Topic: Server uptime utility

Hey people,

I need to find/monitor the server uptime over a monthly period (not just current uptime). I know that high-end monitoring software can do it (like Tivoli or MOM - MOM will used in the coming months) but needed something temporarily to query/log any server downtime.

Anyone know some handy little apps?

Unless you've had monitoring on that box for the month then good luck.

You could scour event logs, find when it was shutdown/rebooted/crashed/etc and then calculate the uptime from the amount of minutes it was down for compared to the amount of minutes in the month. psuptime & psshutdown can be used to determine reboot times from memory.

if you want to monitor past history then you will have to be an event log bunny like ticman has said

for an interim solution until you get MOM (which is balls btw), I would suggest OpManager. Does a tossload more than MOM, plus is also a lot better than most other free monitoring tools (ie does more than just ping). Also does stuff like monitor url's, ups, firewalls, routers, printers etc.

http://www.opmanager.com

Have used it in a number of enterprises to great effect. Free version allows you to monitor up to 20 devices, so that should get you through.

You can also try the 21 day trial of IP Monitor, http://www.ipmonitor.com/default.aspx or the 21 day trial of IP Sentry http://www.ipsentry.net/

But OpManager s***s on them all, including MOM, and if you have less than 20 devices its free!

HI CRUSHLES!@%!

Cacti would be pretty good as well although it wouldn't be accurate it would still give a good approximation (ie: as it polls ever 5 minutes you could have a server reboot within that 5 minutes but you wouldn't know it from the Cacti graphs).

we use a myriad of utils here at work. just under 100 servers australia wide to monitor plus numerous routers and satelite links. I use Cacti (linux) for my routers which shows traffic over time plus uptime/downtime. Solarwinds (windows) for servers and other network devices like printers.
