Got fax spam from Dell today about this. I'm pretty tempted, though its an obscenely big monitor at a pretty obscene price (though when I think back to a couple years ago when I dropped $750 on a 17" CRT it doesn't seem too bad).

I recommendation these monitors. I paid 1300 for it about 6 months ago and got my free printer which I havent used yet. sweet

Theyve been hovering around this price for ages, they were below $1k a few weeks back, and the 30 inchers were below $2k.

If I got one of those and an HDTV tuner, would it mean I could watch TV and DVD's in HD? Or would I need some other stuff as well?

No it is not. After about a day it feels normal. Very normal. I'm tempted to get a 2nd for the GFs PC just so she'll go back to using her damn PC and leave mine alone.

It runs my HD movies fine. Awesomely in fact. But that's movies in 1080i from HD source in .ts, not straight from a HDTVTuner.

Flatmates (RQR H@mmer) has got the 24" Samsung an it's pretty sweet. I'd prefer to be able to get a bit further back from than he sits though. In a 1st person shooter, you practically have to move your head side to side just to take it all in.

I got a 30" 3007WFP on friday, kicks some serious arse.

i have the 20 inch version and it seems a nice size but would have now preffered to have gotten the 24 inch, quality wise no complaints apart from needing a beefy video card to run games in high res

bloody oath fish, been using a 24" 2405 for about a year now, walked into some guys office the other day who was using dual screen 30"'s and it was like daaaamn thats what I want.

I bought a 22" Viewsonic a few weeks back from Computer Alliance for $550 and it f***ing rocks extremely hard. Going from a 19" crt to this is heaven. So much better for games, movies and surfing the net.

I'm guessing that 3 year on site warranty covers anything that goes wrong which is awesome, so they come out to you. But so far so good regarding dead pixels.

Ahh, it's widescreen though so doesn't do 1600x1200. Still, pretty good price

The dell 24 can do 1600*1200 though.

The Dell's still beat anything hands down, but the close second is the Chi Mie or however you spell it that Computer Alliance sell. Its actually a nicer monitor than the viewsonic, and just as cheap.

I was keen to get the Dell, but the idea of paying half the price for way more than half the monitor with a viewsonic is good. Does anyone other than CA have them for the same price?

Dell can be phyically rotated 90 degrees (absolutely awesome for working on blocks of code) into A4 mode, Viewsonic can't - it would need to relies on software drivers (eg nview rotate etc).

That said 3 of the mates have the 22" Viewsonics an all love them, the other mate has the Samsung 24" (same as dell but better waranty). I myself have a 20" BenQ an once I start my new job on the 18th I'll be going for the Samsung 24"

Well this is for home so any coding will be purely recreational anyway - I actually have a rotation-capable monitor @ work and I've never tried rotating it for coding, I should give it a crack one day.

Most decent stores (Umart, etc) will allow you to bring it back for an on-the-spot swap. Crappier stores like Gamedude "don't deal with LCD warranties" (direct quote from a staff member I called).

Ive had mine for about a month now, and wow what a beast!
3yr Onsite warranty, Zero dead pixels for the entirety of the warranty too.
Portrait net browsing is damn good... so much to see... so little scrolling.
Only downside is that its not available in black in Aus, doesnt meet TC03 standard for some reason... didnt look too much into that issue.
Also, from memory, the 244T uses an 8bit panel, compared to 6bit on the Dell 2407WFP.

There is a tonne of movies in HD. New things are coming out in BlueRay and HD-DVD but older movies are being broadcast in 1080i on HD channels in the US and people are capping them. I'm not aware of any big name movies that aren't in HD, including things as far back as Fallen Down, which in 1080i flogs the crap out of my DVD version.

Yes, the 2405 didn't have HDMI but the 2407 (current model) has HDMI.

wouldnt that mean it needs intergrated speakers? otherwise what is the advantage over dvi?

I dont think it does have hdmi, at least it isnt mentioned on the specs page.

it's just dvi with hdcp I thought.
