Hey guys I was wondering if you could help me out with this problem. I've tried googling for similar problems but nothing I found has worked. I have a Motorola Surfboard 4200, and it works fine with the USB cable, but because I need to set up a router (Netgear wgr614) I need to use the Ethernet connection. I tried connecting the surfboard directly to the computer through the ethernet connection, and using the motorola install program to set it to ethernet. The computer never detects the modem. I tried connecting the computer to the router to the surfboard, and the router install program doesn't detect a network that way. I've tried using a combo of the computer->router->surfboard and computer-usb-surfboard and then the router install program detects internet, but still no network. So it's like my ethernet hole (built into the Gigabyte GA-K8NSC-939 nForce3 250gb Chipset Motherboard) doesn't do bugger all. The cat5 cable is new out of the packet. In my network connections window (control panel) I see only a firewire connection. Any ideas? |

if u can only see the firewire connection in "connections" then it's a problem with you NIC.
check device manager and see if there's a yellow asterix beside the network adapter |

Im not really sure what you are saying here, you think the eth port on the modem is boned? or the eth port on your motherboard?
1) For the motherboard make sure you have the drivers installed - or make sure the device isn't disabled in device manager... cause it sounds like either of the above as you should be getting a local area connection in the network places window. 2) What ISP are you with and what kind of broadband? As far as I can see you have failed to mention this in your post... I am tired though so :P With netgear you should be able to log in to the router by going to routerlogin.net in your browser. Obviously you need to have the router ON and plugged into your comp via the network cable. If this doesn't work I'd say you have problems with your onboard eth port. |

No asterisk, just has the firewire one in there too If you have no yellow ? or ! things in your device manager perhaps you have the onboard LAN disabled in BIOS. Other than that its f***ed... they usually still show up though and just refuse to function. |

ah k I'll give the BIOS thing a crack. Are there drivers for the ethernet port on my mobo?? Can I get generic ones from somewhere? Windows is not autodetecting a non-installed device or anything like that.
Internet is BPA cable, but there's nothing wrong with that, since I am now online via the modem's usb connection.. |

Check the manufacturers site for drivers www.gigabyte.com.tw
For drivers to actually do anything you need to have a device there for the drivers to actually drive anything :P In device manager in the + Network Adaptors section what have you got sitting in there? Also for BPA cable to work through the router you have to do the login setup INSIDE the router settings it doesn't just magically work like optus cable its a bit pain in the ass - so that involves logging into the router with www.routerlogin.net and putting in the hearbeat server and other relevant s*** you need etc. Once that is done you don't run the login client from your machine anymore, as the router is doing that for you. |

Make sure you enable right ports with the nvfirewall, for drivers for that mobo use the 5.11 WHQL ones dont use never it kills the ethernet, i have mobo K8NSULTRA939 (basicly K8NC wihtout the heatsink and fan on mosfets) also try bios update, can you ping the modem via 192.168.100.1? log into it via web-browser?
