Pretty crazy stuff. Could be good for NK, more food/aid. Or maybe really really bad. Thoughts? |

I know that NK is evil and all... but why is them having 1 or 2 WMD's any different to America having just short of 6,000 ? The basic idea is that the world has generally come to understand that nuclear weapons are bad. However, we do live in a world where there is a pretty precarious but stable balance between the major powers who have nukes. The USA and the Brits won't nuke China and Russia or their friends for fear of known reprisals, and in return the Chinese and the Russkies are reluctant to do the same. Effectively a state of stalemate exists between the current major players, and there has been a slow process of disarmament. One of the long term goals of the UN, and the reason behind the signing of the non-proliferation treaty is to prevent wider production and use of nuclear weapons. Fair or not, the established club of nuclear nations have for 60 or so years managed to not nuke the f*** out of the planet. Its scary enough having Pakistan and India involved in a nuclear arms race, we don't need another on the Korean peninsula. NK is pretty much out of control diplomaticallly doing all sorts of crazy sabre rattling under the cover of China's protection. Them getting nukes is a pretty bad thing, because it presents the very real possibility of a nuclear-fueled Korean War II. A pre-emptive strike on SK could invoke a war between China and the states which would be pretty f***ed up all around :( |

I know that NK is evil and all... but why is them having 1 or 2 WMD's any different to America having just short of 6,000 ? please take this everyone-should-have-nukes-because-they-US-does bulls*** elsewhere. The right to massacre hundreds of thousands of people with one small rocket isn't every country's fundamental right. There's nothing at all nice about the NK regieme or it's treatment of its people. To pretend that it is no different to any other country is flawed for that very reason. The NK regieme is significantly different to pretty much every other country in the region. We don't want NK to have nukes because we don't trust that they will only use it as a weapon of last resort, just like we don't trust Iran to not use them as a weapon of last resort, since they've promised repeatedly to 'wipe isreal off the map' and harping on about how oblitterating Israel with nuclear weapons would only be a small blight on the muslim people (due to the fallout or any retaliation) but a massive benefit since them jews would be dead. |

I know that NK is evil and all... but why is them having 1 or 2 WMD's any different to America having just short of 6,000 ? Maybe because as much as the US like to control things and f*** it all up they don't normally come out with this sort of rhetoric. Link e.g. The first message is that Kim Jong-il is the greatest of the peerless national heroes Korea has ever produced. Kim is unique in that he is the first to equip Korea with sufficient military capability to take the war all the way to the continental US. Under his leadership the DPRK has become a nuclear-weapons state with intercontinental means of delivery. Kim is certainly in the process of achieving the long-elusive goal of neutralizing the American intervention in Korean affairs and bringing together North and South Korea under the umbrella of a confederated state. and Unlike all the previous wars Korea fought, a next war will be better called the American War or the DPRK-US War because the main theater will be the continental US, with major cities transformed into towering infernos. and The third message is that the nuclear-armed North Korea will be a major boon to China and Russia. Nuclear-armed, the two countries are friendless in case of war with the US. The US has nuclear-armed allies, such as the UK and France. The Americans have a network of military bases around the two countries, while they have none. The presence of a mighty nuclear weapons state in Korea should be most welcome to Russia and China. but who could forget The fourth point is that the North Korea government of Kim does not care at all whether Japan goes nuclear, or that South Korea and Australia follow suit. We're doing what now? |

I think we will see the next world power emerge and sort this out. China will have the most influence over both sides in this. But I do love the way the Federal Government keeps saying we are a target for them. Not many outside of this country could tell you where Australia is, and would they even care I doubt it very much.

I read about that Tapeondong-2 missile and its maximum strike range - at this stage it'll just make it to Darwin, so no threat of nuclear attack on Australia where it matters.

pretty precarious but stable balance Looks like an oxymoron right? I say stable because we haven't had a nuclear conflict (let alone a war) in over 60 years of production and testing of weapons (unless we're counting the end of WW2, which Westerners tend tend not to because it is a s***ty thing to think about). The lines were drawn up long ago and the major players are basically pretty happy with the status quo. They don't want a war. I say precarious because there is a huge penalty if the system falls down. Major nuclear war is basically armageddon, and minor scale conflict (limited to the NK peninsula, or the sub-continent) woudld have seriously f***ed up ecological ramifications. Its like a movie cliche school bus sitting on the edge of a cliff. If we all stay very f***ing still nothing bad happens, and eventually we'll get it all sorted out. But if someone doesn't shut up that noisy, red-headed North Korean f***er soon we could all slide down the hill! last edited by Hogfather at 16:59:32 09/Oct/06 |

NK is seriously f***ed economically and resource wise since the horrendous natural disasters and famines of the early 2000's. Uncle Kim is spending a s***load on his 'muscle' building program whilst millions starve. It's been long thought that he is simply using this tactic (which is his onlu ploy available to him) to get the rest of the world community to appease him by enormous amounts of relief and funds. I saw unbelievable footage smuggled out og NK for a doco of people actually trying to eat grass and dirt beside a railroad cutting and the state police bashing the s*** out of anyone trying to either help these people or film them. He is probably the craziest mother f***er in the world right now, loves Hollywood and fancies himself as some s*** hot movie stud the women all ache for.
Seriously if you saw this show about his psyhcological development from his childhood days till now you would be a s***scared as I am. I recon he is the No.1 craziest psychopath in the world and now the f***er has nukes and a attitude of extreme predjudice to anyyone other than himself. This development causes me a lot of concern. http://www.gsreport.com/articles/art000017.html http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2003/06/08/wkor08.xml http://worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=31996 http://www.iht.com/articles/1999/02/24/kor.2.t_0.php last edited by Psycho! at 17:15:16 09/Oct/06 |

That sounds very familiar.... oh that's right that's the same excuse bush used when he found out that sadam had no WMD's. It sounds familiar because the question is the same. What to do? The answer is "appeasement doesn't work". We've tried it before, it doesn't work. Appeasement left us with castrophic numbers of dead and much of the world in ruins through two world wars. Clinton tried it with North Korea not very long ago and what happened? Well they just test fired a nuke that they promised not to persue. Appeasement's getting us a long way in the Sudan as well, "sir, please stop massacring black muslims or we'll have another meeting about it." But there's an obvious answer to nukes, that is give those that want them a choice: Give them up or else. South Afrika was told this not too long ago. They chose to verifiably dismantle their nuclear weapons program. 18 months later all was well. Saddam tried to bulls*** and bluster his way through it. He's gone. Libya saw what happened to Saddam and has come around and are well on their way to verifiably dismantling their program. The main ones left now are NK and Iran. You can ridicule the US's iraq effort, just like in the same breath you can critisize them for lack of action elsewhere in the world, but Iraq encouraged people to believe they had WMDs, they made efforts to obtain WMDs, and we now know that Iraq doesn't have them and Saddam is gone. |

I'm no expert, but I would have thought it would take more than a metric arseload of conventional weapons to mimic the seismic disturbance caused by a nukular weapon.

Doesn't matter how small a payload it was, it's a f***ing nuke for god sakes
Hiroshima was only 15 kilotons an look at what that s*** did... A megaton is is roughy 907,000 metric tons of TNT Most of the current bombs laying around glowing evily have have a payload of 1 megaton The world's most powerful hydrogen bomb was detonated on the 30th Oct 1961 (over Novaya Zemlya). The bomb had an explosive force of 58 megatons, or almost 6,000 times more powerful than the Hiroshima bomb. The bomb was dropped by an aircraft, and detonated 365 metres (1,200 feet) above the surface. The shock wave produced by this bomb was so powerful, it went thrice around the earth. The mushroom cloud extended almost 60 kilometres into the atmosphere." Don't know about you lot but the thought of anyone dropping this sorta s*** on any country makes me sad to be called human |

Don't know about you lot but the thought of anyone dropping this sorta s*** on any country makes me sad to be called human aint that the truth..the really scary thing is that Kim's view of the world is so screwed that he doesn't give a f*** if he goes and takes a few million with him, he sees himself as this strong virile leader taking it to the US..some of the propoganda material in the NK is horrendoues...huge posters with rockets and bombs raining down on people in the streets..obviously American/Western streets. As I was saying about that doco I saw they had some refugees who had done time in some of the 'holding reprograming camps' and it was truly terrifying to hear the extent that he controls and brainwashes the population. They had another smuggled film clip of a 3rd grade school room with the female teacher up the front leading all the little boys and girls in this repetative chant..it was basically kim is great, uncle Kim loves us all, death to the west, murder the Westners ect.ect.. really chilling stuff. I reckon he is more of a threat than anyone else in the world today, I only hope that the suggestion in Team America that he is in cahoots with terrorist organisations is wrong because he is such a mad f***er he would give them nukes easily and keep his hands clean. Take him down I reckon. |

550 Tons!? You have to think one of two things:
1. That they've not been able to enrich enough Uranium that they think they can afford to waste a large quantity on their test. 2. That the test went horribly wrong and didn't go completely fission, with the reaction stopping prematurely. If this is the case, you can guess someone's head is going to roll. In the latter case, it means not only can they not get Taepodong-2 missiles working right, but they can't get their nukes right either. If we're lucky, they might fire a nuclear tipped Taepodong-2 and it might just crash straight back to Pyonyang :D |

I believe that in my life time we'll experience a nuke detonation either by;
a) Terrorist organisations finally getting their hands on some enriched Uranium. I can't decide if it will be on US soil or if it'll be in the backyard tent their trying to make the bomb in. b) North Korea finally flipping a stack over how much "interference" the Westerners have in the running of their country. The US would still be a primary target but may extend to the UK as they an hit more of England with the Taepondong's then they can of the US (just Alaska at the moment) c) The [Americans|Chinese|Russians|English|Frenchies|Indians|Pakis] having the pants scared off them enough by NK that they'll drop the first one instead of waiting to be attacked. Ever since nukes were invented it has just been a matter of time before the lunatics of the world get their hands on them - after all it's just science. Kimbo is the first nutter with access to nukes that doesn't care for international relations or the preservation of life (as evidenced by how he treats his own citizens). Let's just hope his ICBM's can't have their range increased to hit Brissy or else there won't be another QGL. |

From what I've read around the place previously and also here on Wikipedia, NK's rocketry is pretty lame as it currently stands.
Not to reduce the severity of the situation, but hopefully even if these nuclear detonations go as well as NK would have hoped, and it seems like maybe they didn't, then we can rely on them having such a s*** delivery system that they can't hit anything. I would be positively s***ting myself if I was in Japan though. NK could probably build a really big catipault and throw it at them :( |

i cant help but feel that george w. bush is to blame for this really. clinton had a treaty with big kim and things were peachy, kim wasnt happy but he knew where he stood. then george bush comes along thinking he can do better, and he tries to screw big kim over, and then all that effort that clinton made to keep the world happy went down the toilet.
ps. i <3 north korea i think there da bomb. |

Maybe the tiny kiloton rating is because they tested a very small nuke designed to fit in a suitcase or something especially designed for terrorists!!!11

Clinton gave NK the two water reactors they have used to harvest the plutonium for these test, back in 1994 on the condition that they not be used to produce weapons. America gives 420 million dollars a year to NK in 'aid'..last quarter Bush gave KIM 95 mill to be a good boy and shut the f*** up..but he has played them all for a song and will no doubt become peacful if he palm is greased again. The big thing I heard on the news today was that China is so pissed with NK at the moment because they can see their chances of Olympic $$$ going down the drain.

surely we have laser satelites that can take out these crazy dictators? President Ronald Ray-Gun tried to organise that with his Star Wars initiative but got shouted down because of the expected cost invovled. IT might get moved up the 'to do' list now. ? |

North Korea FAQ. I was wondering if there was a North Korea website and lo and behold, their is! The FAQ is pretty interesting but the entire website feels a little creepy.

'creepy' is a good description...man some that is sadly what a lot of the unfortunates in that counrty really do believe. Evrything they read or hear about anything outside the world is vetted to the extreme. scary s***..Orwell shouldn't have used a farm for his book - animals would never behave like us.
