agree with spook... azereus is a fukn phat java hog. you end up downloading something like 100mb of java updates every couple of months... utorrent is a 100kb app & does the biz.

in the past when i have had troubles with port's and Azureus, I had to open for eg between ports 1880 and 1890 even if the port i want is for eg 1882. :)

Just enable upnp on your damn router and make sure it works, then any torrent program will work that uses upnp to map its own ports. No forwarding necessary.

I'd often set up some downloads overnight and wake up to find Azuerus had disappear completely and didn't finish the download, it'd use up a s*** load of resources and get poor speeds. It's been about 4 months since I've been clean of Azuerus and now I'm using Bitcomet and never been happier.

I, too am curious as to why you use uPnP while you've forwarded the necessary port.

just converted to uTorrent. OMG so much better. I'm actually dling at 50k/s within 5 secs of starting. Azureus takes ago to get going.

I am also on the utorrent bandwagon, was using G3. Better speeds and nicer app. I dunno if it was my settings, and I dont really care.

I've never had a problem with azureus and I use it for getting linux isos. Works fine with my uPnP router too.

Ok on the strength of the generl consensus I d/l and installed utorrent.I used to use Azureus and found it to be ok, but since you are all sold on this utorrent thing, I thought I'd give it a go.
Seems to work ok but the torrents I have got so far are painfully slow. I haven't seen anything above about 20kps so far.

Can anyone suggest settings for optimal speed? I am on Optus cable. Current settings are:

Global max number of connections: 90
Max no. of connected peers per torrent: 50
Max number of upload slots: 2

Max no. of active torrents: 3
Max no. of active d/l: 2

I am getting that "unable to map UPnP port" error, but the little light down the bottom is green (as it should be apparently).

Are there other settings that will help?

I looked in the FAQ but all it really said was to try different settings.

i had az installed on a machine with a new xp os install & for ages it kept getting these 'you must update java' popups with a lil icon in the taskbar that wouldn't go away until i dled the java updates & installed them. you don't get these?

yeah I get them, but java update popups are totally unrelated to azureus. well in my case they are anyway, since azureus isn't the reason I installed a JVM

you can use the java control panel applet to stop those warnings/popups too I think

I had a problem with azureas and even with port forwarding it would still crap out. Eventually I disabled NAT on the dsl and made it work in bridged mode. All good now.

EDIT: before the problem azureus would work fine when the computer was connected directly into the dsl, but have problems with the ports when connted to a router that was connected to the dsl.

<- has max 1000 connection + max 300 connection per torrent. Works itself out pretty well.

Also global upload rate is 8kb while downloading, unlimited while only uploading. I'm on 512/128 so 9kb+ effectively floods my connection so my download rate decreases below max (50kb).

Please, for god's sake learn how to manage your modem/router. Open the ports you use and then disable upnp in your modem/router and disable it in your bittorrent program while you're at it. It's not needed once you learn how to port forward and it is an excess security risk you don't need.

yer, i have the scheduler turned on all the time, so i just cue up my dls and then let utorrent grab em over nite during freebee time;

I don't know what people have against UPnP, it's the best way to get any decent nat transversal happening. People mistakenly think UPnP is insecure, actually it's the s*** windows implementation that was insecure back in 2002'ish iirc.

Best way for me to get ports forwarded is...to use port forwarding. Open em up on the modem and the router, then tell uT to use them. Simple and no added features used on the modem or router that I don't need. I didn't deem it 'insecure' but as everyone knows every 'feature' you have that you don't need is a potential security risk, especially on your internet hardware. If I trust no one to try and exploit it, I might as well advertise my SSID, allow people to ping my router, then turn off my SPI firewall just for the fun of it all.

Pretty sure Windows never really focused on security issues in the last 4 years either, just the odd patch here and there.

just tried getting lost with utorrent. max download speed i was getting was 5k with port forwarding etc. think ill stick to azureus.

how many seeds and leechers were there? i use default settings with utorrent and always get great speeds as long as the torrent is well seeded.

all BT clients should deliver roughly the same speeds on the same torrent. If they aren't, you've got it set up incorrectly, and suck at computers.

My max connect speed is about 4500kbps (iiNet ADSL2+ but 4km from exchange), and that gives me consistent uTorrenting at 440Kb/s. Azureus gives exactly the same result, but uses more CPU, way more RAM, and more Java.

just use defaults. its what everyone else is using for their kickass speeds. there are no magical settings for torrent clients.

What do you mean by public trackers

ones which you do not need to register to and which do not require you to maintain a healthy sharing ratio. these sites attract a large proportion of leechers who do not weant to share back.

I can get that on bigpond as well, if you set it up correctly it will fly with good a heap of seeders. If you give it too much upload you will not get any download, limit your upload to 3k max overall and it will fly. f*** the share ratio, people like us on bigpond can't afford to let it upload all the time. I'm looking at switching to Internode anyway.

Can you give me an example of somewhere to get registered torrents ? I'm happy to share, I'm on a telstra 20, so I probably won't come too close to maxing out

I found with Az it would hold a lot of maxxed out seeds/peers that were giving me 0 downstream, maybe its just a coincidence but utorrent seems to manage setting up and maintaining connections better and the downstream rate will get going a lot faster compared to Az IMO.
