Probably not exactly what you are after, but I usually just convert the AVIs to a DVD format and watch it on the player.

AVI is just a container be more specific. You can use AVI's to encase x624 or whatever it is, xvid, divx, etc. Think of an AVI as a jar, you can put jam in that jar, beer, scotch or even a turd.

My guess is you're after one that plays divx, only problem with that is I think the divx has to be device compliant before devices can play it (I remember seeing a warning on the divx encoder). My advice would be do what that other guy said, just convert the thing to dvd and play that.

Tried clive peters/harvey norman/kmart/jb/wow?

www.oppodigital.com

their dvd player owns. plays everything. picture quality has been ranked up with the Denon 5910.

also upscales to 1080i through DVI

I have one, love it.

There's a stack of different ones around. I have a Zensonic Z330 which is awesome but I think has been superseded. http://www.zensonic.com.au/ no idea what their things cost these days.

Also have a black Conia from http://www.dealsdirect.com.au/search/divx/ which works fine so far, but hasn't been used as much as the Zensonic. It's sold out there, but the one that is in stock is probably fine also. I assume they all work similarly these days.

I have an LG DV9723P. It plays Divx's, mp3's etc etc. All the fun stuff that you'd want. It was really cheap too ~$90 from JB's. Definitely recommend it. If you go to a JB's or similar store and walk around the DVD player section, you'll see the ones that can play divx actually have it written quite clearly on the machine and the box.

i used a pioneer that was rock solid and great interface. now i have a panasonic dvd/vcr combo with divx. it is even better, can cue and rewind divx at multi speeds, watch DRM divx, all sorts of stuff. i got mine for $218 but i'm connected XD

Make yourself a media center box, then you don't have to worry about new codecs and s*** when they come out, and you can customize it to do what you like, though it'll cost more :/

Got a Zensonic z340 it works quite well.

Modded xbox with XBMC will do the trick also.
