Topic: Which 2.1 speaker system?

Yo. After some new speakers. I don't watch movies on the pc so I don't need 5.1, but I would like to be able to plug the speakers into TV/DVD etc. Can u do that with pc speakers? I've narrowed it down to 4 anyway. Now, there's over $100 difference between the cheapest and the most expensive, but I'd be happy to pay that if they're going to last the distance with noticable quality improvement, and ability to use them with the TV etc. Any thoughts? Are the soundcards u get that are built into motherboards these days good enough for these speakers? All comments appreciated. Ta.

Strongly vouch for the Z-2300, i got a set about 2 weeks ago from MSY for the same price.

The bass is insane. So is the volume, with the dial up to a quarter of the way, the room begins to shake. At half volume i can hear it through several walls from out on my driveway. It can go much louder too, distortion free (although i haven't been game enough to crank it up all the way yet. Dunno if its safe).

The speakers connect to your PC/or whatever with a 3.5mm stereo jack. They provide you with a cable which converts that to the red and white RCA plug female connectors so you can use it with a game console. I think if you wanted to connect them to your TV or DVD player, just pick up a converter from dick smiths for probably about ~$10.

These are some pics of the speakers i took a while ago.

They're actually good quality?

I got money sitting around here (because the Wii is sold out) and absolutely s*** speakers... $170 for good speakers would be a bargain.

So are they great speakers *for the price*, or are they great speakers fullstop?

A bit of both. They are EXCELLENT speakers for the price. As for fullstop - they are definitely one of the best 2.1 sets for under $300 - although you can't expect a set for this price to outclass high-end speakers.

If you are an audiophile, you may not be *entirely* satisfied. But personally I brought these for listening to music (i don't really game/watch movies on my computer), and i do enjoy good quality music, and personally i don't have a problem with these.

Mind you, like any set of decent speakers, having a sound card helps you get more out of them (i have an Audigy 2 ZS personally).

Ok guys I've been reading non-stop today on speaker research. I have come to the following conclusions.

The choice to make is between the Klipsche 2.1's and...dick smith setup for $199:

I'm leaning towards the Dicksmith. Heaps of people on OCAU recommend this.

Apparently the Logitech's have epic bass but it's muddy - so unless ur into doof doof then you'll never need their excessive bass anyway.

The Altec's are apparently made of plastic which really s***s on their sound quality - not solid enough.

From all reports, the Klipche 2.1's are awesome speakers. Just the right blend of base, range, and clarity, and solid build. Only downside is they look like ass.

Then I stumbled upon all the people on OCAU saying the DSE (dicksmith) will be even better. So I'll go scope it out.

Not sure if I need a special sound card for dicksmith ones or what...for the connection I mean...

Looking at the pic of those Dick Smith ones you would probably need a digital in.

i must have a bad batch then. because my old 2300's where awesome, untill half way (which, in reality you wouldn't listen to music higher than this) but then they start distorting really badly if you go any further. im thinking that its putting more power to the speakers, but the actual cones don't get louder, they just destort more.

maybe its just my set.

i got the 5500's now though, very pleased.

the 5300's just seem like teh 2300's + 3 extra speekers. im sure for the extra one hundred, it doesn't sound that much better.

I have Z2300's and am happy with them. For the purist listening to music they lack a mid range however the bass and trebles are fantastic. Fantastic for games, good but not great for pure SQ music. For $169 I haven't heard much better. I didn't have the need for 5.1 so stuck with 2.1 and am happy with them. 5.1 for the lounge 2.1 for the PC.

I've got some logitech ones I think they're the 2300's and they're hooked to a 10 band graphic equalizer so I can even out the sounds. Yes the bass does get excessive and I tend to turn the bass more or less all the way off on the eq to stop it from driving me insane. Trust me, after half an hour of nothing but rumble droning away inside your head no matter how much you're into bass it'll piss you off too.

Oh yeah i made a mistake in my DSE link/post. The link goes to floorstanders but apparently they're lousy (ocau). Just hunt around on the site and ull find the bookshelf speakers.

I have a set of MX5021's and they are an awesome speaker. The speakers are made with plastic, but they still sounds pretty freakin fantastic.

Since I have bought mine I have swayed around 10 other people to buy them. They crap on some of my friends stereo speakers.

If you can have a listen to them, you will not be disappointed.

So put it this way, my current speakers are nearly literally painful to listen to (2 standard comp speakers), would you strongly recommend these? I'm assuming the difference will be a big jump?

I'm nearly 100% sold on them, is umart the cheapest and best way to get them?

Alright I've decided to get them... can you pick up from Umart in person? If not, what other stores stock these that can be picked up in person?

It's just that my dad is a postie van driver and would pick them up today since he goes through like 30 suburbs... it just seems like the Umart Online you can't actually rock up in person.

Umart has a computer in store that you can place an order on. You will be waiting 10 or more minutes for the order to be picked though.

I'm definately not getting the Z-2300's. Everyone says the first 30min listening is like "wow" cos the bass is so massive. But after that it gets annoying and u can't get rid of it it's so overbearing.

I'm looking at DSE amp+bookshelves as a cheap alternative. People on OCAU reckon the dse amp is as good as $500 amps...

Yeah, you don't have a sub so it will be a huge jump.

I got mine for $168 from MSY at Morningside, they also have a store at Slacks Creek which should have them as well (www.msy.com.au).

UMart Milton's website says they are $169 to buy online or ~$175 to buy in-store.

From some people i spoke to on whirlpool and my own personal experience, it's not annoying at all. Just turn down the bass on the remote.
