Folks' pc need a new m/board, running a P4 2.8. Don't need anything fancy.

Currently looks like there's only 2 left on the market:

ASRock P4i65GV Socket 478 DDR400 All in One

MSI PM8M-V 478 uATX DDR400

Any opinions on either? Both around $70...

Or if anyone has a socket 478 m/board lying around that they want to get rid of, please let me know :)

the asrocks have been around for like 2 years now... not bad boards

i seem to remember an incompatibility with these boards and Radeon 9600s...

or something like that.. i can't remember tho, been too long. Very low return rate on the asrocks.

Never used the MSI though.

I have a few brand new Asus P4S800-MX SE's left but I won't part with them for much less than $150

wow, even i surprise myself sometimes.

i can't remember what i had for dinner two nights ago, but i can tell you that those boards don't like 9600's usually.

weird. only built like 30 or 40 pc's with those boards, 2-3 years ago.

the P4S800-MX is the motherboard that made Asus look bad.

I hate them f***ers. If i had a dollar for every time i sent one of those off for RA, i'd have enough to fuel koops' car for a month.

any slight sign of a dodgy PSU or electrical unbalance, and them things blow

nearly every other Asus board will live through nearly anything, i know my 4 year old A7N8X has/did/is.

Oh I should add, it's pretty much the only board left in aus u can get, and only one online shop had them left in stock. So didn't really have a choice anyway!

yeah you did...

no socket 478 mobo comes with a decent warranty anymore mate. they aren't made anymore.

personally - I'd go thru these guys

you are after a 478 board - it's gonna fail when you least need it to. At least have the sense to go thru blokes who succeed making their living on their good name alone

it's worth mentioning - the ad above are people who played a part in building Computer Alliance into what is it today. They are missed I can tell ya.

Hope this helps

For the record the SE boards are fine.... But I agree that the First edition of the P4S800-MX were the worst board asus ever made.

heh, my old P4G8X Deluxe (Intel E7205 Granite Bay) is still going strong (much to my surprise)
Makes for a pretty decent spare games rig despite having only a 533 bus)
