When do you flash your headlights at other cars?

For me it is when there is a speed camera coming up for them or it is dusk/night and they don't have their lights on.

The reason I ask is that I have a light coloured car so I leave my lights on all the time, day or night, and I have found an increasing number of people flashing me. Is this normal practice?

They are probably flashing you to say that your lights are on?

2. If there's some sort of hazard behind me, where they are heading.

I don't give warnings about speed cameras, as it's their own bloody fault if they

Why warn people about speed camera's? I'm sure you wouldn't be doing that in the future if a speeding car ran over your child.

I usually go 5-10km/hr over the speed limit when I'm familiar with the road and it's not in the city - like going to Warwick. I appreciate when people flash their lights when there's a speed camera, and I do the same.

Hashy, my car is silver and can blend in with the road a lot of the time. So rather than being a blind spot I keep my lights on so cars at least see my lights even if they don't see my car.

arent darker cars more difficult to see at night?

People apparently have a hard time seeing light coloured cars.
Lights on means that anyone going to crash would stear away from the light.

Lights on in the Day: No.
Speed Camera's: Sometimes.
Lights off at night: Usually.
Hazard/Danger: Always.

BTW, I don't think having you lights on will reduce the chance of you having a crash, at fault or not.

I flash my lights whenever I see someone speeding in the opposite direction. The pay off isthey slow down cause they think there is a speed camera. The 2nd pay off is, they get busted next time someone else flashes at them and they think they are being had again :p

maybe they are flashing you cos you have high beam on not just headlights, always n00bs who have high beam on by accident and it is still annoying during the day

Only flash people when there is a speed camera coming up. Have had plenty of people flash me when I didnt have my lights on when my alternator died at night on the way home and I had to drive with the lights off.

I only flash when the d*******s are driving with their high beams on and don't bother turning them off.

I'll flick my lights for the following:
radar traps/speed cameras (if these are really meant as a deterrent and not revenue, I achieve the same effect at no expense to anyone)
People driving without lights on at night
People driving with high beam
People driving in right hand lane holding up traffic when there are no cars in front of them

I put hazzard lights on whilst moving when:
People are driving along with an indicator on and not turning/changing lanes (hopefully this inspires them to think and check their own panel)
After someone does something really stupid in front of me and I then get in front of them (possibly slowing down at same time to below speed limit [only if not in right lane]).
I like to think it's a little more civilised than abusing them to no end/purpose

Just the same as it is illegal to drive around the suburb with your highbeams on, or within 200m of an oncomming car (I think it's 200, been a long time since learners test).

The point is to slow them down ALL the time because they never know where a speed camera/trap might be, not just when they get advanced warning.

I disagree with your point.

Your headlight flashing might prevent speeding in the short-term, as in the other car might lower their speed for a few minutes, then start speeding again once the speed camera has been passed.

If on the other hand they get fined and have points deducted for speeding, it's more likely to stop them speeding in future once they're in danger of losing their license with only a point or two left.

Sure there are hoons who will never learn, but I bet most people will drive more sensibly on or close to probation. So yes, I'd prefer the cops to catch and fine them as opposed to giving them a heads-up.

Aparently it's a good idea to flash your highbeams for a good 30 seconds when you get over taken for doing 30 up Mt Nebo.

hmm i don't get why people would flash lights at you for having your's on 24/7. I thought there were lots of cars that always had lights on by default cause thats the law in some countries?

edit: by lots of cars i mean models of cars. like foriegn built (european i think?) cars are made to have their lights on when you start em up. maybe im smoking crack though.

no one has mentioned RBT's. quite often we see them round here, and flashing people is fun because they tend to favour a spot inbetween two bridges so the people know there doomed but cant do anything about MWAHAHAHA. ahem.

A while back I was driving along Creek Rd from Carindale towards Mt Gravatt (that section of road is split leveled, 2 lanes each way) when I come across some blue piece of s*** driving the wrong way down the road. There had been an RBT just over one of the rises and he didn't want any part of it. Two marked patrol cars were following on the correct side of the road, with several cops on foot running their guts out. I pulled over and had a quiet chuckle to myself as they caught him. =)

I'd have a chuckle if you got cleaned up by a truck.

i usually only flash my lights when a speed camera is sitting right before a speed change, like from 60 to 100, but that rarely happens these days from what ive seen.

i too have a silver car and dont have my lights on during the day. silver isnt hard to see in the day. a yellow car on a dusty road maybe. but i turn my lights on at the beggining of twilight bedcause thats when my car gets harder to see.

if my car was apparently so hard to see during the day that i needed my lights on, i would consider another car :/ on the other hand, i guess it is pretty harmless to be extra cautious

Nice knee-jerk reaction. You missed my point entirely.

A fine or notice of deduction of points, whether verbal by an officer or as a letter in the mail will have a higher chance of reducing their speeding in the long-term (read: LONG-TERM) than giving them them warning with your headlights.

I'm not even discussing short-term advantages, as I'd rather have someone not speeding for 6-12 months due to lack of points/license than going "OMG they might still be speeding for 2 weeks. Think of the children!". Look at the timescale and think about it for a while.

Personally I'd prefer the officer presence as just getting pulled over makes most people nervous, but speed-cameras achieve the same long-term effect, regardless of whether their existence is for revenue or not.

I flash when other people leave high beams on or forget to turn their lights on at night. I definetly keep the lights off during the day & fog lights off period unless it's, well.. foggy.

Interesting story though. I spend a bit of time at Maleny and during winter it gets quite dark & foggy so on come the fog lights at night so ineveitably I end up leaving them turned on when coming back to Brisbane. I was driving near Toombul one night when a guy in a Hilux flashed me once, twice and then proceeded to drive at me because presumably, he didn't like the foggies being on.. what is with cock suckers these days?

Plenty of people leave their lights on all the time and because I have a newer car the car turns them off when I take out the key so I don't have any problems with running the battery down. It saves me having to worry if my lights are on or not . Plus, I think I have used my high beams like twice since I got the car and I am not getting flashed because I have them on.... unless stupid fools think my normal lights are high beams :o
