that thing is hilarious.

I'd love to come over to the UK, but I'm in the same boat as boxhead... I don't have the irish passport though. I'm sure I'd be able to get one though, my mother was born in scotland and has dual citizenship.

Oh well, give me a few years.

It is, but you can live quite well on £50k in Londan, depending on your approach.

I don't think needing an Irish passport to work in the UK, I'm sure an Australian one will suffice.

I wasn't refering to getting an irish passport... I assume any form of UK passport would make things easier.

Ive got a handfull of friends over there at the moment.

A couple are just about to depart to spain or somewhere because they cant afford to stay in london.

Seems to be the general concensus.

I think it's easier because you can stay as long as you want - whereas on an Australian passport, you have to apply for a working visa which only lasts for 2 years?

we are www.photobox.co.uk. we print digital photos and post em out ext.

london isnt really expensive to live in when your on the pound.

rent for a good place is £100 a week. my food is about £50 a week. i cycle to work so i have no transport costs, or car costs.

so the rest of my pay goes to going out or travel.

thats right. being part of the commonwealth means s***! if your an aussie, kiwi or candian and speak english as your first language, than you can only get a 2year visa. (with restrictions)

if your some polish, lithuania, (romainian soon) then you can come here and work anywhere. its a joke. thats why its better to try get an EU passport like an Irish one.

London is not expensive to live in at all, it all depends on where you live and what you do. Obviously you can try and live in like zone1/2 and pay a fortune, but a bit further out and its cheap as chips. Food etc is all very cheap as well, besides 30-50K would offest that immensely, very good salaries.

Its always great to see people who have never been here have such obsurd assumptions of what its like.

Edit: My company is always hiring field engineers, you'd need 2-3 years of general IT Exp, some qualifications, exp with windows servers, exchange, networks, etc all the usual. So if your comming over and have any of that let me know.

I've got no set plans to travel as yet, although working over there is something I've been thinking of doing a lot lately. I've got a degree in multimedia(big whoop haha) so have done a fair bit of Flash programming and a little graphic design and have 18 months experience in a mostly asp.net/xhtml/css job. Would I be of any use? ... if I ever actually get around to going over there that is lol.

Also, for anyone interested in working abroad I just discovered that whilst commonwealth citizens (ie. australians) are allowed a working holiday visa for 2 years, we are only allowed to spend one year of that time working.

If you have you grandparents that were born there you can get a heritage visa that lasts for 5 years. That is what I am doing, it costs about 220 to apply. Just prove your link to your grandfolks and you are done. VEry handy to have and I must thank my grandfolks for been born there. I am headng over there next April to live.

viper thats the type of work I do and i've looked into this stuff i just have to get my ass into gear, quit my job and go there

i looked into this stuff last year and found out that commonwealth membership means jack s*** as people have already said ... so i got a Polish passport because of my dad being Polish so its much easier to get there with that? weird ...
