I was under the impression someone on here worked at an electronics repair store... I need some advice. My LG 68" TV has just decided its not going to turn on anymore. Instead, we hear a strange sound that makes me think its the power supply, it sounds like a high pitched zapping sound, that seems to gain volume as it continues to try and switch on.

We think it was purchased in late 2003.

It just wouldn't turn on, after working fine since we bought it. This is the first sign of any problem (and it seems big)

I really just want to know if people think its worthwhile getting it fixed or if they are generally too expensive to fix.

Thanks

no tv is worth fixing imo, but "David M" at Computer Alliance is a tv/monitor repairer as well as electronics tech.

this dude is pretty switched on - he'd prolly give you some insight over the phone if a closer look isn't required. I'm guessing this thing is out of warranty :/

it sounds like the EHT/flyback transformer is leaking/arcing onto a ground line or chassis..

i haven't been in a private workshop repairing t.v.'s for nearly 2 years now, so i can't give you an exact price, back then it would cost you about $120 - $160 for the part plus $100 - $180 for labour depending if anything else was wrong with it, at bakers t.v. we use to charge a $60 estimate fee up front which was taken off your total charge if you went ahead with the repair, i.e. you pay $60, after the tv is taken apart and the fault found, the estimate is $200, you pay a $140 more to get it repaired.

i now work for the state government repairing electronic crap and don't need to worry about the money part.. and i LUB it..
