the edge and turning up a few hours late to work everyday. And hell a uni degree doesn't actually prove you are intelligent, or hard working, or anything other then you are capable of passing a degree at uni. But hey, don't believe me...

You can get a masters from CSU these days based on experience with out having done an undergraduate degree. ie. the very institutions that award these qualifications are saying their are equally valid alternatives. Not to mention we as a country need a heap of people to do jobs that simply don't require degrees.

The rest of your response was angry typo biting on the bait. I was hoping to bait you with the LARPer lightning bolts, but I'll take whatever works. You sure do take this glow bowling seriously.

ps. keep biting chub.

But hey, don't believe me...

No, no, no. I don’t mean for you to recite my arguments to me. I already know them. I mean those stupid arguments that should have only been shown on a reality TV show.

You know the ones where you’d make posts like “I’m a sad and bitter man who hates my job but I’m only going to University because bean counters like degrees”

Inevitably you’d then get onto pointless things that were nowhere near the subject of universities like “khel was a s***ty housemate and I’m still sad and bitter about it”

ie. the very institutions that award these qualifications are saying their are equally valid alternatives.

The essence is right. There are valid alternatives to learning information that will serve you in a career. I’ve never stated that everybody should go to University, ever.

However, The vast majority of Masters by coursework courses are designed for people who have no interest in study and just want to go up a pay grade. Universities are saying “if you’re dumb enough to give us s*** loads of money, we’ll accept you”. Those Masters courses qualify students who are often more useless than a useless undergraduate student because of their crappy subject selection. I should know, I’ve had to tutor dozens of them.

There are some exceptions, post graduate courses designed for professionals. These courses start at a very advanced level and move up from there. You actually require years of training in a field before you have a chance of passing. Depending on the quality of University you go to, they require that you’ve worked for 5-10 years in a relevant field to be about equal to an undergraduate with no work experience. Note, that entry positions quite often don’t qualify as relevant fields.

Also, according to exit surveys the people who get the most out of a Masters by coursework degree are people who enter the Masters program who already have both an undergraduate in something and plenty of experience in the subject matter of the program.

no interest in study

While I understand the people enjoy the past time of study (learning) for studies (learnings) sake. And learning is a fine hobby. And we do need thinkers, but uni's are these days about making people job ready.

You have also made it quite plain that unless someone has gone to uni (your uni) and got your result or better you believe you are superior then them based on a piece of paper.

What's the point of spending 10 years getting a PhD in the multiple states of infinite only to find out you have to go back and do a Bachelor in something_that_will_get_you_employed.

And if you are trying to argue the statements I made to khel about they value of the degree I did. Let me say that the coursework I did in my undergrad was mostly pointless, and not required for the work I do, that is not to say some of it was not interesting, and some of it was valuable. But I know I will never use JSP, Modula2, assembly or a million other things (heck one lecturer in 96 tried to tell a room full of part time IT students all wearing various corporate uniforms and obviously networking professionals that IPv4 would be dead with 5 years). The only thing I got from doing that degree was a tick on a criteria sheet for a pay rise, and any job I did apply for was going to be far more interested in professional certs/training and the years of experience as compared to a degree.
