We now have to shower with buckets in the shower, due to the new water restrictions. It felt quite weird.
Please contribute your thoughts.

i think thats great dude! well done.

everone should shower with buckets if they have a garden they want to water.

i also think its a bit messed that we flush perfectly good drinking water when we take a dump.

the earth is so mega f***ed, its up to the next gen to make it last for our great grandkids.

I congratulate all the whinging d*******s who decided to protest against the use/production of desalination plants. All states are currently having problems with the amount of water available, yet none are doing anything about it. Bravo.

Does he mean showering using only water poured into buckets or does he mean putting buckets all over the bottom of the shower to catch water for use in the garden?!? XD

I dont know what to think.

ignore the restrictoin forcing the goverment to pull ther heads in and build some decent water supply options instead of a $300m+ tunnel that no one asked for..

Good idea actually...

Screw Gardens though, Pave it all. Then you have more Water Run Off for Dams. And Pavement cant Burn.

It's a Win-Win-Win.

f*** it - lets just process sewage water and be done with it. Cheap and plentiful solution!
People in the UK do it with no problems. That water special on the news the other night showed that its perfectly drinkable and tested to ensure theres no dodgy s*** in it.

Salination plants are f***ing expensive 500m - 1bn!
And f*** the oceans with the extra salt! (Why they dont just sell the salt off i have no idea)

we will be drinking purified sewerage water sooner than you think in brisbane. the council is running a pipeline from luggage point to tarong power station as we speak.

and i have been advised that the line conveniently passes right next to the water processing point on wivenhoe dam. the intetion is that water which is treated to level five (drinking standard) will be pumped back into the damn for general circulation.

it would then be treated on the way back into our clean water supply. sounds fine to me.

Everyone should be given an amount of water per month that meets the needs of the average australian. If you choose to use more, you get taxed alot. The less water we have the lower the water ration and the higher the tax. Sure a system like that would be benificial for the rich who could afford more, and suck for the very poor, that is a problem that should be delt elsewhere. I belive it would reduce water whastage anyway.

I'm not sure, is the water that is used throughout the manufacturing sector drinking grade water?

If so, I find it kind of ironic that we are all asked to save water, yet we still buy lots of plastics, computers, cars and all those other things that take heaps of water to make. I'm fully for forcing all products to display their $ value along with the 'Water Consumed to make this product' value.

Yet the funny thing is you can use buckets to water your garden at any time you desire with no restrictions (as long as the bucket is filled by the tap and not the hose).

Sewerage treatment plants are very effective...it is not "poo water" when it comes out the other end. It flows in as this really wrong smelling brown sludge with hair and stuff all in it. After all the treatment (bacteria break everything down, then they basically stir it slowly and the water rises to the top, sludge to the bottom) it comes out as pure clear water. Its not actually "drinkable" at that stage. More like creek water, but if subjected to the same treatment as dam water after that, it is exactly the same quality as the rest of the dam water.

Even if we don't want to drink that water, we can use it for industry, like the Toorong power station which uses a MASSIVE amount of DRINKING water to cool down the thingies.

Councils are expanding current plants and building pipes...hopefully they can get it all done before the dams go dry in (projected) 2008

The biggest problem isn’t the lack of rain. It’s the low profile Politicians/Mayors/Minority Leaders/Randoms who want their 5mins in front of the camera. The lot of them bag out Beattie about how all his solution are wrong and that there is no problem at all. Oppose any sort of development and the media will listen to you. If we listen to these idiots, soon we’ll have no water.

So the government finds a nice “Green” way to produce more water without effecting the environment and now there are morons, crying about drinking other peoples waste.
By the time the water has been filtered, mixed with dam water and filtered again there is nothing left.
No diseases No sewage No poo

Yet the same people are buying organic fruit and veg down at the market, and yet it's grown in manure. Hell most of it is still covered in dirt when you buy it.
There are so many solutions to the water shortage. It’s just that the government is too s*** scared about angering a few voters. Grow some balls.

Also, we got our shower water directed to the gardens watering system (a hosepipe that ends at the cloths line).

Thats becuase Kuwait etc have a s***load of oil so they can power their desalination plants ... desalination is a pretty energy expensive process so I say build a nuclear power plant and desalination plants, problem solved D:

Yeah there should be a total ban on watering gardens/sprinklers/washing cars. People have no water and some old barstard waters his garden on the sly. :/. Water should be for drinking and showering only. Throw out the idea of washing your car with a bucket, just let the thing go dirty ffs.

surely there is a lot more water wastage in business & industry than residents watering thier gardens & washing thier cars. there was an article in the sunday mail a few weeks back about how all state & federal govt buildings run constant flush urinals 24/7... that's gotta add up to a lot of wasted water.
doesn't the leak in parliment house in canberra leak something like 25000litres a day!? i rekn that's why no government rep has suggested that they make it 'user pays' & up the water levy.... because it would soon be discovered that the major wasters are industry & government.

not quite all federal buildings. The Department of the Environment and Heritage in Canberra has some funky water saving features in the toilets.

But you are quite right, residential usage makes up only a small amount of the total water being used.

Also, Tiny, you surely can't expect people to just not wash their cars at all until this water shortage is over? Can't clean dirt and bird/bat poo off the car? The paint will go s***ty in no time. The two bucket method works just fine for cleaning a car so long as it isn't super filthy: linky.

At UQ, they also have water-saving features in effect.

All sewerage waste from the toilets heads to the main refec to produce the lovely food they serve.

How much water do people drink a day? 2 - 2.5 litres? 3 - 4 litres for athletes.

How much water is a bucket to water the garden, 20 litres? Not to mention multiple buckets = STFU people with gardens.

I hate it when situations are called a crisis... yet old pensioners are allowed to waste 30+ days of drinking water, everyday, even without hoses.

The thing I don't get is that even if ALL water consumption stopped, the dam levels still wouldn't go from 30% to 35%. So, we can restrict as much as we like, but unless the govt either finds a way to fill the current damns, or gets a new water source, restricting is really a temporary thing.
At some random dinner thing a few weeks ago, this engineer was chatting about the whole water problem, and he was saying how all that's really needed would a giant pipe from the water around Moreton Island to Wivenhoe Dam. At 2m wide, this water would fill the dam instantly, and at correct angles, the water would practically desalinate itself, with only a simple filtering system required at the end. It woud be simple, a pretty-much one-off cost, and would get it's water from the pacific ocean - a relatively bottomless source - after all, if it's global warming that causing us to not have any rain, it also raises the level of the oceans, which in turn, would ensure that this pipe always had water in it. When the dam was at the level we desire, we could just shut off, or slow down the water in the pipe.

Question: if it's that simple, and according to this guy, it was, why on earth are we not discussing ideas like this one. It just seems to be restrict water usage and get a water tank - WHICH (i believe, correct me if I'm wrong) ARE ONLY EFFECTIVE IF IT RAINS SO THAT WAY THEY CAN BE FILLED! Use the water rebate money to building this pipe and watch the garden hoses flow!

erm this may be a stupid question, but if you're showering with a bucket wouldn't soap and shampoo get in the water and kill your plants? Or does it not hurt the plants?
Persay
Posts: 4161

probably not, unless you're actually standing in one of the buckets... i think it's mainly to get the water that either hits the wall or you / misses you completely so is pretty much just wasted ordinarily. even if it did have soap/shampoo/cum in it it'd be so diluted i doubt it'd matter
