Hey,
Just wandering who here still smokes (and why) (cigarettes only) I don't see the point of smoking anymore seriously... P.S. The best time to quit smoking is before your dead |

I don't mind the odd smoke when I'm drinking - enhances the effect of the booze.
The bans in pubs/clubs that come in July 1 will be a good thing I think, especially for casual smokers like myself - a good excuse to go back to drinking minus the ciggies.. |

Actually I gave up smoking almost 14 years ago when ciggies cost $3.27 a packet (an I thought that was expensive then!!). I used to smoke around 20 - 30 cigs a day at that stage as well
So glad I gave up |

I quit about a month ago now cos one day out of no where ciggies made me feel sick, even the smell. So it worked well for me that now people can't smoke places where I'm drinking.

I smoke at work (3-4 cigs a day) because I enjoy having the break. I don't smoke at home or on weekends unless I'm going for a big boozeup.
Strangely enough - I hate the smell and the taste when I'm outside of the work environment & not getting pissed. |

I've never smoked (maybe extremely occasionally when I've been trashed, and even then it's only bumming a drag, but haven't done even that in like a year)
Anyway my boyfriend does. Its kinda sucky but hes done it since before I met him and I'm not going to be the one to make him stop. He'll do it when hes ready, I just want him to be healthier ;) Also, I dont mind people smoking, it's their body/decision/addiction etc, I just think its unfair to subject other unwilling participants to it, especially when you read some of the studies on passive smoking. If I wanted to be inhaling that crap, I would be. People just need to be a little more conscientious. Bring on July I say! |

My gf smoked casually before we got together and I made it quite clear when we started going out that I think there is no more of a disgusting habbit. Two weekends ago she got f***ing trashed and had a really bad night and she calle dme at about 3am crying cause she had a cigarette. I told her then it didn't matter and just to get home safely and blah blah blah. Two days later when she'd sobered up I told her I didn't care what the circumstances were but if she did it again I would dump her so quickly and not regret it.
To me, there is no bigger insult to my friends who have had/still have cancer and family members who have died from it, not to mention I am allergic to cigarettes (other than them giving me cancer). |

Agreed, bit harsh that because she had one cigga (or 10 or 15 or a 100) it's grounds for a dumping.

I guess it does sound pretty harsh but I would not have gone out wiht her in the first place if I knew she would smoke a cigarette now and then.
IMO it's not hard to NOT take part in a disgusting habbit. |

the worst thing is seeing parents smoking while driving their kids to school
"oh its ok the window is down" idiots. ever tried the throw a piece of paper out a car window at speed? the air is PUSHING it back into the car. :( poor kids, they will probably grow up to be like mum and dad smoking anyway i guess major respect to those who have Quit on this forum. my sister and bro-in law used to smoke like 50 cigs a day each. They would wake up and smoke before breakfast in bed. They quit when they decided to start a family and have never looked back. So much healthier. People who smoke shouldnt be allowed into hospital for anything cancer/blood/lung related. /flamesuit |

Maybe it's just me, but I've smoked a fair bit here and there but I've never felt a craving to smoke. I can go months without smoking and feel nothing..then smoke a few packs in a week and go back to nothing.

People who smoke shouldnt be allowed into hospital for anything cancer/blood/lung related. /flamesuit And fat people shouldn't be allowed into hospital for anything fat-related (a lot). Fat people are no better than smokers. Do you realise how much money is generated from the taxation of cigs? Its a dirty habit but it injects a f***load of money into our health system - more so than it drains it. While I do agree that smoking around kids is wrong as well as smoking around non-smokers, I have no problem with smokers who do it away from everyone else. I'm looking forward to these new smoking laws though, no more smelling like an ash tray coming back from the pub. |

Fat people are no better than smokers. Hmm, and how many people have died from second hand fat? there is no conclusive evidence that anyone has ever died of passive smoking. Actually just yesterday the Surgeon General in the states released his study proving that people have contracted cancer...thus dying, from second hand smoke. http://www.nytimes.com/2006/06/27/health/27cnd-smoke.html?ex=1151640000&en=e5193d6449d99e46&ei=5087%0A Sorry demon, I don't know where you got your facts from but I think the Surgeon General is just a tad more qualified than you. But Dr. Carmona today said that "overwhelming" evidence showed that secondhand smoke is responsible for "tens of thousands" of premature deaths from heart disease and cancer among nonsmokers each year. hundreds of studies have indicated that the harm caused by secondhand smoke is far greater than earlier believed, he said. The report's findings include the following: last edited by Tanaka Khan at 16:41:00 28/Jun/06 |

No "last one"? 'Cause the last ones are better than sex, trust me, I've had about a thousand of them. - Dr Cox
I once had a girlfriend try and tell me I couldn't smoke. I still remember the look of anger on her face when I had a cigarette in front of her. I never told her she couldn't smoke half the cocks in Brisbane while dating me, yet she didn't like me smoking cigarettes because apparently I stunk etc.. I mean, I didn't complain about her breath stinking like cocks? This s*** aside, I'm currently a non-smoker, but it might change, who knows. I sure as f*** enjoy a cigarette now and then, even when I'm "quit". |

i have no facts on the subject just as the surgeon general has no "conclusive" evidence of fatality from passive smoking. what he has is "overwhelming" evidence of increased "risk" of harm from passive smoking.
to save us all from my pedantic sophistries on the subject ;D i will just say that it is impossible to get conclusive evidence that a fatality was cause directly from passive smoking because even if a non-smoker that was subject to passive smoke dies of lung cancer & the cancer appears to be caused by smoke related carcinogens, that is still not conclusive. other factors that haven't been tested may have factored in. no one individual is a perfect test case that does everything right in thier life but was subject to passive smoke. i am a non-smoker, always have been. but things like :- * There is no safe level of secondhand smoke, and even brief exposure can cause harm make it sound like if you inhale a molecule of ciggy smoke you'll get cancer & die which is patently false. they need to keep it in perspective of the real risk factor & not try & demonise it just to make people quit. but having said all that... i admit that i was trolling :D it's just too easy with people that like to think in absolutes. |

Because of the lack of absolutes either side can make an argument. A small dose could cause harm (e.g. cancer) but it's just as valid to say large doses over a prolonged period may not cause harm. Different individuals have different predispositions and a lot is down to chance when it comes to genetic mutations and whether they cause cancer or not.

Hmm, and how many people have died from second hand fat? Fat people use up hospital resources that could be put too much better use. I would say that genuinely ill people have died because fatty-mc-fat-fat made bad dietary choices and needed a new heart. Fat people have shaped our food industry by making poor nutritional choices which in turn makes it harder for everyone else to eat well. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy junk food occasionally (and very rarely, a cig), but I can exercise self control unlike fatties and inconsiderate smokers! They are both as bad as each other. I do think these laws are a good (great) thing but don’t go thinking fatties are any better than smokers. they need to keep it in perspective of the real risk factor & not try & demonise it just to make people quit. But hey, it works for drugs, right? :P |

Yes tanaka ... just because its on the internet it must be true huh Actually Captain, I first heard about this on ABC radio, then on the news, then decided to look it up on the internet, so yea, it must be true. I would say that genuinely ill people have died because fatty-mc-fat-fat made bad dietary choices and needed a new heart. Having no real insite into the hospital industry (apart from what I've seen on Scrubs) but I'm sure that hospitals have ways in which decide transplate orders and would be able to decide who gets what based on genuine illnesses. |

whats funny is that he mentions that its a cause of SIDS
THE ENTIRE THING BEHIND SIDS (AND THE MEANING OF SUDDEN INFANT DEATH SYNDROME) IS THAT WE DONT KNOW WHAT CAUSES IT |

^ Well sudden infant death syndrome is used for naming any 'sudden infant death' that can not directly be attributed to a more accurate cause of death.
Maybe they are starting to find out more, or these portions of what were initially categorised as 'SIDS' can now be attributed to something more specific. Like second hand smoke... |

Aren't you 14?and you are...? also, i work at the regatta boatshed and fair enough in a restaurant to be a completely no smoking area, but not being able to smoke out the back in the driveway is bulls***, and now we're not even allowed to have a smoke as we're cashing up for the night, with noone in the joint, which is also bulls***. there's no way the smell would hang around, not in that place. |

These laws are ridiculous, I'm not a smoker, but don't see how the Government feels like this is in their jurisdiction. If pubs and clubs want to ban smoking, leave it up to the owners.. if they're losing business because of smokers they'll ban it quick smart... but they're not, becuase people like to smoke... ugh
If they really cared about your health they would ban cars. This is not about health, this is about politicians winning votes by playing into misguided loud mouthed lobbyists hands. last edited by Idol at 21:12:36 01/Jul/06 |

So I went down to the indro yesterday (1st of July) for a couple of beers, had a play at the pokies, was great there were no smokers.
After getting my second beer, there was a lady smoking at the pokies using a coaster as an ashtray. I was annoyed by this cause my fiance hates me coming home smelling like smoke. So I told the bar attendant "excuse me one of your patrons is smoking in the pokies area" He swiftly resolved the matter and came to thank me later on. I got home and my fiance was stoked that I didn't smell like smoke, so now I'll be able to go to the pub more :) no smoking ftw |

I am so looking at being able to go down to my kids soccer club and finally be able to sit inside, have a few beers, play a bit of snooker with the lad etc...and not have to suffer the overpowing cig smoke. It used to be so bad because it's a small building, you would walk in the front door and well it was overpowering...made me turn and go every time.

I have worked in a nightclub for a bit over 3 months now and I must say I prefer this non-smoking shiz.
Sucked in smokers. |

I agree (as a smoker) - smoking indoors is just the gay. It imposes on everyone else, they can't escape it and your clothes stink for ages after wards.
However, with these new laws banning people from smoking in an enclosed space, 4m from a building entrance, etc etc - the government has effectively moved everyone onto the foot paths where people walk up and down all day long and as per usual they didn't plan for this so there hasn't been an increase in the amount of bins available to butt out in. Their magical wand of imposing rules and regulations without understanding the impact has once again been waved. GG QLD Government... GG. |

I guess they are hoping that people re assess why they smoke in the first place.
Plsu, having to smoke outside doesn't mean you can litter and it doesn't mean you can blame the government when you do, f***tard! |

Plsu, having to smoke outside doesn't mean you can litter and it doesn't mean you can blame the government when you do, f***tard! Settle down on the insults there champ - you failed to see my point. Even if I do take the effort of going to the bin (and I do - you just assumed I didn't because you rather make an accusation without knowing the facts to postcount++) alot of people won't. The overall effect is more butts on the sidewalk, in gardens and in the gutters when one of the goals of the last 3 years of the anti-smoking campaign was to reduce the waste. They failed to plan for the fact that people are now congregating around areas that don't have amenities for smokers where as previous to July 1st, the designated smoking areas had rubbish bins and ash trays because (surpsingly enough) this is where people congregating to smoke. Remove head from ass and try again Kat. |

so there hasn't been an increase in the amount of bins available to butt out in. There are plenty of bins in the street, just because more people are smoking outside doesn't mean they need to increase the amount of bins. It's not the governments fault people are to lazy to make the effort to find a bin. Not to mention that even before the new smoking laws people never cared about where they butted out their smokes. |

Was on the coast all weekend.. In and out of heaps of clubs/pubs.. Generally to me it feels a great deal 'cleaner' inside but as soon as you walk out you basically go through a haze of smokers 4m from the doorway and then you hit 'fresh' air again...

I climbed Mt Timbrogargan (spling, meh) a few days ago. About 100 or so meters from the summit there was a rock outcrop to rest at. Really great view, then I looked down on the rocks I was standing on. A FKN ciggy butt. I dont belive that all the way up there was a ciggy butt. I mean WTF dirty kiddies.
After telling my GF about it she asked if I picked it up, I said No, relised my folly, now I have to walk and climb all the way back up there and get it, then and only then can I truly complain HAHAHA :D |

nice climb mt. tibrogargan eh toll?! :D if you think finding a ciggy butt up there is weird... you know the bit where you are about halfway up & there is a big rock overhang above you & all these really dusty caves with thick dust on the ground? just where the path coming up the mountain turns right towards the dusty caves, if you turn left & follow a smaller path for a while there is a series of small caves. one of these caves if explored is quite deep & if you have a torch n don't suffer claustraphobia ;) coz you have to crawl through some openings.. there is a cave full of fukn street signs!@#!@!
like.. who the fark goes the trouble of carting street signs half the way up a mountain?!?! :P last edited by demon at 10:03:25 04/Jul/06 |

It was cool to arrive back in Australia with this news. After being in Europe (mostly in France) where people can smoke everywhere, all the time, it sure will be refreshing to eat a meal without sucking down smoke. I actually did get used to it in the end so it will be a little weird to be back!
