Topic: New computer!

I’m looking at purchasing a new desktop but I’ve been out of the market for sometime.

What are some good CPU and motherboard combos? Also, what is the best bang for my buck video card? I’m not against putting some serious dollars in my video department, I just don’t want to if I don’t have to.

I’m looking to play games and develop on, so I’d also like to run two monitors as easily as possible.

Any starting points?

get a Intel 6600 2.4ghz, 2Gb DDR2 ram ( either 800mhz, or low latency 667mhz ), Asus P5B, Nvidia 7900GT ( either fast 256mb, or std 512mb, both around same price ). Get a good case, then throw away the psu and get a decent PSU. a 72Gb SATA 10k, and a 300+Gb 7.2k SATA. Plus the usual extras.

I'm basically gonna get what stinky suggested there; wanted to order it today but ran out of time and prolly won't be able to do it until Monday now :(

Apparently ram prices just went up, so you'll be paying an extra hundred bucks for the fast 800mhz stuff, some benchmarks show the low-latency 667mhz ram doing pretty damn close so is a viable alternative to save a cpl dollars.

Iv had a quick play with Vista on the machine stinky mentioned, and it runs awesome on a standard install. Will do some further testing this week to see how it compares to XP's benchmarks.
