When you go fullscreen can you lose the borders top and bottom?

i don't have any borders? :|
i've got two black bits either side of the video im watching but i think it's cos it's some small pron and that's as big as it goes.
may be the quality of video you're watching?

Maverik, When I say borders I mean the top has all the options :-
File View Settings Audio Navigation Help
above that is the windows blue bar, and below the options are the play stop etc.....and at the bottom is the movie time length etc....

I know you can rid of this in full screen but I want to watch it in a window whilst I talk to my mate at the same time.

double click in the middle of the picture?

well i got no idea.. i use windows media center when i watch a dvd like that, that takes it away. might not help you if you need the codecs with VLC though, sorry :(

in the middle of the video window right click it and select "wallpaper" it'll set it as the windows wallpeper like active desktop, but you can still have windows on top of it just like a static wallpaper.

or use media player classic, you can turn off everything except the video window. status bar, file menu, max/min/close buttons, all can be made to go bye bye from the view menu
