If you consider that there has been an average of 160,000 troops in the Iraq theatre of operations during the last 22 months, and a total of
2,112 deaths, that gives a firearm death rate of 60 per 100,000 soldiers.

The firearm death rate in WashingtonD.C.is 80.6 per 100,000 for the same period.

That means that you are about 25% more likely to be shot and killed in the U.S. Capitol, which has some of the strictest gun control laws in the nation, than you are in Iraq.

Conclusion: The U.S.should pull out of Washington

Sounds to me like you have been got by NRA propoganda. They bend statistics like superman bends steel.

I bet it was only firearm deaths. ie. it only counts if it was actually a bullet, not bombs, grenades, fires or other combat related deaths. And I bet they counted every serviceman over there, rather then saying on average there were x number there at any 1 time.

And it sure as hell won't count the number of locals or non american foreigners there good (Brits, japs, aussies etc etc) or bad (the "insurgents")

Always love how they have a constitutional right to bear arms. When it was written "arms" were big ass muskets and s***. Not pocket sized 200 rounds per minute killing machines. And the actual wording is

"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed." (Second Amendment to the Constitution.)

How many Americans are actually part of a miltia ? Hell how many gun owning Americans are properly trained ?

And if you read that, the US constituion actual encourages / supports terrorism in a bizarre way, the suggestion being that if you don't like what your government is doing you should rise up against it in armed conflict... which would be the same stuff they are trying to stamp out in Iraq ? ...

Like many other large cities, Washington, D.C., has enacted a number of strict gun restriction laws. Handguns have been outlawed (unless registered as of February 5, 1977), carrying guns (concealed or not) is prohibited, and all guns and ammunition must be registered [2]. Critics, citing numerous statistics, have questioned the efficacy of these restrictions, and many consider the ban a violation of the 2nd Amendment protections on bearing arms. The combination in Washington of strict gun restriction laws and high levels of gun violence is sometimes used to criticize gun restriction laws in general as ineffectual. Critics using this example fail to mention that it is relatively easy to obtain guns in neighboring states with laxer gun restiction laws, especially Virginia. The inflow of guns purchased outside the city in states where gun restriction laws are less stringent compromises the city's own strict regulations. Pro and anti-gun interests groups will continue to spiral on in endless debate about the efficacy of gun restrictions, and due to its prominence as the national capital, its strict gun restriction laws and its reputation as the former "murder capital" of the U.S., Washington is destined to continue to be a popular example in the wider debate on gun restrictions.

How do you manage to turn 2112 / 160000 into 60 / 100,000?

2112 (deaths) / 22 (months) = 96 deaths per month
100,000 / 160,000 (soldiers) = 0.625 to get the multiplier to apply to the number of deaths per month equal to a per 100,000 value
0.625 * 96 deaths per month = 60 deaths per 100,000.

What? They meant the arms of bears, how could anyone confuse that with weapons? :P

Matt are you trying to suggest I should have used bare ?

Bare is to expose, while bear (as a transitive verb) is to support (amongst other meanings including a furry animal with teeth and s***).

Or were you simply taking advantage of possibly humorous homonyms ?

I think what they really meant was the right to bare arms, in essence, to roll up your sleeves or wear those ridiculous tank top things that people wear.

Okay, thats not what I think, but everyone else seems to be taking the piss *shrugs*.

Still there are easily more people that die from armed violence in the US everydey than there are dying in Iraq. That doesn't make it any better though.. just makes it sad.

Gun control is f***ing bulls***, people should be allowed to carry whatever they please. Anything else is an invasion of their rights.

Can you outrun a guy with a big metal club? Probably.
