Anyone else find themselves watching it wondering when you became your parents?

I remember being a kid and my parents used to watch boring old peoples programs like the budget and yet here I am engrossed!

Looks like we got a tax cut. Alright!

And more money for health research!

They may give more money to health research but when they actually see and get to make use of that money is an entirely different matter.

um single tax payers get a lot out of this given the 30% tax rate is increased to $75,000 and the 42% tax rate has been cut to 40% for salaries up $150,000, the the top tax rate has been cut from 47% - 45% for wages exceeding $150,000. what more do you want?

ps hi from parliament house xD

What he said. If you're a high income earner you're a winner this time. Good to see he's fixing up the super things as well as the Murray issues.

Good on you Pete, you've just bought yourself my vote =)

i loved one of the writeups, it listed the winners and the losers from the budget, with the losers including tax cheats, our enemies and party drug users.

oooo, those party drug users are evil I tells ya (they're mostly labor voters anyways so who gives a s***)

^ I would have thought they'd be more green or democrat than labour

I still think the country would be far better served with myself installed as a somewhat Benevolent Dictator

basically anyone from 25k-60k will save that 9.80. its only above that when the normal tax would hit at 45ish cents in the dollar, and now it will be 30 cents a dollar, will there be a bigger amount of money saved.

Yeah man, sweet returns for people under 60k. The price of living hasnt gone up at all, petrol is the same price, so were alll better off arent we.

Why the f*** they didnt cut some of the 50 odd cents a litre of petrol tax they take is beyond me. Not to mention we are now spending more of the budget on military then education.

Makes me proud to be working at the department of finance... mabye i'll go set something on fire.

The healthcare system prolly could do with a little bit of work but I still wish ppl would start taking a bit of responsibility for their own health. So many probs are avoidable/controllable by exercising well and eating/drinking reasonable amounts. Most ppl seem to forget this tho...

the problem with cutting the tax on fuel is that it then doesnt rise in line with the worlds rates, screwing up our economy again.

i dont know much about taxes and finances, but i do know if you start tampering with a rising rate on whatever commodity that is the same the world over, you will most likely screw something else in turn

What would probably happen if we got rid of taxes on petrol would be that it'd go straight into the oil companies/petrol stations pockets. We seem to be perfectly happy paying these prices, why lower them?

Regarding the tax cuts...I'm not sure they were a good idea. If the extra spending money is going to force up interest rates as some people are saying, then all we've really done is wasted a lot of money that could've been spent on infrastructure. Which will hurt later on if (when) the economy falters.

Then again, maybe the extra incentive to put money into super will curtail spending a bit. Or perhaps the Reserve Bank rose interest rates in anticipation of a tax cut. Who knows.

Our health system isn't that bad, I'd rather get sick here than alot of other places.

Libs have been forever trying to effectively push for a voluntary health insurance/funded/privatised american style system and Labor to keep the commonwealth funded system.

Very short simplified possibly-not-100%-accurate story:-

Whitlam introduced Medibank to confront the issue of the disatissfaction of voluntary health schemes. (Labor)
Fraser government tried to make major changes.
Hawke government rejected it.
And Medibank effectively remained and Medicare was then established.

Accidents do happen... and when I split my knee open (exposed knee cap/lacerated tendons)... I had to spend 8 - 9 hours sitting in a crappy room before I could get a 30 minute stitch job done. This is in RBH, luckily it wasn't anything life threatening.

By then, a lot of the flesh had died and yeah.

when govt's give out tax cuts it means there is something horrible that they want to hide from the public view or there is an election coming & they need to boost public opinion. just look how it works! people get another cuppla bucks a week & they go 'w00t! 9bucks!' & no longer care that thier services & rights are stripped away & the general cost of living rises way above the piddling gains they just made.

still... w00t! 9 farqn bucks! :/
