Topic: Problems with new Windows Messenger?

Hey guys has anyone had any problems with the new windows messenger?

i've had a few but it only started last night..
i've had WM on my desktop computer for a few weeks and didn't have a problem, just got my new laptop yesterday and installed it on their naturally..

now when i went to add someone last night, it added them and put them in "other contacts" then they told me via a message on gmail that it says i added them but it says i'm offline and i'm like oh maybe there's just lag, so the person tried adding me and once i restarted my messenger the add request came up and i clicked okay and they finally went onto my screen, then it said there was two of her, so i deleted one and all was well and fine..
then someone else tried to add me, and the same problem happened

ANOTHER problem that i've started having with the same person is that they don't recieve all my messages and i have to copy and paste them again and again.

at first i thought this was a glitch on the other persons side, but then why would i have the other problems with the other "adder" and i also had the same double up problem with my father and still do, it says there are two of him. :|

anyone else had these problems?

I had this problem today for the first time. Very annoying. Ended up resorting to email because most of my messages wouldn't go through. It was only with one contact though, everyone else was fine.

that's the same with me it's only with one person the messages not going through
but now this thing with my dad not being on my list and then he is on my list but there's two of him, very frustrating.. :|

let me know if you keep having that problem with the person trog because i thought it might've just been a thing last night
but it happened again today.. and it seems to only be me to them, i think im getting all her messages fine, well as far as i know

Yeah, I had this problem where either live would freeze up upon logging in, or say I had an invalid name then show either no contacts or just two or three.

Went back to 7.5, no problems since.

With the second problem. I take it you are talking to them when you are on appear offline or online? Sometimes that happens when you are talking to them when they are on appear offline. Because the person who is on appear offline has to talk to the other person once every couple minutes or soo. Otherwise the person not on appear offline will get the message "this message could not be delivered".

I've been using this for a very long time now. Been able to talk while on appear offline is the best thing.

nah it's not that because we're both online, i don't even get the message that it "can't be delivered" to me i think she's gotten it but just was slow to reply because she said "have you said anything cos the last thing i got was a ":)"
or whatever i said..
so i don't know :|

After you do that, uninstall Gaim and install aMSN instead so that you have an MSN client that's not meant for blind folk.

I don't seem to have any problems with it apart from folder sync not working and slowass file transfers but that's been there in just about every version for me.

Mav i've got all of the same problems as you. Including 2 entries of the same person under 2 different groups.

It s***s me except i just couldn't be bothered changing to anything else.

Well if you like all the ads, stupid buttons, nudges and other assorted bloatware I guess the GAIM client isn't for you then ;)

Using a third party patch to remove probably half the application so you end up with something thats not annoying as hell... doesn't that say something about the initial product?

Dude, please stop. You are making a fool of yourself.

There are plenty of free and open-source MSN clones out there, but GAIM just happens to be one of the worst and ugliest in existence. I have no idea why you are pimping it, except if GAIM happened to be the only alternative client you have ever used ...

Here's are a couple of official screenshots of GAIM:

Pretty ugly hey? What was that ... you're asking me what those other icons are?

Oh, rubba-chikin forgot to mention that GAIM is "A multi-protocol instant messaging (IM) client", hence the messy, cluttering icons.

So much for GAIM not being bloatware hey?

Here's an official screenshot of a simpler and prettier aMSN :

if you only used it for msn wouldn't it only have one set of icons? that aside, gaim still looks like anus. if you want to go the multi im client route why not just use trillian? it's not quite as ugly.

I was illustrating the point that its multi-protocol support amounts to bloatware whether you have non-MSN contacts or not :)

But yes, much anus involved.

Yeah okay I agree it totally looks so much worse than aMSN!...

Well have fun with all those "features" with live messenger then http://forums.offtopic.com/images/smilies/kekekegay.gif

Yes I do have myself on my own list, thats about the only thing GAIM doesnt do, display what you have your nick set as.

edit: free hosting sucks... changed

Gaim, like soooooooooo many linux applications, has a default mode of stupid useless massive fat ugly icons. It s***s me to tears and it's why I can't bring myself to use Linux on the desktop, even though it caters to 95% of what I need these days.

I think with Gaim it's more that GTK's widget set is balls ugly, but that's no excuse for the prolific massive f***ing icons. You can trim it down so it uses smaller icons and takes up less real estate though.

I just tried to sign in with Gaim to MSN and it failed? I wonder if it doesn't work with MSN Live?

Yeah been having problems with it as well. Apparently it just doens't like it when wmp plays whilst it's on. Have also been lagging about when playing games online and when I turn off win live it seems to get rid of the lag.

Thank f*** someone else hates GTK as much as I do. I'm not sure what the developers were thinking, but they forgot to tackle the 'interface' part of "user interface".

Linux on the desktop isn't bad, as long as you stay away from Fedora and other distros that have very, very ugly default settings and use Gnome as the base window manager. Also, the Nautilus file manager is just shocking and very painful to use.

Basically I follow these steps on a new install:

1. Kill/delete all Gnome/GTK applications
2. Boot into KDE and set it as default
3. Apply Plastik skin (to leave the 1980's skins behind)
4. Make double-clicking titlebar perform maximise/minimise
5. Turn off app-launch icon notification
6. Get as many KDE/Qt replacement programs as possible

There you go .. by this stage it is familiar enough for 90% of Windows users to navigate and use without bitching or complaining at all. It's amazing how just a minute or two of config editing can make a difference.

GTK is the worst UI library ever. I hope the developers burn in hell :(

Anyone up for making a QGLinux distro? :P
