hey all,
Got another new tank up and running.. decided to move back to Tropicals for a while - was starting to miss a planted tank. Only neons, rams and a couple of gouramis at the moment. So heres a shot, let me know what you think. Cheers. http://members.optushome.com.au/exz0r2/trop |

Looks impressive. Usual question... how much that set you back? I don't know much about fish (use to have a number of Betta's) but would one day love to get a set up like that (or Hermi's).

Cost 590 for the tank and cabnet. The tank was new, but it came with a second hand hood because the previous owner over filled the tank and short circuited the lights. Needed some drying out, but it all ok now. So taking the second hand hood also got me a free external filter.

Those fish are awesome.. and you got a saratoga! how much did he set you back? Nice tank anyway man.. would be great to have a tank that big.. expensive fish at that size. Did yours grow to that size, or buy them big? Do you find that some dominate the tank?

I bought the Saratoga off Stinky @60 cm for $100
It's around 70cm now =) and deserving of a bigger tank :( Thinking of donating him to UnderWater World or something wear he can really move around. All of the others I've grown up from fry/juveniles. The Devils are all from the same parents who wouldn't stop spawning! The big Devil with the hump is about twice the size of the parents! |

QUESTION:
I have a tropical tank (which has nothing in it atm) But when i had it up and running last i had problem with the plants. They would either die (and i had plant foody stuff, can't remember what it was called) Or all the goddamn fish would eat them, or they would just float out of the gravel (no matter what i tried to keep them in) So teach me the ways of the plants, as i want to get the tank up and running again. |

If your plants float all the time (an you get that a lot when you have cichilids) tie them to a rock or a log with fishing line. This will help em get a root structure established an keep emselves "planted" to the gravel/rock/log
You can get specific plants that fish don't find edible Get some decent lighting (standard fluro just doesn't cut it). |

Those feeders are so cute demon. heh. do you mean those feeders in my first pic or are you having a go at the size of my cichlids!? ;p i catch the feeders (which are native red-fin gudgeons) in a creek near my olds place... usually get about 20 per week which keeps the cichlids in hunting form! :D joanna: for me the plants are mostly trial & error. i do ask at the aquarium if particular plants have particular requirements before i buy them because some need lots of light, etc. but mainly i just buy a bunch of a particular type & try it out. with my cichlids i can't get anything to spindly or delicate because they'll just butcher it. the main cause of plants being uprooted in my tank is the rivulatus chasing other fish at high speed through the bunchs of plants before they get a decent root system. my most successful aquarium plant atm are the crypticons, which if you check out my full tank pic are the bunch just right of the middle & up against the front glass of the tank. crypticons are very solid once they take root & send out undergravel shoots to make new bushes. |

My beautiful 5yr old Angel fish is farked at the mo. He has some kind of bladder issue where he is upside down most of the time, on the bottom on his back ect, swimming loop da loops all day..poor bugga.
I have read a bit about hand feeding them some boiled pea pulp which apparently can help fix a infection in their floatation bladder ect..but he is still tail up on the bottom of the tank. :( Every time I go to get him out he swims off and yells, "I'm not dead yet, I'm not dead yet!" I'll give him a day and if he doesnt come good I'll put him down, he is getting no food while he is like this and I won't see him starve to death. |

Just got a 6ft tank thursday night. Came with external 1200l/h filter and all the rocks and few of the fish.
spent $150 friday afternoon and another $200 saturday grabbing water testers, more fish, tank cleaners etc. Is my first tank, luckily i have a few mates who know what they're doing helping me out. tropical setup with 51 fish atm. A mate grabbed the grass from the Springfield Lakes lake, i'll be going back to grab more and see what else i can find Have no idea what most of the names are but heres a quick list of most of them. 22 blue neons 1 convict(awesum, suprisingly doesnt eat the lil fellas but certainly a bully hehe) 3 black catfish type alge lovers 1 yellow slim alge eater 2 silver dollars 1 crayfish(I call him CrayBo) 3 b&w spottie ballon and nonballon fish 4 silver sharks 7 crownloaches(look like tiger stripes) 3 glass ghost 6 s***ty goldfish type fellas 1 lil random 1 other random dude Think thats most of em pics comming soon Only got the tank sitting on the ground atm but have couches setup in front of it. Will be getting a stand/table madeup for it. Joy and I watch em for hours, how awesum are they, real relaxing. Convict cruises around playing with all the others. Alge grows really fast, gave everything a good clean yesterday, siphon thingy works real well but takes ages heh. last edited by Fnukle at 18:18:00 22/Oct/06 |

nice one fnukle .. get them pix going! ;D
Alge grows really fast the most common reason for overgrowth of algae is too much light, if your lights aren't on a timer... put em on one n set it for about 8hours per day. try & prevent any sunlight from touching the tank because that will also promote algae growth. the convict will eat those neons eventually... its just a matter of time :P i love the darting movement of convicts & they way they always check out new stuff in the tank. :D if you get more than one convict they will fight (or mate depending on the sexes) but they will rarely do serious damage to each other... it's just like qgl fights... 99.9% bluff ;D nice looking 8' tank Excruci@ting! i'm gunna have to get a bigtank one of these days :D i reckon you should get a rocky backdrop for it to hide the wall n those cables. :] |

Yea found that out about the alge couple days later but by fast i mean within 8 hours of the tank having water/fish/stuff put in it all the ornamenty thingys like the plastic plants and boat/car etc was totally covered.
bought a timer for me lights but they're only normal everyday house/work fleros. I heard something about getting proper fish tank UV style lights, whats the dealio there? Having drama getting decent photos for yas. end up abit fuzzy. heres the better of the lot so far will get more http://img387.imageshack.us/img387/5673/p1010241af3.th.jpghttp://img170.imageshack.us/img170/1449/p1010292nd2.th.jpg http://img170.imageshack.us/img170/1293/p1010275vz3.th.jpghttp://img20.imageshack.us/img20/5652/p1010257so1.th.jpg |

tank setup looks very cool fnukle!
you can get the fluro tubes that are meant specially for plant growth called 'grow-lux' or something like that :P they have that slightly violet look to the light which seems to bring out some colours in fish. there are tubes that are supposed to limit algae growth as well but the ones i have tried didnt seem too effective at this. i have found with taking pics that i get the best results from my digicam if i take them at night with the room lights off, no flash & just the tank lights on. this reduces the reflections you get on the glass faces. |

Thanks guys :)
I wont worry about the special lights then. grass got munched right down last night which is great. Didnt have much at all in there, good to know it will get eaten so will grab some more. My goal is to have enough plants so they get eaten but not eaten to death but mostly so spawn have a chance at growing up. Bought some plant from Beyond Aquarium on way home from work just $4 dollars a bunch. Ads abit of variety which im a big fan of, wont do a great deal for spawn i reckon but they didnt have the Java Moss type stuff i wanted so grabbed some longy leafy greeny stuff. Ive put Blue vegtible colouring in the tank so should be blue but tank does seem greenish. :s Will put more in heh backdrop really makes a huge difference to my tank, cost a fair bit from Aquarium on beaudesert rd but its perfect quality print. |
