yeh, man one thing I want to do before I kark it is to go and watch a launch of one of these babies. Each of the Space Shuttle's solid rocket boosters burns 5 tons of propellant per second, it would be an awesome sight.

Looks like a typical american SUV to me :P
I got up close and personal with one in Washington DC, they're every bit as big as they look. http://members.optusnet.com.au/furgle/day11.034.jpg SR71 looked almost as big with the shuttle about to rear-end it http://members.optusnet.com.au/furgle/day11.006.jpg last edited by Furgle at 22:44:07 30/Aug/06 |

I would have preferred to see a B2 stealth, but for some strange reason they dont have any on display - SR71 was a pretty cool second choice and worth the 2 hour drive.

I missed a launch in 1997 by 4 days. The shuttle was sitting on the pad and had been sent along the crawl way the day before. Kennedy space centre is a great place to visit. They have a full Saturn 5 in a building you can walk around. Now that thing was big, 2 times as tall as the shuttle and was powered by good ol Kero :) |

Went to Kennedy in 1995 a few days before a launch, got a bunch of photos of it sitting on the launch pad.Got to walk around inside a retired shuttle at cape kenaveralalalala (whatever the f*** its called, also saw aligators on the side of the road which was pretty funny) Amazing machines to be sure. There was no launches at the time I was there which sucked but the tourist stuff has alot of the old rockets they used on show as well as the shuttle. Its a must see if you go to florida. There is a tour that shows the 'road' they use to take the shuttles out to the launchpads, like in the photo, just lots of stones and shut but the vehicles they use to transport them are amazing, got to see one of those in person and wowsers. It would be insane to see a launch but, very dissapointed I didnt get to see one. |

Qmass, The shuttle at Rocket Park is a mock up bud, not a retired shuttle.
Still very interesting though. |

I seem to remember that the enterprise was the test model that wasn't space ready but I think it was used for aerodynamic tests etc.

It flew, it's been attached to the rocket, it piggybacked on the 747, hardley what I'd call a scale model.
It was identical except for the engines, and was going to be used as an acutal shuttle until they changed the design of the body. Calling it a scale model hardly does it justice... Prototype would be a better description. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_Shuttle_Enterprise last edited by Furgle at 07:57:19 31/Aug/06 |
