Topic: Motherboard blew up - new socket A?

Hey guys,

Just a quick question, I've got an Epox 8RDA+ motherboard and the capactiors have blown up on them. Anybody know of a place I can get a replacement motherboard? Preferably has Dual Channel RAM and NForce chipset but I'll settle for whatever at the moment, just needs to be Socket A and support a 2500+ Barton core AMD CPU.

Failing that, any suggestions for a new MB/CPU combo? this one has served me well but if I can find a new board its time for an upgrade.

Cheers

matey, i just went through this

despite the awesome efforts of some (Koopz, chicken, shrapsaq) and the not so awesome efforts of others (nigs, u sux)

i ended up just buying a mobo from the computer markets

got a nice a7v8x for 50 buxors that worked good (via chipset, so didnt reinstall windows, got away with it)

id say try the markets, not many socket a boards around, but u mite find one like i did;

I've heard rumours of people fixing dead 8RDA+s with the same problem by replacing the capacitors. I happen to have one which is dead sitting on my top shelf, but I have no idea why it's dead.

If you have to upgrade, you can do so ont he cheap (~$400) by getting an ASRock 939Dual and an Athlon64 - that way you can still use your AGP video card. Of course, it's based on an ALI chipset though, not nVidia.

Apparently it costs a bit to replace all the capacitors, but a mate of mine is a computer tech and he replaced all my capacitors (it was working originally but crashing all the time) and now its sweet as! Cost me like...20 bucks. Cost him a few hours replacing them and then an hour making the case awesome (cables neat etc).
So it is possible to replace them, but probably cost more than 50-80 bucks, which is what that type of mobo is worth.

Spook's idea ftw.. if you wanna pay retail, CA got some A7V8X boards in not too recently. They're not listed on the site but they are in stock

CA recently hired a bunch of people from the distribution end of the buisiness - if you want your mobo's caps replaced it can be done quickly and easily these days

I really like my current board and depending on the cost I may just get the caps replaced.

Any idea how much it costs?

1) find a donor board that died another way
2) learn to solder
3) replace caps
4) profit

I normally charge about $150 but I would be willing to do it cheaper for someone off here. Also depends on how many are busted. I have about a 90% success rate however it depends on a) how many are busted b) how long they have been like that.

^^ yep depends if the cap's fluid has leaked on the board and eaten the traces away on the mobo. $150 ouch i do ps2 install's for $20-30 that's Surface mount.

Recently replaced a TDA IC for a work mates car stero (MP3/WMA) panasonic unit cost my work mate $50 he gave me tin of merlow coffie for efforts (3 hour job surface mount soldering).

Rubba chickin's suggestion a good one, go out and buy a gas iron from dick smith $20-30 (fine tip), taking the caps out is a bitch for starters you need lots of heat to remove them that also is a issue to much heat and it will rip tracks from the mobo, alternate the tip every 5 seconds to each leg till its hot enuff to jiggle out(dont use excessive force), if you cant source replacement caps can allways use slightly higher uF ratting ones but need to be same voltage.

caps are easy compared to surface mount work. :)
