Just upgraded computer and getting the Blue Screen Of Death (BSOD). It has happened only a few times randomly...but if i really wanna piss myself of i just do a norton AV full system scan and i can gaurantee myself to have the BSOD after about 10-20 mins.

the BSOD error shows this.

0x00000077 (0x00000185, 0x00000185, 0x00000000, 0x001739000)
... +/- a few zeros :)

the system
amd 4600
asus M2N sli deluxe
2g ram
8800 albatron
seagate 120 (sata1)
wd 320 (sata2)
cd rom
various usb devices

what i have tried
- buying new hdd and intstall fresh windows ...no go
-reinstalling norton av a few times
-checked conectivity of hdd's and swapped sata sockets entirely
-checked for updates mobo and 8800
-ran memory check for 4 hrs
-check disk

- fist through the monitor (naa not really)

any bright thoughts that may lead me in the right direction or any smart arse remarks would be greatly appreciated.

what brand is the ram...is it a matched pair of 2x1gb sticks or the deadly 4 sticks of assorted death?

What size PSU are you feeding this rig? (Brand and rail ratings)

if it wasnt for the fact that you seems to be running an ATI card it sounds a lot like the infinite loop error a lot of nvidia people suffered some time ago, (EVEN ME) and when I researched that issue I learnt it was NOT only nvidia people getting it, but ATI guys as well. When I had an ATI based rig I never got it. But I would be trying swapping in and out your ram sticks, especially if you have 4 of them. Try just running with a gig, then a gig again with the others two ect..ect...its a bitch to fault find but a lot of time memory and its timings or a dodgy PSU can be the gremlin.

p.s oh and throw Norton out the window! :) steaming heap of resource hog s*** that it it!!!

heh u know me man, el cheapo AVG...hehe ..still I aint copped a baddy yet. (touch wood)

Great to hear the wheel is going good for you....alas the beer didnt last nearly as long, but was most enjoyable. :P

regards the posters prob. mate I had the infinite loop error a long time ago and from memory just rolling back to a more stable vid card driver did the trick. But I will be intereste to hear from some of the computer tech guys on here what they think, me I put money on ram or PSU. BSOD seem to go hand in hand with those type of issues. But there are a lot more knowledgeable peeps on here than me mate. good luck.

Most likely cause hardware wise for BSODs is RAM or HDD.

Download the latest BIOS for the mobo and flash it up - very very common thing in BIOS releases is new RAM compatibility support.

www.memtest.org
get it
run it
it if faults, run sticks invidually till you find the culprit - if not...

Looks like you've already eliminated the HDD but...
http://support.wdc.com/download/index.asp?cxml=n&pid=2&swid=3
get Data Lifeguard Diagnostic for Windows
run it
if your HDD faults then thats your problem.

After that still nothing... reply back.

This is you:

0xC0000185, or STATUS_IO_DEVICE_ERROR, is caused by improper termination or defective cabling on SCSI devices, or two devices attempting to use the same IRQ.

A 565w should be sufficient for a GTS, maybe not enough for a GTX going hard out, but you wouldn't be drawing bucketloads of power doing a virus scan as the GPU would be mostly idle...

It is possible to get a dodge PSU out of the box, if the rails aren't holding steady you can get BSODs that look very much like faulty RAM.

Don't forget CPU either, you don't see it all that much these days but I had a borked s939 CPU just yesterday at work making the machine play funny buggers.

Habib... been there done that

Anyway PROBLEM FIXED ...put the BSOD to sleep. Turns out it was the BIOS ... I thought i updated it 3 weeks ago but seems that i updated the Asus Update program but not the BIOS itself.

Dont i feel stoopid.

Thanks guys
