To sum it all up its a hybrid electric car that you plug-in and will run for 60k's on battery only. If you need to go further a 3 cylinder flex fuel engine kicks in. Can max out at nearly 1000k's range.
The ICE only charge the battery, unlike the Prius whose engine drives the wheels and charges the battery.

^ Sorry to s*** in your shoes, but Prius plug-in conversions have been around for yrs.

My point is that you cannot buy a Prius off the showroom floor that you can 'Plug-in' and recharge. If this GM car ever gets to the showroom it will do just that.

I guessing the next gen3 Prius will be able to do that.

GM and Ford will have to put a silmilar car on the market otherwise I'm guessing they will go broke, if they arent already, particularly Ford.

That being said, i think this is interesting, as it is looking at the electric car from a different perspective. Rather than have a electric motor complement the already almost good enough petrol motor, its the other way around. The electric is the focus and the petrol motor is there to back it up.

I see this as the way of the future, except I reckon it is a step too far for the general motoring public.

Some may say the Toyota Prius is still too extreme for the general motoring public, but is starting to catch on. Hell, alot of people can't even cope with the concept of an alternate fuel like LPG or Diesel, let alone electric.

If it goes to market, I don't think it'll sell well unfortunately.

If they offer various noise options such as 'quiet and refined', 'standard', 'meaty v8 roar' and 'fooly sik headache-inducing muffla drone maaaaaaaaaate' they'll sell a lot better

the car still runs off lithium ion batteries which as we know from previous electric car threads are massively overpriced and have very short life spans

you're better off with a common rail turbo diesel

I love my wife's Prius. I'd buy one too if I didnt need my VT to tow my boat.

Not many mid sized cars in Australia you can drive 600km on $8 worth of fuel.

We were in Washington DC in February and we saw a few Prii around, went back again last month and they are everywhere now.

Believe it or not NF I actually agree with you on the Lithium Batteries and the common rail diesel systems.

I've been reading some specs on up and coming VW and Peugeot diesels and they have better fuel economy than the Prius!

I do believe however that EV's of the future will use new battery tech that is currently in development .. and a long way off. Poly-carbon and nanotube batteries could be the cheap, light-weight answer to age old battery problems. But only time will tell.
