I got this last night after eating some steak I cooked far too rare. I've been exploding at both ends, anyone got any remedies?

I've been trying to sleep but my back is killing me so I can't even do that anymore

Drink Gatorade/Gastrolyte (Gatorade tastes better, Gastrolyte prolly does a better job), eat food, take Nurofen, enjoy the agony.

I've been having some gastrolyte, not much else though apart from juice, I don't think my stomach could handle anything solid

heaps of water and buscopan to relieve the stomach cramps

dry toast and lucozade.

once the pain eases a bit, go for some poached chicken

id like something that drops a lot of weight quickly (i dont mind a bit of mess, wifey is handy with the mop and bucket, even with one arm)
and something that the doctors would have to give me really really strong painkilling medication for

and some delerium for added trippyness

see nf can do for me eh?

Unfortunately your best bet is to wait it out. The most important thing is to maintain a good fluid intake - small sips of water regularly. Gastrolyte is good too but any liquid that you can keep down will work.

My friend ended up in hospital on a drip and with kidney impairment after getting bad food poisoning, cos he couldn't keep any fluid down - he's 6 foot 7 and lost 11kg in 4 days!

I recommend cooking your steak a bit more next time.

Get a friend/family member to goto the chemist and ask them for stuff that stops diarohea and get Buscopan.

you dont actually want to stop the runs, as thats how it gets the bugs out of your system

so just ease the pain and enjoy the flow

WetWired, did you have stomach pains and s***?

Cause there is a virus going around that gives similar symptoms except stomach aches and stuff.

I got something a few months ago which is basically the same if not the same as this...

these viruses (virii?) (i dunno if they are even virus as such but maybe a bacterial infection) are quite common in the aged care industry. they call it a gastro bug. basically it is highly contagious infection in the intestinal tract and it is like cartman has just played the bowel note. residents and staff alike just crap themselves without warning where they stand.

it supposed to be quite funny, if it's not happening to you.

There is more chance that you got food poisoning from not wiping the s*** off your hand before cooking.

You could also blame all of the things you used to cook your entire dinner or that gastro bug infi mentioned, as either of those are as - or more - likely suspects than just a rare stake.

So if you got sick from undercooking your steak, how do people eat their steak "Blue" or whatever? (When they just sear it either side and it's still mooing in the middle).

My aunt loves her steak like that and she's never had a problem.

Someone explain the science of steak cooking to me.

Combination of both.
The more you cook something the higher temperature the food is exposed to for a longer duration, meaning the more bacteria will be killed.

If the food is processed properly, stored properly and then cooked (however cooked) properly (by properly I mean with good hygeine) there shouldn't be any explosive problems.

Actually if u get food poisoning ur not meant to eat anything as it extends the time ur sick apparently. Just google it.

I been food poisoned a couple of times. Probably the worst was from Sun Fay chinese restaurant on station rd. at indoooroopilly. f***ing disgusting that place.

Jackpot noodles, Albert St

The day before I went to Sydney for a week. Shat myself the whole time. A nice doctor in chinatown bulk-billed me an appointment and hooked me up with Gastrolyte, some other s*** and a big packet of industrial strength codine, which really does knock you on your ass when you're in that state.

If a steak is stored properly you could safely eat it completely raw.

yeah i thought thats why you could practically eat it raw, it's not like chicken with all the bacteria etc

your steak was dodge from the start i think

No suprises there. Rumour has it that it holds the record for the highest fine following a health inspection in Qld (for businesses still running that is). Also rats have been spotted running around outside on occasion :/ They also don't quote prices on their menu, what's up with that?

I'm pretty sure it was the steak, It had been frozen and partially defrosted, I threw it on the bbq and when I was eating it one edge (not the middle surprisingly) tasted a bit rare compared to the rest, didn't think much of it until I woke up a 3 in the morning to go to the toilet, and then every 5 minutes after that

and what factor would that have on if it was frozen or not in the middle?

If it was a steak, then it being cooked rare is a non issue really.

yeah being a bit rare or whatever wouldn't make you sick

this sounds very dodge, i don't think it was the steaks fault.

Nothing. I'm saying that the bbq is probably the source of the contaminant and not the actual meat regardless of whether it was fully cooked or only partially defrosted.

well that steak was also the only thing I ate that day that no one else had. And no one else got sick. Everyone brought their own meat. I didn't eat lunch and I had toast for breakfast. I probably ate around 6-7 in the evening and first felt it's effects at 3 in the morning.

Apparently I've lost about 5 kilos in 2 days, but I'd say most of that was water and the lack of food in my system at the moment adding to my weight.

yeh a doctor told me a similar thing.. he rekn'd that most cases of food poisoning are from a meal 24hours before the first sign of symptoms. i argued that in my experience it's usually a couple of hours after eating the suspect meal... first a splitting headache followed by nausea & i usually start feeling better straight after emptying the contents of my stomach & drinking some water. he said that the cases he sees are usually the severe cases (so bad that people go & see the doctor) & my experiences are probably only very mild cases of food poisoning.

so yer.. hate to have a severe case :P

It wasn't the f***ing steak already, it was you and/or the method used to prepare and cook it or you didnt wash your hands before eating it etc.

You will put 5kg back on within a day of resuming eating/drinking properly.

3-7 Days without water, 30 days without food.

After that, then you're f***ed son.

loki, i always thought it was the rule of 3s...

3 minutes without oxygen (to the brain)
3 days without water
3 weeks without food

Loki

In reality it comes down to the individual, and water depends on climate you live in and other co-morbidities.

If you were in the middle of the Sahara for example I doubt you'd make 3 days.

As for food, it depends how much you have stored away to begin with, a fatter person will survive longer than someone who's anorexic, weighs 28kg and doesn't have much body fat at all.

After 3 weeks you're probably going to have ketoacidosis [Diabetics quite often suffer from this - Blood sugar/glucose rises from a lack of insulin so the body breaks down lipids and produces alot of Ketones, in our starvation scenario there would simply be a lack of glucose to break down and it is life threatening] and hypotension at the very least from breaking down lipids as a lone source of energy, but as far as surviving goes, 30+ days is doable but it's a risk nonetheless..

In short, the rule of "3's" is a pretty good generalisation/easy to remember rule.
