very cool pic :D i got no idea how it's been done though... i'd think the exposure time needed to catch teh fireworks & lightning would black the people on the beach out. multiple exposures & some image overlaying perhaps... anyways... look good. :D

considering theres a comet/shooting star in the pic between the fireworks and the lighting, it seems a bit arsy to get them all in there at once!

bloody good pic though

That is a kick ass pic. It looks as though it could have been taken as just one shot. I'm thinking an 8mm lens and about 30 seconds of exposure, then cropped into the landscape appearance. Most people sit reasonably still while watching fireworks so yeah, I call REAL!

I'll be in Perth in a few weeks over the weekend due to work. Since I don't know anyone that lives there, anyone have any ideas on what the f***s to do over there?

jury's still out on if its fake or not on the photography forum where i saw it, but some people who were there confirmed there was lightning + fireworks and even had some other (not as good) photos featuring both. Personally i think its most likely legit, if not then its only an overlay of 2 very well taken images. Either way its still an awesome sight to look at.

30sec way to high, its seems to me it has a low apature as the lights across the bay havent starburst at all, so i'd be thinking more like somewhere in the 2-10sec bracket depending on aparture/ISO.

Ticman, if you are a young dude wanting to get laid and have a good time, hang round the pubs and clubs at Freemantle. If you are more refined but still want to get laid take a special friend south down to the Margaret River and get some damn fine wines and awesome food into ya! and have an indulgent weekend.

My recent long exposure shots didnt have any starburst effect either. Given how much light has been captured, I'm sticking with my 30seconds estimate and very wide angle lens.

I think the shots have been created using a HDR technique. Read more here: http://www.pingmag.jp/2006/04/13/10-pictures-of-tokyo-gotham/

It's possible to get high contrast shots in a wide colour range, eg

Nope, I dont think so. If this was an HDR composite, the fireworks and cargo loading docks spot lights would not be so over exposed.

I also saw that photo and thought it looked a bit fake. I can confirm though there was lightning and fireworks on the same night. In fact, I think the local rag had a picture capturing a similar scene (though from much further back in the hills).

Just out of curiousity, does anyone have high res version of that image?

turns out the photographer has been located.

Picture was taken in about a 5 min window, with 30 second exposures (its 3 photos stitched). Apparently it took a lot of pictures to get the lightning right. It was taken with a Nikon d50.

E.T. reason for starbursting is not exposure time but apature, obviously he's run a low apature (so no starbursting) and a uber-low ISO. 30sec with that kind of light on normal night settings would def overexpose unless stopped down via apature.

As for the HDR suggestion not a chance, HDR on non-static scenes is almost impossible as the difference in areas where people have moved etc would create havoc in the final image.

Coolio
Glad I got the exposure time guessed right at least. I think with the rigth lens, you could have taken that 180 shot in one go.

I reckon that picture was taken with a colour enabled camera, and not a black and white one.

as if you wouldn't be able to figure out how to enable your big pond web space. if I can figure it out anyone can.

fyi your login name is not the same as your web space, nor is the password and you need to actually create your web space account separate

Well, at least they realised it was a collage
The above image is actually a three photograph panorama digitally processed to reduce red reflections
