Topic: QGL FIGHT NIGHT - Charity Fundraiser

Hey guys, so some of you may know i've been trying to come up with an idea to raise some money for charity once again.
Raising Money For the Queensland Cancer Fund.
after a brain snap tonight i came up with the idea, of me fighting someone off QGL
This is a Boxing Match - amateur in a boxing ring, so it would be proper.
eP - evilpowers has said he will step up to the challenge if there is enough interest and if i can get a ring and everything else necessary to hold the event.

at the moment, this fundraiser is clearly in the beginning stages and probably still wouldn't be for a good 3 months, as we both(me probably more than eP) need to get in shape, etc.

i'm just trying to generate some interest to see if people would be willing to pay $20 to watch the fight.

it's not only a bit of fun of seeing to QGLers go at it, but we could make it into a QGL night, or if it's day time have a BBQ and get pissed afterwards and what not.

the per head price isn't definate yet and i may also be able to organise some donations to be made by boxing websites and whatnot to be won or raffled.
obviously the fight wouldn't last for an extremely long time which is why we'd have to go out afterwards to make people more keen to come.
those who do not condone boxing need not whinge in this thread.
it's for charity, the queensland cancer fund again and i'm hoping to raise at least $500 and hopefully in excess of $1000.

At the moment the weigh in is as follows-
eP(Evil Powers) - 65kgs 176cm's app.
maverik - 72kgs 178cms app.

i'd be dropping 4-5kgs for the fight also.
please let me know if you'd be interested in attending and also if you could contribute anything more to the planned fundraiser.

Rounds and Dates still to be decided.

It's On... and so long as there is much alcohol at the finish line.. it will be a good night =D

Myself and grunt are gonna be puttin a bit of work in over the next couple months to try and make this an entertaining fight, not just a bit of smacking and hugging.

SO nothing like a mundine fight. See what I did there? No capital for the word mundine =P

So lets keep the hits above the belt and the grog flowing, and she'll be a night worthy of the gods =D

Bring it biatch!

ACTUALLY, there are only two small areas of the brain (which are predominantely associated with smell and short term memory) which are able to regenerate their relevant brain cells. The rest of the brain is screwed if it's destroyed in an accident.

PS I've GOT to see this punch out!

I think Mav is just EMO... he wants to bleed hardcore but couldn't find any other way to make it happen without it being obvious that he did it himself =P

So he gets me to come take a few jabs, couple right hooks and call it a day...

Then we can all get smashed and live happily ever after =D

True. The human brain does show plasticity (and the younger u are the better the chance of recovery), however it also depends on what areas of the brain are damaged as to how likely u are to gain function back using a different area of the brain.

ACTUALLY, more areas that can regenerate are being found and I think it's probable that we'll find most of the brain can regenerate slowly from small amounts of damage as we look into it closer. (The second part is speculation on my part based on the trends of recent discoveries).

what is the charity & how much of the proceeds goto it?

ACTUALLY, all areas of the brain can regenerate damaged astrocytes if the connecting neurons & subsequent oligodendrocytes axons can still process glycerol protiens to repair the connections. microglia throughout the brain regenerate constantly regenerate!

& dont get me started on gene 47 of the X chromosome and following the amino acid sequence G-G-Ly-R! ffs

:D

This is true, HOWEVER, there are only CURRENTLY (as indicated by my use of the word "are") only two parts of the brain that are KNOWN to regenerate new brain cells relevant to their PARTICULAR parts of the brain.

Let's see what Dr Perry Bartlett and his awesome ;) team at QBI can do!! :)

no i just larfed coz if you had a clue about the subject you were telling other people they had no clue about, you would have realised that my post was just a bunch of meaningless garbage (although with a comical reference to the oracles of thook for those in the know!). there was no need at all for me to use google as i was just reading a totally unrelated article about the newfound properties of astrocytes on eurekalert.org. it's always amusing when an ignorant whinger pipes up about other people's google-intellectualism from a standpoint of total ignorance. :D

Hey Mav - i think it's a good idea but where are you going to host it? you need a qualified ref don't you? will this be another expense? Won't you need to get a licence/ insurance etc to cover you if someone gets hurt - when i say hurt i don't mean hurt within the rules of boxing but what if a spectator gets injured or a fighter is injured through negligence.

Maybe you would be best off contacting someone who already hosts amature fight nights and see if you can run something through them. It may also help to relieve the cost of hiring a venue/ ring. $20 entry and a few QGL spectators will not cover those costs.

These were just a few things that sprung to mind. I am glad to see people taking an interest and taking the time to do things for charity :)

that my post was just a bunch of meaningless garbage
Yeah, that pretty much sums it up.

Please go to a hospital and be awe struck that Doctors, Consultants and even Surgeons who aren't brain specialists probably can't give you detailed, extensive accurate and current information on the subject on the spot off the top of their head.

Arrogant what? I think "No You Are" fits here nicely.

Now stfu the lot of you, the thread isn't about brain research and your google antics about trying to argue it - create a new thread for it.

as i said it's something that needs to be looked into further at the moment i'm just gaining some interest.

i know referees, and alot of people associated with Australian boxing, hopefully with this in mind i'll be able to get the venue hire free of charge as it's for a charity, this is just the first idea i've had and may not necessarily work, but i'm working on it at the moment.
We are hoping that whoever we do go with donates us the venue or whatever we need in good faith, but regardless i have plenty of options at my disposal.

THREAD OVER.. SOMEONE IS ARROGANT (oh hey nf)

back to the issue at hand...

You'll need medicos on site and stuff like that, maybe st john ambulance or something similar they like charity stuffs???

You'll need a cool catchphrase aswell.. 'BEAT CANCER' or 'Give Cancer the BEATING it deserves' i dunno, marketing was never a stongpoint, you'll also have to drop Qgl from the title since there could be bad ramifications etc...

They also cost alot of money.
I think your best bet would be to hold the event at an actual training/competition ring or whatever, whereby the owners will have insurance and first aiders etc.

I doubt you'll be able to just pay someone to be your first aider unless you were running a legitimate business/officially recognised sporting or club event.

And yeah, as I said, St. Johns and those are volunteer first aiders aren't free - organisers of events generally pay them quite well for their services, the money of which goes into equipment, training of the staff and so on as opposed to wages.

Edit - Actually hows this for an idea, there are people on QGL who don't care for others for what ever reason, so how about letting those people compete against each other? Of course it would follow the legit rules for boxing with a ref and all, but it might attract a few more people to the event. And I will only be fighting ONE person, so you'll all have to draw straws.

I wouldn't touch being the volunteer medic for this "event" with a yard stick.

While technically under law you could operate under the scopes of practice of first aid (i.e. only be able to do the exact same duties joe bloggs with a senior first aid certif. could do), god knows what s***storm could occur if this isn't covered under good samaritan's act etc. cause it's an organised event.

Looks like a change of direction for qgl, away from lans and into boxing, aha.

Not to poo poo the idea.

For a charity boxing night to work.

You need
- fighters of reasonable quality or reasonable celebrity (a reason for people to come), can't see anyone but qgl nerds coming along to watch qgl nerds get beat up and given their inability to pay (for alot of them) or general disinterest in anything but themselves thats maybe 100 people.
- slutty scantily clad women to hold up cards between rounds (a reason for people to come)
- a good MC
- a venue & ring & av gear (microphones, speakers, projectors, video cameras vision and sound mixers, lighting etc)
- insurrance
- medical staff (not cheap unless you find qualified volunteers)
- judges (I am going to guess these aren't that cheap)
- approval of the appropriate authorities
- crowd control
- is it going to be licenced ? (more reasons for people to come vs. risks)
- can you provide sell food ? (ie. more profit to go to charity)

I'd also recommend setting up a not for profit organisation, or to get the persmission to run it under the auspice of one. Otherwise you become personally liable etc etc etc.

Might also be an idea to talk to the charity you want to donate to, since they may or may not like the idea of a boxing match.

If you don't cross the t's and dot the i's, off the top of my head some possible bad outcomes/risks could be.
Someone dying/serious injury, and you being sued for not having medical staff.
It not being setup properly or whatever and someone deciding that they were assulted, becuase the fight was more then what was described, unqualified judges didn't stop the fight appropriately, your waivers had holes in them.
Your costs exceeding your income and you being personally liable for those costs.
The event gets out of hand and "the mob" wrecks the venue and you are personally liable for the damage.

In short ...
Get legal advice (alot of the leg work has already probably been done by others, but you'll need waivers and a variety of bits of paper to protect yourself and the event).
Get event co-ordination advice (from a boxing co-ordinator and from a charity organiser).
Get finacial advice (no point doing it if you won't turn a profit ... how many people will I need to attend to turn a profit).

As fun as it sounds, the idea of untrained people getting into a ring is risky. You'll want them have passed medicals, to have signed away their lives, and they will need to check if they are covered by their medical insurance. Then you will want to have good qualified judges (particularly the one in the ring) and good medical staff (incase something does go wrong).

You may be better talking to an amatuer boxing organisation check out PCYCs and seeing if they will run the boxing side of it (they probably won't liek the idea of any untrained boxers), if you organise a venue etc etc etc ?

I'd rethink your wording of that sentence MATE! The use of the word slutty is completely uncalled for and a perfect example of why women are still treated like s*** in this day and age.

Your wouldn't call a man up there a slut so don't automatically label women in such a manner.

Well having been semi involved in a boxing production recently ... Atleast 1 of the girls involved was happy to bang bang bang for cash cash cash ...

ps. a guy in a pair of meat hangers is not going to attract the sort of crowds that want to watch boxing.

pps. anyone that is using their sexuality to do a job is slutty. That includes boba and him sleeping with term to get a job.

edit pps. one of the organisers referred to them as call girls ... and since he organised them I am going to assume that they probably were ?

no i just believe that women are still demeaned by men in society. They don;t mean to do it - it's just natural. The degrading treatment of women in sort of ingrained in the way society works and hence who people think. It just makes me mad to see stuff like that. Hell, even women degrade women in this society. I too am not free from criticism of such things when i have in the past gone along with calling certain women sluts or whores blah blah - it;s not unusual - but it's not right. It just shows the old male dominance thing coming through. People rarely talk about men in such a manner as they so freely do women.

These are just my opinions though.

Top idea guys. If you do the propper leg-work and get everything sorted and cushty there's no reason this can't be a good little fundraiser. They used to do a lot of these back in london in the 1950's - 60's. People like a good clean fight and the fact that proceeds go to charity is just peachy.

Would like to hear what you're going to do about judges though... Unless you're just not going to stop until one of you is out.

that means he wants women who are slutty, so saying he wants slutty scantily clad women is totally called for

sorry to go off topic...

Mav, not sure on your experience in organising (injury prone) events, however I have a mate from my old work who has done plenty, from concepts to full blown events, mainly through and for work, however also on the side. Basically after a 90km ride and a few wines this concept was brought to life... http://www.cycleepic.com.au/joomla/index.php
... he is a top bloke and i am sure he would help, at least with advice*, and especially since it is for a good cause. let me know...

Jim - I think we still have a 7 year outstanding bout to attend to, this time no alcohol pre fight!!! I'll will prolly need some afterwards though, to sooth the battered face/ego ... maybe we can entitle the match up, beauty and vs the beast!! ;)

Notes
* advice is from relevant** practical experience, not from google.
** relevant – we have an annual rugby league state of origin match, that has ambulance staff, doctors, insurance and crap, which is almost like boxing, considering the amount of bloodied and broken noses we had!
