So my aunty is opening a hairdressing salon and wants my brother to design a website for her, and he's got no idea where to host it etc..

can anyone recommend a decent .au host?

I haven't hosted anything in .au in so long, i'd recomend a US based host, but her salon will be on the central cost of NSW and well, they don't have a huuuuge uptake in broadband, don't want potential customers getting the s***s coz the website takes too long to resolve from their s***ty dial up etc

thanks

I don't think having the site in AU will speed up the web site loading for dial up users. Design the site to cater for lower speed clients and it'll be fine whether it's hosted here or in the US.

Check out Whingepool's coding & web forum, they have a sticky on AU hosts and feedback on the more dodgy ones can be found by doing a search.

Okay, are you telling us that your services are availible, or that you got it cheaper then the hosting you could buy here?

parody tell me more, who is it with, got a test file?

Since I am over this side of the world, I'd be tempted to use them for my hosting stuff, if the price was right :)

Harddisk: 1 x 160GB
Bus: SATA
Rackspace: 1U
OS: Linux or BSD
Switch port: 100Mbps (FE)
Billing cycle: 1 month
SLA: -
Datatraffic: Volume 2000GB
Setup fee: € 50.00
Initial term: 3 months
Included:
APC Remote Reboot (1 port)
IP (2)
Plesk PSA / 300

its hosted via leaseweb.com

[parody@badmin ~]$ w
00:59:29 up 101 days, 13:38, 3 users, load average: 0.08, 0.07, 0.06

have yet to have any form of known outage... its peered via about 8 Gigabit or better links.. in basic.. i've done hosting for years and this is one of the nicest boxes i've hosted on since i stopped colocating my own hardware.

the downside for admin'ing a box like this is the host will reboot it and thats about it.. anything else they charge a fortune in full hour blocks.

i've now got 4 IP's on it..

I have found http://www.jumbahosting.com.au/ to be excellent. I pay $10 a month for a gig of space which is based in melbourne and mirrored in the US.

Excellent uptime and awesome support.

who do ausgamers use? It was webcentral www.webcentral.com.au. I use them for a few clients and they are very stable and offer a good service.

Webcentral is great for an australian host but you'll be paying for it.

Dreamhost is quite good for what it is (and fits with what you'd be looking for) and cheapish too (esp compared with aus hosting)

The notice between australian and US hosting on dialup shouldn't be a problem in the least, 80% of the time its going to take to load is gonna be from how its built.

I've been using XHost for about 6 months now and they've been okay. Linux servers though, not BSD, and old versions of PHP which I'm not too happy about.

But these days I don't care. I'm not doing web development anymore, so long as my code continues to hum along, I couldn't care less.
